A Warm Bowl in the Upcountry Chill

When the mist rolls over the green hills of Waimea, the steam rising from a bowl of broth at Pho Kim An becomes the ultimate local comfort. This is the spot for those who want a straightforward, satisfying meal after a breezy day in the Big Island's highlands. The interior is unpretentious and functional, focusing entirely on the craft of the kitchen rather than bells and whistles.

The Craft of the Broth

The kitchen stays true to traditional techniques, simmering bones for hours to achieve a clear, aromatic profile that hits just right with a squeeze of lime and a handful of Thai basil. Their signature Pho takes center stage, featuring tender slices of beef and a broth that balances star anise and cinnamon notes without overpowering the palate. It is a clean, restorative meal that cuts through the cooler mountain temperatures.

What to Expect

You will notice that service is efficient and direct, perfect for residents grabbing a quick lunch or hikers refueling after a trip through the nearby valleys. If you visit during the peak midday rush, be prepared for a lively atmosphere where the clinking of spoons against porcelain replaces formal silence. Parking in this part of Waimea can be a bit of a shuffle, so take your time maneuvering into the lot. Whether you are craving the classic beef noodle soup or one of their refreshing spring rolls, this establishment brings an authentic taste of Vietnam to the northern reaches of Hawaii island.

We were cruising down Waimea for Father's day and thought of trying a new place out. We look at reviews first, and was hesitant to try. We thought of only trying one dish to share, but got swayed as we browsed through the menu. Glad it wasn't AI, as photos can be deceiving sometimes. We saw that a duck soup was available on their menu, and got the lemongrass beef vermacelli noodles w/ veggies. Everything was incredible. Simple & Flavorful! The amount of duck in that soup was very generous. The flavor of the beef, together with the garlic flakes matched the brightness and acidity of the sugar vinegar mixed with veggies. Will come back for the duck soup for sure!

If you’re looking for exceptional pho, this is the place. We have two local restaurant spots in Waimea, so we’re pretty particular about food—and this is hands down the best pho we’ve had. Everything was delicious and thoughtfully prepared, and the packaging was perfect. You can tell it’s run by people who truly care about the quality of what they serve. Highly recommend if you’re craving great Vietnamese food.

If you are craving for Pho, I highly recommend you look elsewhere. Even though restaurants name “ pho Kim an “, but it looks like Chinese chef cook the Pho. The pho soup base is not great, the worse pho I ever had. the basil is awful. Look at my picture. Common, hawaii has the best fruits and veggies, can’t serve the pho with that rotten basil.

The Pho was good and the Banh mi bbq was great. The ice coffee was good as well. I was a bit disappointed by the service. The Hawaiian lady was friendly but the Vietnamese lady completely ignored me when I was attempting to ask her a question. I was dumbfounded because surely she saw that I was trying to ask her something. Turns out she didn't speak English and that's completely understandable. Just give a hand gesture that you don't understand and can't speak. Instead she was at the other table before I got a response. Overall the decor was pretty plain and the piano music was putting me to sleep. The Pho, although serviceable, was also a pretty small bowl than I'm used to. Still tasty.

Overall, the food was fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced for Hawaii. the only improvements would be less noodle and more shrimp in the shrimp spring rolls, and a little more pork in the mixed bowl. The pork egg roll that came with the bowl was fantastic and filled appropriately. Would definitely go back.

Food is tasty, traditional Vietnam style. They probably short of staff due to Covid so the service is slow, that’s part of the reason I deducted one star here.

In Waimea for work. Had an early day and decided to stop in. Ordered my food which came out promptly . What really stood out was the soft shell crab. Sooooo ono!!! My mouth was having a party with the flavors. Hahhaha. Very nice decor and good service. All in all everything was pretty tasty.

We are FANS and regulars of the ORIGINAL one in Kona.. going at least TWICE a week since it opened.. The one that just opened in Waimea is more spacious the food is just as excellent.. you know it's AUTHENTIC hand made BROTH from Scratch. My Favorite is the the #7 which basically has EVERYTHING in it that is BEEF, my wife loves the chicken pho.. real chicken soup. It's the best Pho on the island an the owners are very friendly and they go all out give you the best in every dish... I'll let the pictures do the talking ... I leave no stone unturned !!! .. I left some ... so as not to be embarassing ...
