Toes in the Sand, Mai Tais in Hand

At the edge of the Pacific in the heart of Kailua-Kona, Huggo’s On The Rocks trades formal dining for a genuine barefoot experience. This is the spot where the floor is literally crushed lava rock and sand, and the tide often splashes close enough to cool your ankles. It is the definition of a casual seaside haunt, perfect for those who want to watch the sunset without the fuss of white tablecloths.

Island Flavors and Sunset Rituals

The kitchen leans into what the Big Island does best: fresh, accessible seafood and tropical favorites. You will find their signature Teriyaki Steak Skewers and blackened ahi tacos anchoring the menu, pairing perfectly with the cooling breeze off the bay. The bar program is anchored by their famous Lava Flow—a drink that has become a rite of passage for visitors to the Kona Coast. The sound of the live ukulele music often competes with the rhythmic crashing of the waves, creating an authentic, albeit high-energy, acoustic backdrop.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Because the venue is entirely open-air and located right on the shoreline, the atmosphere shifts with the weather; keep in mind that the salt air can make the environment feel a bit sticky, and the seating is first-come, first-served. It creates a frantic, high-energy shuffle during the golden hour as crowds gather for the nightly torch lighting. If you are looking for a place that feels like a backyard luau rather than a stuffy restaurant, this Kailua-Kona landmark hits the mark. Just be prepared to leave with a bit of sand between your toes and perhaps a slightly wind-tousled look, which is exactly how locals prefer it.

Sunset, Sips, and Great Vibes at Huggo’s on the Rocks! If you’re looking for the ultimate Kona vibe, look no further. We had an incredible time at Huggo’s on the Rocks, and it easily became a highlight of our trip. The setting is unbeatable. Putting your toes in the sand while sipping a cold drink is the only way to experience Hawaii. It is a fun, high-energy spot that manages to feel relaxed at the same time. If you’re looking for a place to watch the sunset, this is the front-row seat you’ve been dreaming of. The menu did not disappoint! Both the food and drinks were fantastic—everything tasted fresh, tropical, and exactly what you want for a beachside meal. Their Happy Hour is a must-do; the value and the views make it one of the best deals in town. What really made our visit stand out was the service. Our server, Grace, was absolutely wonderful! She was: Friendly and welcoming from the moment we sat down. Accommodating to o our needs, making sure everything was just right. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, stop by for the sunset, stay for the drinks, and ask for Grace! We will definitely be back.

A wonderful spot located right at the beach! Tons of parking and not too crowded at 6pm on a Sunday. We sat out on the lower covered deck close to the water which is a perfect spot for sunset! Our server Kristi took great care of us and offered complimentary rosemary bread with butter and also yummy bean paste. I had a craft cocktail "E ku'u Aloha" ('My Love') which was so tasteful and not too sweet. I had the Ahi Tuna tower and my husband had the cappellini with shrimp. Both were great! Highly recommend and the prices were not too high

Beautiful view of the sunset on the ocean. Great professional service from experienced staff. Ambiance is perfect. Drinks were good. We loved the virgin lava flow. Unfortunately the food is pretty terrible. The garlic Parmesan bread was soggy, undercooked, and just awful. Brussel sprouts were undercooked and swimming in a buttery sauce. We got the special fish dinner of the day which was pretty good. Kona coffee cheesecake was really yummy but really didn’t taste like coffee at all. It’s a beautiful restaurant for special occasions but the food really sucks.

Excellent customer service! We had a slight change of plans and needed to adjust our reservation. The staff was very accommodating and did an excellent job finding a way to make things work for us. We were struck by how friendly everyone we encountered was. The cocktails were unique and flavorful. We enjoyed the beautiful views. All of our food was perfectly prepared.

We waited 30 minutes without reservations as they need to be done a day in advance. Excellent and friendly service from Katie and others including their resident cat. My shasimi and sizzling mushrooms were excellent as was the drink special. My son's steak was very tasty. Very nice atmosphere and views on the bay. We will add this place to our annual trips to Kona.

Wow, absolutely fantastic restaurant. I'll admit that I was hesitant on how nice it would be walking up to it. But once we arrived inside and to our table, the experience was spectacular. We ended up eating there twice on our stay in Kona. The dishes are top notch and felt 100% like fine dining. We were fortunate both times to get tables that gave a view of the ocean. Unbelievable views. I highly recommend the teriyaki beef. But also tried the lamb shank, it fell right off the bone. The second time , I tried the swordfish special, the flavors were spot on and extremely delicious. I will definitely be back when we return to Kona!
