Big Island Brewhaus
About
A Highland Escape in Waimea
Perched in the cool, elevated climate of Waimea, Big Island Brewhaus serves as the town’s primary gathering spot for those coming down from the pastures or heading across the island. The atmosphere is unpretentious and buzzing, characterized by the low hum of conversation and the clinking of pint glasses against a backdrop of local photography and industrial-wood accents.
Brewing at Elevation
Founded by Rachel Whitt, the Brewhaus has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of traditional brewing. It is one of the few places where you can find small-batch craft beer fermented with local ingredients like ginger and tropical fruits. The signature 'Golden Sabbath' Belgian-style ale is a staple for a reason—it’s crisp enough to cut through the humidity but complex enough to warrant a slow sip. The kitchen leans into hearty, pub-style comfort food, with their fish tacos and Reuben sandwiches standing out as go-to orders for a post-hike refueling.
Know Before You Go
The space carries an authentic, lived-in energy. It is an ideal spot for groups looking to relax after a long day in the Kohala mountains, though the open-air layout means it can get surprisingly loud when the local crowd gathers for live music nights. If you are driving up from the Kona coast, prepare for the temperature to drop significantly as you enter town; bring a light jacket. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a challenge during dinner hours, so arriving early is a local pro-tip to secure a spot before the nightly rush begins.

Highly suggest stopping here for a great experience! Liv was our server and gave great recommendations from the menu. She was personable and gave great service. Food was fantastic and the beer flights were perfect for trying a bunch. I had the edamame, poke, and fish tacos- fresh and delicious!

Yum! This is the stop I make driving across island through Waimea. Great people here with pleasant, welcoming outlooks on life! Also really I am not a burger person in general but this cheeseburger salad combo is fresh and best on island with local beef and greens! It a perfect size to eat all at once without needing a box to take what you couldn’t finish. Best on island, Id say.

Awesome brewery that is worth the drive. The beer is great and the food is awesome. Had a sample of their IPAs and a couple of other beers (Coconut Crème and the Red Ale) - all were good! Had the poke nachos for a snack and they were probably the best I have had!!

Fun place with a great vibe. Beer selection was large for such a small place and the beers were unique and all were very good. I got a flight of 6 very different beers and all had great tastes. Local beef for the burgers , which were really good. The selection was on the small side but the food was all very good (in- house pickles and the best fries I’ve had in quite a while). Definitely recommend if you are passing through and looking for a good bite.

Local. This is a great place to try island crafted beer (and wine), have some food and be a part of the local economy. Very kid and dog friendly They pride themselves in using local ingredients and supporting a healthy island. Had so much fun with waitstaff who like working here.

Great service, beers and food!!! Had their Pastrami sandwich. One of the best I've ever had. They smoke it themselves, shave it thin and pile it on. My daughter has a immune disorder, making her allergic to several foods. Between our service staff Jillian and the chef, they took a menu item and re-engineered, not just removing foods she couldn't eat. The staff really went above and beyond. I highly recommend Big Island Brewhaus.

Great beer. Their Belgian ales dark and golden and coconut cream ale were perfect for the warm day. With a huge variety of locally sourced fare fit for my gluten free and vegetarian little, this place was wonderful

The brewhaus is an awesome little shack of delicious food and great drinks. I ride my bike around town a lot and it always makes me happy to hear music and laughter coming from this spot, even late after other businesses have closed. Not too many places stay open late here but this one doesn't disappoint. The staff is kind and positive and they informed me that they have gluten free bread although the website and menu don't say so. I got a bacon burger on some gf bread and it was amazing. Definitely recommend dropping by one night.
