Toes in the Sand Dining on Anaeho'omalu Bay

There are very few places on the Big Island where you can pull your toes out of the sand and sit directly at a table for a craft cocktail. At Lava Lava Beach Club, the Pacific Ocean is less of a view and more of a neighbor. Located right on the shores of Anaeho'omalu Bay in Waikoloa, this open-air pavilion captures the quintessential spirit of island relaxation.

Island-Inspired Flavors

The menu leans heavily into local provenance. You’ll find the signature Ahi poke bowls—often sourced from nearby waters—and the fan-favorite 'Lava Lava Burger' that hits the spot after a day of snorkeling. The kitchen team emphasizes fresh, locally-grown ingredients, ensuring that the pineapple and seafood flavors pop with authenticity. It is a loud, bustling spot, especially during the sunset hours when the staff begins passing out complimentary leis and the live ukulele music kicks into high gear.

A Local Perspective

While the atmosphere is undeniably breezy and welcoming, be prepared for a bit of a wait during peak tropical sunsets, as the popularity of this stretch of beach draws crowds from across the Kohala Coast. Parking can be a puzzle during these busy windows, so arriving early for an afternoon beverage is the best way to secure your spot. Whether you are a family needing space for the kids to roam the sand or a couple looking for a casual sunset drink, the club delivers an unpretentious, authentic Hawaiian experience that feels less like a formal restaurant and more like a high-end beach party.

After reading reviews I decided to check this place out. This place is now one of my favorite restaurants! The way was not only outstanding and beautifully plated, but our server, Justin, was even more outstanding. This place is family friendly while also at the same time would be great for a special occasion. I highly recommend the Hook, Line and Sinker (a delicious Ono dish) and the NY strip steak. The views of the ocean esp at sunset are beautiful. Highly recommended!

The beachfront seating Loved the overall vibe at lava lava Beach Club, Kapa! The beachfront seating creates such a relaxing atmosphere, and the free valet parking was definitely a nice touch and super convenient. They have plenty of non-vegetarian options on the menu, but as vegetarians, we found only 2–3 choices available. Unfortunately, the vegetarian dishes weren’t very memorable in terms of taste either. It would be great if they could expand and improve their vegetarian menu a bit more. That said, the ambiance is beautiful, and it’s still a lovely place to visit for the beachside experience, especially if you want to enjoy a good mocktail or cocktail with the view. such a relaxing atmosphere, and the free valet parking was definitely a nice touch and super convenient.

This is a review of the restaurant only. I’ve never stayed in the cabins. Honestly, the food is okay. It’s also pricey and not good value for the money. The reason to eat here is the ambiance/scenery. The restaurant is just ofc the beach and the views are stunning. Come for the views, not the food. Also, and this comment is for the manager of the establishment: please stop having your waitstaff refer to diners as “friends”. I guess someone decided to make this change to make patrons feel more welcomed. Better to great customers with a friendly Aloha and a smile.

This place is truly beautiful, and it’s the kind of spot where you should watch the sunset with a glass of wine. It’s very romantic. However, there was a hair in our dish. They kindly replaced it for us, but overall, the service leaves a lot to be desired. The prices are a bit high for local cuisine. The food was good, but it didn’t have that “wow” factor. We had booked a table in advance so we could enjoy the sunset with my loved one. But then people from the upper level came down, stood right in front of us during the sunset, and started taking pictures. That was completely disrespectful. You can’t just sit in the shade under the canopy and then shamelessly stand in front of people who reserved a table on the sand with a view. I really think the staff should control this better, because otherwise it turns into total chaos.

We ordered the most popular pineapple fried rice with chicken and baby back ribs. They both taste like cooking from microwave instead. The server took a while to show up and didn’t bring silverware after he brought our dishes. Then the other one came to help when she noticed we were looking for assistance and our waiter was no where to be found. The restaurant has nice vibe and great location, but food quality is below average.

The restaurant sits at an amazing location! Just gorgeous for the sunset! Drinks are good. The a little let down was that our server seemed unhappy interested and was not friendly, a bit distracted. However the absolute let down for our party of 4 was that the food was bland, flavorless. Not exquisite at all. Food was just basic, nothing special. We would have mentioned it to the waitress but she didn’t even ask how it went. Hoping it was a one off and a bad day for the kitchen. So in summary, great location but the food and service did not live up to its beautiful sunsets and Aloha vibe. Not Ono this time! Hoping management calls me back

Ok, so hear me out. In the area of Waikoloa, this is *hands down* the best place to go. It gives the quintessential island vacations vibe. We went once, and from then on, we didnt even want to have dinner anywhere else. May I recommend the edamame beans as an appetizer and the teriyaki steak?! The teriyaki steak is like a stewed meat, but in a steak...these meals we could have on repeat...and we did, 2 more times while we were there (which was only for a week). Your tiki- torched sunset & evenings will feel elevated in every possible way, especially with the live music which plays every evening. My favorite server was Hazuki. She knew how to be personable, she provided recommendations and she did not make us feel rushed. She even took the time to tell us at the end there was a post card to fill out and the restaurant would mail it out! No other server discussed this, we just thought it was a free post card! The restaurant is lucky to have her. And David, the bartender...what a great bartender he was! He was social and friendly. It was like seeing an old friend everytime we went in. Anyways, this place is just the best around. Highly recommend and I hope to come back again!

We tried dinner this evening and we'll, it didn't go to well. I gambled on the burger and lost. I know why the burger, well I needed a short break from all the great fish. Went with medium temperature thinking I had a good chance and was left with well done and unfortunately took a few bites and was done. Wife had coconut shrimp which was good but we weren't blown away. Star of the dinner was nachos... The hostess did provide us with a good table and I'm sure during the day the views are great at this location. It just wasn't what we hoped for.

One of my favorite places on the Big Island. Food is delicious and you can't beat the location. Perfect for families. Adults can sit and enjoy their drinks and finish their meals while kids play in the sand. We had a sea turtle swim up near …

This is for restaurant ONLY ⭐ Overall Experience: 4/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Service: 5/5 — Erin was fantastic Drinks: 4/5 Food: 3/5 Great location with an even better atmosphere. Erin was our server and she was truly excellent—attentive, friendly, and made the experience enjoyable. 🍽️ Appetizers Ceviche — 4/5 Tasty and fresh, but it was served with only one round tortilla that felt more like a single tostada. Additional chips would’ve made it much more shareable. Calamari — 4/5 Nice portion, well seasoned, and served hot. Solid appetizer. 🍴 Main Dishes Fish & Chips — 1/5 Unfortunately, this dish missed the mark. The batter was very hard and overly oily, and since the fish was placed directly on top of the fries, the fries were also soaked in oil. We ended up removing the batter and eating just the fish, leaving the fries behind. Poke Burger — 4/5 Flavorful and nicely presented. Adding an aioli or similar sauce would elevate it even more. Would we return ? maybe for apps, drinks and amazing views.
