Big Island Portions at the Top of the Hill

When you find yourself in the cool, rolling ranch lands of Waimea, you quickly learn that Hawaiian Style Cafe is where the local appetite goes to be satisfied. This isn’t a place for small plates or delicate, deconstructed bites; it is a monument to the hearty, plantation-era breakfast culture of the Big Island. The air inside is thick with the scent of sizzling bacon and fresh-off-the-griddle pancakes that are famously larger than the plate itself.

The Heart of Kohala Comfort Food

Chef-driven in spirit but casual in practice, the menu leans heavily into local comfort favorites. The loco moco here is a centerpiece, featuring a thick, juicy patty smothered in rich gravy that demands you slow down and savor it. You will see families gathered around long tables, farmers coming in from the nearby cattle country, and hikers fueling up before heading toward the coast. The walls are adorned with local art, and the hum of conversation is constant—sometimes reaching a high-energy roar during the busy weekend morning rush.

A Few Things to Know

Be prepared for a wait if you arrive after 9:00 AM on a Saturday, as this spot is a weekend staple for those navigating the Hilo-to-Kona corridor. Parking in this part of town can get tight, and you might find yourself circling the block for a few minutes, but the reward is a stack of fluffy macadamia nut pancakes that remain the gold standard for anyone exploring North Kohala. Service is fast and functional, reflecting the straightforward, no-nonsense hospitality that Waimea locals have come to expect. It is the ideal stop for anyone who values a massive, honest meal over white-tablecloth pretense.

We keep coming back for the haupia pancakes. So good. Loco moco is on point from the savory side of things. We'll keep coming back. Worth the wait. Cash only.

This place is a good half hour drive from our hotel, but we always make the trip at least once every time we come to the big island. The staff is very friendly, and absolutely everything on the menu is done well, with the breakfast offerings being exceptional. Our go-to has been the mok-a-sauraus. For me its the king of breakfast plates. A large helping of white rice (or for a very small upcharge fantastic fried rice), a charbroiled hamburger patty which is better than youd expect it to be, a few slices of spam, a breaded and fried chicken cutlet, kalua pork, all covered in brown gravy topped with 2 eggs cooked however you like. Its amazing. Kudos to you if you can finish it. At $19 its a steal as it easily feeds 2 people. The pancakes are also monstrous and delicious. They have a fantastic fluffy chewiness to them. Getting them with the haupia topping is the way to go. A plate of 2 pancakes is a huge portion. Pictures really dont do justice to how large the portions are. I'd guess the pancakes are easily 12" across. Keep in mind they are cash only but there are signs as soon as you walk in and the server is likely to remind you before being seated which I think is nice so nobody is blindsided. We look forward to coming back here every time we're on the island.

Seriously, the pancakes here are incredible. Sooo fluffy and light! But the coconut cream syrup? INSANE. It's super creamy and full of coconut flavor. I couldn't stop eating them. The portion is huge though, so be prepared! We had a drive and a wait, but totally worth it. A MUST try if you're in the area!

What are signs on the island in the small town of Waimea. Portions are out of control. Luckily the waiters guide you on what to order. Your coconut pancakes were delicious. Macadamia nut pancakes were delicious. Portuguese sausage round that’s tasty. I can’t remember the names of the dishes! :)

Amazing food! We came one day during our trip and loved it so much we came back. Our resort was in Kona so the drive was over an hour. The drive is easily worth it. If you’re anywhere near here, it’s a must. Best breakfast food I’ve ever had. Waffles and French toast were out of this world

The best pancakes I’ve ever had! Tried the Haupia and banana Macnut and both were excellent. The Haupia pancakes are on the sweeter side but the coconut pudding on top is absolutely delightful. The servers were friendly and the food came out quickly! Even though we were only in the area for a short visit, our group has been three times. Highly recommend!
