On Top of Maun Kea Food
About
High-Altitude Fuel Above the Clouds
When you are navigating the winding roads leading up from the pastoral landscapes of Waimea toward the Maun Kea Visitor Information Station, finding sustenance requires a shift in expectations. On Top of Maun Kea Food operates as a vital pit stop for stargazers and researchers alike, providing much-needed warmth before the trek to the summit.
Flavors for the Ascent
The menu leans heavily into comfort food designed to counteract the thin, chilly air found at 9,000 feet. Expect hot, steaming bowls of chili and simple, hearty sandwiches that hit the spot after a long drive through the Saddle Road region. The aroma of brewing coffee here serves as a sensory marker, cutting through the crisp, biting mountain wind that swirls around the base of the telescopes.
The Mountain Experience
This is not a destination for white-tablecloth service; it is a functional, rugged spot for those prioritizing adventure over luxury. The seating is modest, often bustling with astronomers, tour guides, and travelers adjusting to the altitude. One minor reality check: the winds at this elevation are relentless, so holding onto your coffee cup is a necessity rather than a suggestion. It is an ideal space for those who want to grab a quick bite while acclimating, providing the necessary caloric boost before heading out to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets in the Pacific.
Positioned strategically for those exploring Hawaii’s Big Island interior, the outpost offers a unique perspective on dining where utility meets the awe-inspiring backdrop of volcanic peaks and astronomical history. If you are planning a journey into the upper reaches of the island, stopping here ensures you are prepared for the cold shift in temperature as you gain elevation.

This is our favorite place in town to grab Hawaiian and local food! We recently catered this for a party of 15 (lau lau, guava chicken, etc.), and everyone was impressed. We appreciated the generous portions, as well as Roscoe's positive attitude and prompt communication.

I almost never give bad reviews but this place earned it by grossly overcharging. I didn’t go back to complain because we were half way home before I calculated; the woman does not provide receipts plus they only accept cash so it would have been hard to prove. My bill should have been $75 (2 shrimp tempura; 1 char siu chicken; 2 orders of lumpia & 5 donuts - plus tax I am told is 4.5%) but she charged me $106.25. She also spoke extremely softly behind her mask inside food truck - so very difficult to hear her over their very loud generator. The food itself was ok but not exceptional - the plate lunches at L&L are larger and as good or better tasting - and also priced at ~ $7-8 less per plate. Also I ordered beef lumpia but she gave us vegetable; & my friend said they didn’t tempura the shrimp themselves - they are the same tempura shrimp you buy frozen at Foodland. I’m wouldn’t have written a bad review, however, if this woman had not charged me $106.25 for an ~ $80 order. Overcharging customers $25 & not providing receipts is unscrupulous - stealing.

I still salivate at the memory of the delicious guava bbq pork salad I had at the Top of Mauna Kea Food Truck. (Whenever I try to tell people about this food truck they get confused and think that it is literally at the top of Mauna Kea. Not so! It can be found around the town of Waimea.)
