A for Island Favorites

When driving through the rolling pastures of Waimea, the sight of a Minit Stop might look like your standard roadside convenience store, but the scent of crispy fried chicken pulling you toward the deli counter tells a different story. This is a local institution in the heart of the Big Island, serving up the kind of no-frills, high-impact comfort food that defines island life.

Signature Bites and Island Flavors

Forget fine dining; here, the kitchen specializes in the classics. Their signature fried chicken is legendary for a reason—the skin is shatteringly crisp, seasoned with a salty, savory spice blend that stands out even among the many competitive chicken spots across Hawaii. Locals know to pair a two-piece meal with a scoop of creamy macaroni salad or a freshly made musubi. It is the ideal refueling stop for those heading back from the Kohala Coast or preparing for the brisk, misty afternoons common in this high-altitude town.

The Local Pace

The atmosphere is strictly functional. You will hear the hum of the beverage coolers and the steady shuffle of surfers, ranchers, and commuters grabbing a quick bite. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble during the lunch rush, as parking can get tight in the small lot right off the highway. It is loud, busy, and unpretentious—exactly how a neighborhood staple should be. If you want to eat like a true resident of Waimea, skip the fancy resorts for an hour and grab a hot plate here to enjoy while watching the clouds roll over the nearby green hills.

On a Sunday afternoon, this little gem is truly an oasis in a town where everything else is closed. It's a small store, but it's packed with great stuff, and the prices seem reasonable. They have a nice selection of hot and ready foods: teriyaki bento boxes, gyoza (pot stickers), musubi, etc. They even have several flavors of my favorite organic Yerba Mate energy drink. The young lady on duty was super busy keeping this popular place running, but not too busy to take time to talk story with an auntie like me. I really appreciate that! I will definitely shop here again!

Don't stop here unless you have to. Rude cashier almost had me walking out hungry leaving lunch on the counter.

I don’t know his name it’s a male employee that has very poor. Customer service he greeted me at the counter by saying WHAT YOU LIKE! He was irritated that he had to stop what he was doing in the kitchen to give us service he slammed the rice In the Plate and then I ordered the chicken cutlet he cut it in only 3 huge pieces and when he was asked to cut it smaller he just cut in half and slammed it in the plate! I told him he has very poor customer service and if he doesn’t like his job then he should quit! He started saying well I have to work in the back and over here and I said that’s not our problem you should still treat your customers properly. He’s very cocky always has a blue tooth ear piece in which is probably against company policy other then him all the other workers are great but all it takes is one rotten apple to spoil it! I am a very good customer I come to this store at kawaihae location multiple times a day I am very well known by all the other employees and actually one employee is my neighbor an another my brother lives with so I am very upset by this employee treatment and this is not the first time but this time I let him know that his customer service and attitude needs to be better I wish I knew his name I will find out but honestly he will be the reason why the store losses money maybe some customer service training Aloha shirona 2/3/23

As a visitor from the mainland, I can appreciate the style and it looks lowkey. We’ve passed it for a few days but today we finally got gas here. The parking lot is terrible and tight, we almost got sideswiped three times in the span of a minute. Insane. I understand this isn’t Minit’s fault, but I mean still, come on folks. The gas pumps also kept glitching out.

I was treated poorly by rude staff members. The employees could use some training on proper customer service and respect ✊. I’m disappointed that I have been “trespassed” really? Because I was recycling. Think about that! No Aloha 🌈. God sees everything. ☝️❤️🤙🏼 …

This is a gas station convenience store and a place to buy snacks and plate lunches. What makes this place so great is that they have banned beef on their menu. They have replaced beef with Impossible Beef. Yay!

2 words: Kawaihae Chicken. You will never look at fried chicken the same again. Crunchy as chicarrone. 1/2 breaded & fried Potato wedges too. Get the SNACK ATTACK for the drive to Hawi or en route to beach. Hard to get after 5pm rush. This is the closest gas station aside from Waikoloa village (shell in Waikoloa Beach Resort doesn't count cause they up prices $1 over base) and the last stop on the way to Hawi town. It's also the closest grocery/convenience store for those staying near Kawaihae & Kohala Ranch. Unless, you count the "farmers market" lady as a grocery, then there are 2.
