A Sweet Tradition in the Heart of Waimea

Finding the perfect treat in the rolling green hills of upcountry Big Island often leads locals and travelers alike to the unmistakable scent of sugar and yeast wafting through the cool Waimea air. Manuela Malasada has become a staple for those craving a genuine taste of Portuguese-Hawaiian heritage. The process here is simple, deliberate, and entirely centered around the golden, pillowy perfection of the classic malasada.

The Art of the Fry

Unlike the dense, cakey donuts found in mainland chains, these are fried to order, ensuring that each piece arrives at the window piping hot. The exterior provides a satisfying, slightly crisp resistance before yielding to a cloud-like, airy center. You will often see a fine mist of granulated sugar sticking to the warm dough, which is best enjoyed immediately while the steam still rises from the center.

It is worth noting that this is an outdoor-focused experience. You will likely be standing on the pavement while you wait, and on a breezy Waimea afternoon, that sugar might just end up on your jacket—a small price to pay for the quality. The service is efficient, catering to the flow of island residents grabbing a quick morning fuel-up or families stopping by after exploring the nearby ranch lands.

Why It Works

If you prefer a balanced sweetness that avoids being cloyingly rich, this is your spot. Because the dough is proofed with care, it lacks that heavy, greasy aftertaste that plagues lesser fried confections. It is a no-frills, high-integrity snack that honors the cultural history of Portuguese immigrants in Hawaii. Whether you are grabbing a box for a group or just treating yourself to a single, sugar-dusted delight, the consistency found in this Waimea kitchen remains a highlight of the local food landscape.

Fantastic malasadas! Filled to the brim. We came just before closing one day and still got super fresh yummy malasadas!

Okay excuse me these are the best things I’ve ever tasted?! We drove over here thinking “we’re not super sugar fiends, we’ll just get 3” like a bunch of idiots. Luckily we couldn’t choose just 3 so we went with 6, but if we had only gotten 3, we would’ve hopped back in line after the first bite to get 3 more. We got crème brûlée, s’mores, raspberry, chocolate haupia, pineapple peach, and cookie butter. Every single one was amazing! I’d say s’mores was my least favorite and Reese’s PB cup might’ve been better. Ugh seriously phenomenal.

Literally the best donuts I've had in my life. I heard that they were a must-try when visiting Hawai'i, but I had no idea just how good they'd be! The lady in the truck was SO SO SWEET, had such a friendly laugh, and let us try the different sugar coatings when we were clearly not sure what we wanted. She gave us different recommendations and was patient as we were deliberating. We ended up getting 3 different malasadas: plain sugar with haupia filling (I think), powdered sugar with ube filling, and li hing with guava filling (I think those were the combinations, it's been a while). Either way, THEY WERE SO GOOD OMG. I'm craving another just thinking about it. Plenty of tables and space. Very vibrant area with a lot of energy.

Legit. This is a proper donut. A must stop if you’re visiting the Big Island. We didn’t get any with filling…that seemed like a step too far. These were delicious and perfectly doughy. Cinnamon rolled were the best.

Pleasant surprise finding this food truck! My sister had heard things about this place on a food television station so we gave it a try. The lady running it let us sample the sugar before we ordered (very sweet of her). We ended up ordering three malasadas all with different sugar coatings and fillings and they were all delicious! Wish we could've tried every flavor. Prepared relatively quickly and well worth every penny!

On the side of the road, this food wagon has some of the best Malasadas I have ever had. They were all very very tasty. I would give yourself at least 30 minutes to order and have them made for you. It can be busy but definitely worth it!

The Malasadas are spot on! Fluffy, warm, coated in sugar and the dough is the perfect sweetness. We opted for filled Malasadas and I love the tangy/sweet filling of the lilikoi/cheesecake and Guava/Cheesecake. Appreciate the mix and match options with fillings and coating. It’s a little food cart on the roadside, can’t miss it. Service is grab and go style. Meant to eat on the run. There isn’t really any place to hang out. They make them as you order so, depending on the amount of people lined up, you could be waiting 10-30 minutes For your order.

We were visiting from Maui for a few days, and these malasadas became our must-pit stop before and after our daily activities. The Nutella-filled ones are seriously addictive, and everyone in my family loved them. I wish we had you on Maui! 😍
