James Angelo's Underground Pizza
About
A Slice of Jersey in the Heart of Waimea
Finding authentic East Coast-style pizza on the Big Island can feel like a hunt, but James Angelo's Underground Pizza brings a genuine slice of the mainland to Waimea. Located right in the cool, rolling pasture lands of the interior, this spot favors function over fluff. The air here carries the faint, comforting scent of bubbling mozzarella and toasted garlic, a welcome departure from the salt-heavy coastal breeze just a short drive away.
The Pie Experience
The crust is the main event: hand-tossed, thin, and possessing that elusive 'foldable' quality that defines a proper New York-style slice. Whether you lean toward a classic pepperoni or prefer their more creative white pies, the dough maintains a crisp integrity that holds up under generous helpings of house-made tomato sauce. Expect a lively, casual environment where the sounds of kitchen banter mix with the satisfying crunch of crusts hitting paper plates.
Local Tips for Your Visit
Because the shop occupies a modest footprint within this North Hawaii town, parking can get a bit tight during the peak dinner rush. Don't be surprised if you find yourself circling the block for a minute or two; it is a small price to pay for a pie that tastes like it was pulled straight from a sidewalk oven in New Jersey. Grab your box to-go if you are heading up to the cooler slopes of the Kohala mountains or enjoy it on-site for the full, steamy experience.

Wonderful New York style fresh tossed pizza in a stone oven. They have Hamakua mushrooms and other great toppings. It’s byob and they have ice, wine glasses and beer steins. Decent salads. I think it’s one of the best bang for the buck restaurants on big island, and the only place I like to eat out if I’m paying for a big group. It feels like a cozy hole in the wall pizzeria in NYC which is a refreshing change of pace. Bring cash and tip well

You have to try this pizza. We stopped here going from Hilo to Kona. We were just hungry and looking for food spot. Now being a vegetarian we don’t always get good food, sometimes it’s just to sustain but I’m so glad we stopped here. Pizza was baked right in front of us, it smelled so good and tasted heavenly. Also ordered garlic knots- so fresh! We all ate more than our usual portions

This is a super difficult review to write because we LOVE pizza and have lived in Europe and New York, so we've had AMAZING pizza. With that said, we are soooo thankful to have good pizza options in Waimea. Comparing the different spots is super hard because everyone has their own, personal view of the right crust flavor, right crust thickness, right sauce, right toppings. With that said we've had pizza at Pau, Dom de Lucas, Big Island and Dominoes. The greatest part of Underground is the variety of toppings. James makes it really easy to build a great pizza. We also like a thin crust and Underground pizza has a nice, thin, crispy crust. We tend to like Pau's pizza a bit more, but - if we lived on the east side of Waimea vs West, we would for sure go to Underground most of the time.

One of the best tasting, gluten free pizzas I’ve had. The service was great. If you’re gluten free and staying on the Big Island, it’s worth the drive from wherever you are staying.

The owner was very hospitable and the gluten free pizza was great! It is a northeast coast style pizzeria like you would find in NJ/NY/MA. Try it, it’s worth the drive from anywhere on the Big Island.

Oh, wow! What a beautiful pizza. I was so very much looking forward to trying this piece and it exceeded my expectations. If I lived on this island, I don't know why I would get pizza pie anywhere else. And homemade tiramisu, forget about it!

Great little pizza spot! Floor is slippery with flour dust, there's a giant table labeled "The Godfather" and they have pebble ice. Dude making pizza is no nonsense, little conversation but solid delivery. Pizza was fantastic! Check them out!

The best pizza in Hawaii! Worth a trip to Waimea for homemade crust made daily. The owner is James, originally from Boston. You may get to see him tossing the dough up in the air! It’s a nice chewy and crunchy crust, it’s really perfection. Toppings and cheese are generous portions and of course the sauce is delicious.

Awesome little place coming from the North through Waimea. After a long day and drive through Volcano’s National Park, this place hit the spot. ***CASH ONLY*** The two large Boston-style pizzas were delicious and filling. They also have a sonic crushed ice maker for their drinks! Great value and pricing for the whole family and there’s a few tables to sit inside. Ample parking on the side. Will definitely return!

This place has sooooo much character!! They are rocking out 50’s dance tunes at a volume you’d want. It sets the tone for the vibe of what feels like an actual 50’s pizza place. The owner(?) feels like a guy from New York (East coast accent)…and has the original grit it would take to make an authentic New York Pizza that they are clearly pulling off. Local one-of-kind places like this make little Waimea town so special. I’m a local from the other side of the island…and I’ll be back every time I cruise through this area.
