I'a Ono Thai
About
A Taste of Thailand on the Big Island
Tucked away in the rolling green hills of Waimea, I'a Ono Thai serves as a surprising sanctuary for those craving bold, aromatic spices amidst the cool upcountry air. The kitchen specializes in traditional Thai preparations that balance heat, sweetness, and acidity with remarkable precision. Whether you are coming off a long drive through the interior or finishing a day at the nearby ranch lands, the immediate aroma of toasted chilis and fresh lemongrass hitting the wok provides an instant, warming welcome.
The Culinary Focus
Expect a menu anchored by deeply layered curries and stir-frys that prioritize fresh, high-quality ingredients. The Pad Thai is consistently cited by locals for its authentic tamarind tang and perfectly chewy rice noodles, while the green curry provides a sinus-clearing kick that pairs beautifully with their fragrant jasmine rice. Everything is prepared to order, which means you might wait a few extra minutes during the lunch rush, but the resulting freshness makes the time spent in their casual seating area well worth it.
What to Expect When You Arrive
The atmosphere is strictly unpretentious and focused on the food. It is the kind of place where locals grab a quick, high-quality meal before heading back to work or out to the paddocks. Be prepared for a space that keeps things simple; the clatter of pans and the hum of the ventilation fan serve as the soundtrack to your meal. Parking in this bustling Waimea corridor can be a bit of a dance, so plan your arrival accordingly. If you find yourself craving a vibrant, punchy meal that cuts through the mist and dampness of the Hawaii County highlands, this is your go-to spot for an honest, satisfying plate of food.

Very slow service!!! Took about a hr to get our food! The food was saturated in oil! My husband was not a fan of the poke. There are no bathrooms! They also ran out of rice. The only thing we really liked was the shrimp roll. The taco place next door was 50 times faster and had amazing black fish tacos! My shrimp plate only had 3 shrimp.

They are selling poke bowl, but it has 10% of fish, 20% of rice and 70% of lettuce. $20 for that? really?

I'm from San Diego and have had plenty of amazing Thai food but nothing even comes close to how amazing the food was here. Ordered the Yellow Curry and Drunken noodles both with shrimp and oh my god it was the best ever. Highly recommend this place.
