HaLani
About
Sun-Drenched Flavors on the Kohala Coast
Perched right at the edge of the Pacific, HaLani offers a rare vantage point where the turquoise waters of the Kohala Coast feel close enough to touch. The open-air design invites a constant sea breeze, carrying the faint, salty scent of the tide into the dining room. It is the kind of place where the transition from a sun-baked afternoon to a golden-hued dusk feels seamless.
The Kohala Culinary Signature
The menu leans heavily into the bounty of the Big Island. You will find that the kitchen prioritizes regional sourcing, resulting in dishes that highlight fresh, seasonal produce alongside locally caught fish. Whether you are stopping in for a hearty breakfast before heading out to the beaches of Waimea or looking for a relaxed dinner, the flavors remain bright and uncomplicated. Their approach to Hawaiian-inspired cuisine focuses on letting the quality of the ingredients speak for itself, rather than over-complicating the presentation.
A Relaxed Local Rhythm
The atmosphere here is distinctly unhurried. It serves as an ideal spot for visitors who want to avoid the frantic pace of larger resorts, or for locals looking for a consistent, high-quality meal with an unbeatable view. Note that the layout is entirely exposed to the elements, which means during peak trade wind hours, your napkins might need a paperweight. It is a minor quirk of coastal dining that only adds to the authentic, outdoor-centric charm of this Waimea staple. With plenty of space between tables, it remains one of the more comfortable spots for families or small groups seeking a quiet corner to watch the sunset without the distraction of loud, piped-in music.

I expected we'd pay resort prices for our meal, but the cost was exorbitant for the quality and serving size of the food. I was shocked and pretty bummed by that. They also didn't wish my husband a happy birthday even though our reservation said we were celebrating a special occasion and specifiied it was my husband's birthsay. The ambience is really beautiful though.

Amazing location and great views. Restaurant itself is very beautiful. The whole setting is amazing. We went there for breakfast, its in a resort property so parking was valet but it was validated at restaurant so it free. We got seats immediately, we were amazed by the setting and views. We ordered ube pancakes as we read great things about it. And reviews were right. Uber pancakes were delicious. We were very happy with the overall experience. Definitely recommending.

Ver good ambiance for date night! We celebrated our anniversary. My favorite was the pizza, food was decent and the atmosphere made up for it. Live music when we went. Lovely staff and beautiful hotel. Parking is valet only but they validate!

One of the best dining experiences we had during our 3-week trip through Hawaii! I had been looking for Mediterranean food through our stays in Oahu and Maui, but wasn’t able to find any til we landed here on Big Island. We went during sunset and it was sooooo beautiful. We ordered: • the 3 dips - loved their muhammara!! Plus the bread is so squishy and soft it absorbs the flavors of the dips so well • burrata salad - very refreshing and well seasoned. I believe it’s peach or melon served with it, a very nice touch • grilled octopus - loved the tomato(?) sauce it was served with, and the way they grilled was perfection. Reminded me of the octopus I’d have in Kerekennah, a small island off the coast of Tunisia. Fresh & well seasoned. • Cacio e pepe + chicken: really appreciated how they noticed my husband and I were sharing everything, so they had split the pasta into two bowls. Deliciously made, with it had a bit more sauce tho and that the chicken wasnt so dry. • inside out smores: YUMMY. loved the combo of the graham cracker ice cream with the roasted marshmallow and chocolate sauce + inside the marshmelllw too. In all we spent $190 for 2 people including tax and tip (no drinks). Sure a bit on the pricier side, but we had been spending $90-110 for very average or not even good meals across Hawaii anyways, so didn’t seem too bad. Parking is free! Valet only, but give your ticket when you get the check to get a 3-hour validation stamp.

I have been going to this restaurant with my family every winter for almost five years. Halani used to be my favorite restaurant, but within the last two years, they have changed the menu and the service has gotten worse. My fish in my poke bowl was discolored and mushy. The hostess was also quite unpleasant. Unfortunate that one of my favorite restaurants on the Big Island has gotten so much worse in quality. Two stars for the amazing view.

We had dinner here our first day. They have a kids buffet which was good for our grandkids. Big place with tables inside and outside and nice sunset views. The menu itself is limited but understandable given that it is catering to a wide cross section of folks. The deserts were excellent and Angie our server was very warm friendly and helpful.

Inside the Auberge. Food is good. Try the Ahi Steak. Service was slow, and why I am giving it 4 stars. Ambience is fantastic. Part inside, part outside. A great Hawaiian vibe.

Wow!! If you're looking for gorgeous atmosphere, beautiful views, great service, and delicious food... make you3 reservation now! My husband and I made a 6 PM dinner reservation to celebrate our anniversary on a Tuesday - restaurant about halfway full. Service from all staff and our waiter was very friendly and attentive. -Seared Halloumi with Pistachio Pesto & Arrabbiata -Calabrese Pizza made with their in-house Balloon Bread dough -Cacio e Pepe -Bottle of white wine (couldn't recall the name, but it was light, refreshing, and hit the spot) Food was SO delicious! We ended up ordering a second pizza because it was so good! Would highly recommend for a nice meal and for any special occasion or just because!

HāLani is a beautiful spot with an amazing atmosphere. I had the pleasure of visiting twice—first at the outdoor patio bar where I enjoyed some excellent tapas and drinks. The Baked Hawaii dessert was out of this world! I returned for dinner and had the Wagyu steak, which was absolutely delicious. The menu is delightful, and the presentation is spot on. They also have a fantastic selection of tequila. The service was kind and friendly, making the whole experience even better. Highly recommend checking this place out!
