A Slice of Tokyo in Upcountry Waimea

When you find yourself navigating the rolling green pastures of Waimea, the last thing you might expect is a masterclass in Japanese comfort food. Big Island Tokyo Table brings a precision to the table that feels miles away from the typical ranch-style dining of the Big Island. The space is intimate, often buzzing with the localized chatter of regulars who know exactly when to arrive to snag a seat before the lunch rush hits.

The Menu Philosophy

The kitchen leans into the philosophy of 'shokunin'—the Japanese artisan spirit—focusing on high-quality ingredients that honor traditional techniques. You will find staples like perfectly seasoned katsu and delicate gyoza, but the real draw is the consistency of their broth and the integrity of the rice. Everything is served with a deliberate simplicity, prioritizing flavor over unnecessary flair. The scent of toasted sesame and simmering dashi greets you the moment you step through the door, offering a savory warmth that contrasts beautifully with the crisp, cool air of the Kohala mountains.

What to Expect

While the food is stellar, keep in mind that the footprint is modest. It is a no-frills, counter-service style environment where the focus stays strictly on what is coming out of the kitchen. Parking in this part of Waimea can be a bit of a dance during peak weekend hours, so plan for a short walk if you visit during the afternoon peak. It is an ideal spot for those who value authenticity and are looking for a quick, soul-satisfying meal that breaks up a day of exploring the north side of the island. Whether you are a local living in the shadow of Mauna Kea or a traveler descending from the mountain passes, this is a reliable destination for a bowl of something warm and expertly prepared.

Tasty but a little expensive for the portion size and for a take out restaurant. Our favorite is the gyudon (beef bowl)!

Try their panna cotta! 😋 *ps Google Maps says they are closed, but I just visited and they are definitely open. I recommend calling to make sure.

I ordered chicken with rice. Chicken is not fresh, tastes like leftover. Besides, size is small, $24 for a bento box is not worth it. It’s the worst meal I had in Big Island.

My karaage bento was so gooood!! Delicious and very authentic. So much attention to little tasty details. A yummy mayo and tobiko condiment and lemon for the chicken, lots of veggie variety, even a shoyu egg. The rice had a sprinkle of shiso, a sheet of nori, some edamame and some takuan. Really excellent and the owner I met is very kind and cheerful.

Really excellent food — I had gyudon, which was about as good as I’ve had anywhere. The egg was perfectly cooked; and the beef was tasty, thin and proportioned well. The rice was excellent—every grain was perfectly cooked. The prices were high, but the quality stood up to the scrutiny that necessitates.

The gyudon is exactly like I have had in Japan. Perfect. Cost is not cheap but quality is excellent. Chicken Katsu curry was really good. I wish they would open a sit down restaurant so I could enjoy a wider menu.

Stopped here for lunch and ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen and quickly received our order. The staff was pleasant and polite. The ramen was pretty good, but I felt the portion was a little small. The noodles were well cooked and the broth was tasty.
