About
Scoops of Upcountry Joy
Stepping off the main road in Waimea, you are immediately greeted by the sweet, creamy scent of homemade waffle cones hitting the iron. Anuenue Ice Cream has become a local staple for those traversing the rolling green pastures of the Big Island's interior. This isn't your standard commercial freezer fare; the shop focuses on highlighting island-grown ingredients that reflect the rich agricultural heritage of the Kohala mountains.
Crafting the Big Island Flavor
The menu rotates based on what is currently ripening in the surrounding orchards. Expect bold, authentic flavors like tart lilikoi, rich Kona coffee, and macadamia nut that leans into the crunchy, buttery profile characteristic of local harvests. Every batch is churned with a density that suggests patience—the texture is smooth, slow-melting, and unmistakably fresh.
The Waimea Experience
The shop maintains an unpretentious, open-air feel that encourages lingering. It is the perfect pit stop after a rainy morning drive through the mist or before heading down toward the beaches of the Kohala Coast. Because the shop is modest in size, seating can fill up quickly during the mid-afternoon rush, often spilling onto the sidewalk where you can watch the cool breeze roll off the hills. While parking in this busy section of town requires a bit of patience during peak lunch hours, the reward of a cold, handcrafted treat is worth the navigation. Whether you are a local picking up a pint for the weekend or a visitor searching for a genuine taste of Hawaii, this spot delivers a grounded, honest dessert experience.

Have been coming to this place every vacation for over 20 years. Such great texture and variety of flavors. I vowed to try each once but don't think my brain could handle the freeze.

Pure Aloha in a Cone! If you are looking for the absolute best shave ice on the island, Anuenue Shave Ice is it. I’ve tried a lot of spots, but the ice here is next-level—it is so incredibly fine and fluffy that it literally melts in your mouth like fresh snow. No crunchy ice chunks here! What We Ordered: The Flavor Combo: We got a mix of passion fruit (lilikoi), mango, and coconut. The syrups taste like actual, real fruit, not that artificial, sugary cough-syrup stuff you get at cheaper places. The Upgrades (A Must!): Do yourself a favor and get it with a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream at the bottom and the snow cap (sweetened condensed milk) on top. It makes it so rich and creamy! The staff was incredibly friendly, patient while we decided on flavors, and the service was fast even though there was a bit of a line (which is always a good sign). It’s the perfect, refreshing treat to beat the heat.

Popular shave ice and ice cream shop with an outgoing and friendly staff. The shopkeeper offered everyone free ice cream tasting, and would match you to a taste if you had no preference. Yum! The shave ice itself was generous and tasty. Cash only!

This shave ice was excellent! We enjoyed how many flavors they had and the options that were provided. It was a large amount of ice for the price we paid and the flavors were good. The ladies running this were friendly and I thought it was nice they warned us about the shave ice falling over if we set it down. On our spoons, they also gave us a generous free sample of their ice cream! We enjoyed this cold treat after going to the beach during our last few days. If we had more time we would have come back and tried other flavors.

Has our FAVORITE ice cream on all the big island!! If you stop, you need to get the shaved ice with the LILIKOI CHEESECAKE ice cream - we make a trip up here every visit to the big island just because it's so good and we can't find it anywhere else! People who work here are always warm and attentive too. It's cash only though with no Venmo type options so definitely bring cash! Would highly recommend coming to lunch here - there's a tasty burger joint right next door so we always do burger + shaved ice cream/ ice cream!!!

Located in Kawaihae, Anuenue Ice Cream & Shave Ice have been serving up great, flavorful frozen treats for many years. Their ice cream is of high quality with many flavors offered. It is a bit pricey. Their shaved ice comes in a plastic cone. It is a generous combination of ice and syrups, which come in many tasty flavors. The staff were very friendly. Definitely hits the spot on a hot day. Cool out at Anuenue IceCream and Shaved Ice shop. You won’t be disappointed.

We used to visit this shave ice stand on the Big Island often when we visited with the kids. It's been some time but my husband and I (kids are grown, we were solo 😊) had to go back based on our fond memories. The service - absolutely terrific! Greeted us with enthusiasm with the aloha spirit.. the shave ice...was very icy, more like a snow-cone vs. a shave ice. The ice cream was very yummy lilikoi cheesecake...oh yes). We've experienced Ululani's many times on Maui prior to the fires and also Motsumoto's on Oahu and I guess that's what we use as the benchmark. We will go back - absolutely. Support local especially in a less tourist area.

This place is open until 6 p.m. on the days it operates, which is great because many shave ice shops tend to close earlier, so we were happy to be able to stop by even after coming back from the beach. We arrived a little after 5 p.m., and there were already two groups in line, which shows how popular it is. The shop only accepts cash, so it’s important to keep that in mind when visiting. Although it has a storefront, the setup is similar to a food truck—there is no indoor seating, and only two benches outside. I personally prefer natural flavors, but this shop only offers lychee as a natural option. We had two medium shave ices. My husband had the rainbow, and I had one with three flavors: watermelon, lychee, and strawberry, topped with a scoop of coffee-flavored ice cream. Both had soft, pleasant colors and were delicious and soothing. The shop seems to be located in a small local shopping center along Akoni Pule Highway. Although the storefront is unassuming and easy to miss, the parking area is spacious, making it a casual and convenient place to stop by.🍧

Thirteen of us arrived at 5:00pm and ordered ice cream and shave ice. The ice cream is home made and tastes great! Since the place closes at 6pm we had to make sure we had plenty of time to order and eat!

This place was great. Saw a line forming to try this place so we jumped in. Wait was not bad, the gentleman working was pretty quick. There were a few different flavors I saw but didn't know what they tasted like, such as LiHing Mui (fermented plum) was actually really good and Ube flavored Ice Cream (Sweet potato) also yummy. He gave us a sample of both. The portion is good and the price was reasonable. He definitely was not frugal with the syrup. He also was very friendly. I would recommend stopping here and giving it a try. If you read this review, please hit the like button. Thank you! NOTE: They also have sugar- free options.
