Mighty Sushi
About
A Taste of Japan in Pahoa Village
Tucked away amidst the eclectic charm of Pahoa Village, Mighty Sushi brings a focused, minimalist approach to Japanese cuisine in the Puna district. This isn't your typical high-volume dining hall; it is a quiet refuge for locals and travelers alike who appreciate the art of the roll without the unnecessary flair.
The Omakase Spirit
The kitchen prides itself on sourcing fresh ingredients to create balanced, authentic flavors. Regulars often gravitate toward their signature spicy tuna rolls and sashimi platters that highlight the clean, oceanic profiles expected of top-tier fish. You will notice the subtle scent of seasoned sushi rice and crisp nori the moment you step through the door. It is a no-frills environment where the craft takes center stage, making it an ideal spot for a quick, high-quality lunch or a relaxed dinner.
An Authentic Puna Observation
While the atmosphere is calm and inviting, keep in mind that Pahoa’s unique pace of life applies here; service follows the "island time" rhythm, so come prepared to disconnect from your phone and simply enjoy the company you’re with. Parking in the village can be a bit of a puzzle during peak hours, but the walk to the front door is short and gives you a chance to soak in the vibrant, alternative energy of the main street. If you find yourself craving a reliable meal that feels personal and prepared with genuine care, this local gem is the place to settle in.

Ordered food for 4, was told 25 minutes until ready. Took almost an hour. In that time other customers were allowed to dine in even though sign says take out only. They ordered and ate and left before our food was done. Sushi was good and portions were decent, ramen tasted like canned chicken noodle soup. Chicken katsu was fried in the same oil as the sushi so it tasted like fish. I don't write many reviews but this experience wasn't great and we won't be returning.

It was surprisingly delicious! I only had to wait about twenty minutes after ordering. I'd love to come back again!

I don't even know where to begin. There was a small table set up with a menu, as they are take-out only establishment. As I was looking over the menu and the various items they offer, I just couldn't decide. One of the workers actually invited me into the store and turned an overhead light on and showed me the picture menu they had available. Upon looking at the picture menu, my choice was made. We got the Spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, salmon with cream cheese, and California roll. When I tell you this place did NOT disappoint, we demolished the spicy tuna and salmon with cream cheese rolls on the way home. I did manage to get a picture of the shrimp tempura and California roll before we finished it off. They are also very reasonably priced. I just can't say enough, it was freaking amazing!!!

Dear lord... I just finished eating some of the most affordable sushi and above all it was AMAZINGG! I highly recommend the place! Also the music was just perfect for the family style restaurant! 😍 I was worried after reading some of the recent reviews and more so about the hours of the place after trying to stop by last week for lunch to see them closed. My wife and I dropped by tonight, Monday July 24th 3023, and waited for the opening at 6 p.m. Covid and everything that happened recently may have affected the hours of operation but the food still doesn't disappoint. Rolls that were massive and plentiful in just the perfect way. Sauced perfectly and even though I wasn't too hungry, I still destroyed 2.5 rolls. Fish was still fresh, the tempura shrimp rolls were crisp and had a perfect crunch to it. We even tried a few of the deep fried rolls just to explore and they were amazing. All fresh made(waited 30 minutes but well worth the wait for 6 rolls ). First visited in 2019 and planned on visiting every year after but due to the pandemic we were delayed for longer than expected. Glad to see that they hold up exactly to my reaction from all those years ago.

Can’t believe I’ve never written a review, I’ve been coming regularly since I was 17 (awhile lol). I always call in first, and it’s always been 20-35 minutes(I also call the same time of day). The portions are well sized, aesthetically pleasing and above all TASTY! I spend about $40 but I split it over 2-3 sittings. My favorites are Smoky taste, Volcano roll (if extra hungry), and yellowtail lava!!!

No dine in currently. I would recommend ordering ahead of time. It took 20-30 minutes to prepare my food but there were multiple people ahead of me and it’s fresh made sushi so I would say that’s ok. All of the food was delicious. I really liked the spicy yellow tail hand roll and the Hell-Hot roll, though the ladder did not live up to its name. Still delicious.

Sweeter miso. High in umami. Not enough tofu. But the broth is very nice. The kids enjoyed the basic California, we loved the island, samurai, and Arizona sunset. The flavors blend really well and you can tell everything is freshly made. Big rolls. Only weird part was when we found a rock hard seed in one of the rolls. It is still to go only.
