A Pahoa Village Gem for Thai Classics

Tucked away in the heart of Pahoa, Ning's Thai Cuisine has become a go-to spot for those craving bold, authentic spices in the Puna district. The dining room reflects the laid-back spirit of the Big Island, featuring a no-frills, open-air setup that lets in the humid island breeze while the kitchen fills the air with the unmistakable scent of lemongrass, galangal, and spicy bird's eye chili.

Signature Plates and Local Character

The menu leans into traditional Thai comfort food. Patrons frequently gravitate toward the Pad Thai, which balances the perfect amount of tamarind tang against the crunch of crushed peanuts. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the green curry is a standout, swimming with crisp vegetables and tender proteins. While the service is warm and friendly, it operates on 'island time,' so expect a relaxed pace that pairs well with an ice-cold Thai iced tea.

The Pahoa Experience

Visiting this local favorite is less about white-tablecloth formality and more about honest cooking. You might hear the local chatter of Pahoa residents and visitors alike, adding to the bustling, informal energy of the space. Be mindful that parking in the village can occasionally get tight during peak dinner hours, so arriving a few minutes early is a smart move. Whether you are coming back from a day exploring the nearby lava fields or just looking for a consistent, flavorful meal in East Hawaii, Ning's delivers a straightforward, sensory-rich dining experience that feels quintessentially Puna.

Sawati Ka! I love this place so much! After living in Thailand last year, I was craving Thai food. This place has some of the best I’ve had in a long time. I come every week and Nu teaches me a little bit of Thai each time. The pumpkin curry is delicious. Pot ties always on point. I love that. There are brown rice options and you can specify your spice level. In the middle of Pahoa town just down the street from island naturals. You can pick up Health food at the store while you wait for your order. Or dine in at the beautiful location! Kop kun ma ka! 🐝🎶

This has got to be some of the best Thai food I’ve ever had. The service was wonderful, the location is adorable and the food is to die for. All the vegetarian options are by default vegan. I had the Mee ka ti and I will be dreaming about this dish until I come back.

The food was outstanding, but what impressed me more was the service. My husband and I arrived on a night where they were filled to capacity along with orders to go and patrons waiting outside to eat. The staff remained friendly and efficient which in turn, kept the atmosphere warm and relaxed. The food was some of the best Thai we have had anywhere.

Nings Thai Cuisine has quickly become one of my favorite places to eat. The staff are absolutely amazing — warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive. They make you feel right at home the moment you walk in. The food is delicious across the board. Every dish is full of flavor, beautifully balanced, and clearly made with care. And I have to confess… I am completely addicted to their mango sticky rice. It’s the perfect sweet finish — creamy, fresh, and honestly one of the best versions I’ve ever had. If you’re craving great Thai food with outstanding service, Nings Thai Cuisine is the spot. Highly recommend!

I've eaten here a bunch of times. I usually get their Massaman Curry with no peanuts. I love it. I have had the Panang Curry and liked it. I was not a fan of the beef satay. The meat wasn't tender, it was dry and overcooked. Thai Iced Tea is great, and while the Thai Iced Coffee was okay, I wouldn't get it again, just has an odd flavor. I also thought the sticky rice was good too. Tonight I tried the Crying Tiger Steak. I am not a fan of it at all. I'm not a fan of the flavor and I think it has fish sauce in it. I hate seafood and it tastes like I'm eating fish slightly. Absolutely disgusting. But even without the fish sauce I wouldn't have liked it. The menu says marinated in spices and then served with a sauce on the side. Without the sauce on the side it would have no flavor at all. It's also expensive for the amount of food you get. $26.95 for a tiny portion of steak and some plain rice. If you look past my steak review, I think the other curries are good. I'm going to try the basil dish next time.

The freshness of all the ingredients and flavor is incredible. Although I have had alot of thai food since being here in Hawaii, the balance of flavors and the simplicity of the green curry truely captured my heart. Highly recommend !!

It was the only restaurant actually open along their stretch of road, but it was really good. The food was great, and the service was friendly. The food came out really fast. They were really on top of refilling your cup of water. The only slight complaint I had was the atmosphere; it was a bit gaudy and Buddha-heavy. And it got a bit noisy. They also had tacky ads for food items under the glass top of each table. But overall, it was great. I recommend the mee ka tee.
