A Gateway to Pahoa’s Pacific Roots

Stepping into La Hiki Ola Kava Bar feels like an intentional departure from the humid bustle of Pahoa Village. This is a sanctuary for those looking to swap the sharp buzz of caffeine for the grounding, earthy ritual of kava. As you walk in, the room is often heavy with the scent of dried kava root—a pungent, nutty aroma that defines the experience before you even take your first shell.

The Ritual of the Shell

The space is built for slow conversation. Rather than loud music or high-energy chaos, you’ll find low-slung seating and a subdued, communal atmosphere that encourages lingering. The menu focuses on high-quality noble kava, served traditionally in coconut shells. Expect a slightly tongue-numbing sensation; it is a tell-tale sign of a potent brew. The barkeeps here are well-versed in the origins of their product, often sourcing from volcanic soils that lend a distinct profile to the drink.

Local Nuance

It is worth noting that the interior leans into a rustic, DIY aesthetic that reflects the raw, unpolished charm of the Puna district. The lighting is intentionally dim, making it easy to lose track of time while you wait for the kava to settle your nerves. If you arrive during peak hours, you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with locals—don’t be surprised if the seating feels a bit tighter than a standard coffee shop, but that’s all part of the social fabric here. It’s an ideal spot for anyone seeking a low-key night out where the priority is clarity of mind rather than high-octane celebration.

The man that runs the bar is a human on earth..yet metaphorically speaking..he is a GURDIAN ANGEL..very well possibly infact he saved my life or money as in he stopped an armed robbery and biotoxic/chemical poisoning and whatever events would have occured after that. God Bless your land and keep the Lava at bay so I may come drink "Fresh Kava," with the most amazing people on earth again. God shines through the eyes of your people. Tears of joy come to my eyes as well as thoughts of how grateful and sincere the people of the Big Island. Showed me Life and LOVE. Aloha y Mahalo!!! IN GOD WE TRUST. Novus Ordo Seclorum. Annuit Coeptis. From Brendan Bunnell: unify us all as one love under all with in all as all that is all. I was day dreaming and stunning in many doors but thanks to La Hiki Olla, I opened my eyes and have awoken my soul to the highest level of counciousness Amen, was

Excellent atmosphere and great vibes from everyone. They had open mic the night we were there and people were having a great time jamming. The kava was good and the staff was helpful with helping us decide what to order.

This place has a 'je ne sais quoi' like no other.. !! the kava they served 'issa' was locally grown down the road! They also sold 'Noni' (a local fruit) shot, they are grown up the street!! These kids know how to give you an authentic Hawaiian kava experience. Pahoa is such a charming little village of a town. Aloha and Mahalo 🤙

We stopped by after a rainy day at the beach and were drawn in by the atmosphere. The bartender was awesome at explaining what Kava was. We tried two kinds and enjoyed our time here. Try something new and enjoy good company * and great music. Thank you for introducing us to Kava and Nahko!
