A Slice of Pahoa Soul

When you find yourself cruising through the heart of Pahoa village, the smell of bubbling mozzarella and char-kissed dough signals you have arrived at Boogie Woogie Pizza. This isn't your typical polished chain; it is a rough-around-the-edges, laid-back spot that embodies the quirky, counter-culture spirit of the Big Island's lower Puna district.

The Pizza Experience

The menu focuses on straightforward, hearty pies with a crust that strikes a balance between chewy and crisp. The kitchen leans into generous toppings, often sourcing local ingredients whenever the harvest allows. Expect a soundtrack of classic rock or island grooves playing just loud enough to compete with the whir of the pizza oven. The space feels lived-in and honest, making it a favorite for locals grabbing a box after a long day or travelers looking for a quick, reliable dinner without the fuss of white-tablecloth service.

Know Before You Go

Parking in the village can be a bit of a shuffle during peak hours, and the seating area is cozy, meaning you might end up sharing a conversation with your neighbors. It is the kind of place where the charm is found in the imperfections. If you are craving a solid, no-nonsense pie in a setting that reflects the authentic Pahoa lifestyle, this is your destination. Keep in mind that service operates on "island time," so bring a bit of patience and enjoy the local scene while your order is prepared.

[AKA Boogie Woogie Pizza] Truthfully, this is some of the worst pizza I’ve ever had. The restaurant is massively cluttered on one side (almost hoarder style), and while I love a greasy mom and pop joint… this isn’t it. We thought maybe if we got drunk enough, the pizza would be tolerable, but no amount of drunk made it better. Sad, because I always prefer to support a local restaurant.

Generous portions for the price. It was fun talking with the owner, Ophelia, and meeting a fellow Armenian family. True mom and pop shop. Our group was glad we stopped in and now have leftover pizza to enjoy tomorrow (:

The food was good. Pizza was lovely. The lady who told us outside drinks were not accepted on their patio seating left a poor taste in our mouth so to speak. She was snide and in poor tone said they had the same drinks there out drinks were not welcome To which A) your order taker did not mention our drinks would not be welcome and B) we have very particular children. I was put off by the way the person commented to my wife and would not eat here again because of the attitude. Btw it was 8:15pm and no other patrons were there. We sat on the patio because all the interior booths were covered in paperwork and the interior of the place was sweltering. There were only 6 seats outside.

I can't believe how good this pizza is. I even had a couple of the slices at the end of the day that had been sitting in the window. Ophelia was the best and insisted on putting them in the oven for a few minutes. Even those were so freaking good!! She tried her best to keep me from tipping as much as I did, but I am a tourist and need to show my appreciation and thanks for the privilege to visit the island. Plus, i would have driven back to tip because of how good that pizza is. Fresh made and mad generous portions for the price. The price is amazing, especially for Hawaii. You can't beat this. It's the best pizza and warmest service you will probably ever have in the states. If you are anywhere near the area, make the drive. You're welcome.

Great pizza. This definitely has an authentic feel. The price is beyond fair for the product you get. The entire family enjoyed it, especially the young kids. I will be back again during my visit to the island.

I went here based on reviews. At first, I thought I might be at the wrong place. It appeared run down and I normally wouldn’t consider eating at a place like this. It took a while to get our (very) large pizza, but it was fantastic. I was stunned at how affordable it was for such a large pizza. Too much to eat in one sitting, so we took the other half for a next day meal. It was even good as a leftover.

Had a Hawaiian pizza last night- delicious. Hot, from scratch and incredibly reasonably priced. The staff was all friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to coming back in the near future.

The pizzas (and calzones) here are huge and super tasty! Generous with the toppings, and serve this incredible garlic butter with orders! They are open at 3pm now, and last call at 8:30 I believe? They're kinda terrible about answering the phone though so you probably have to park and go in to place your order. Cash only!

OMG, that was the best calzone I've had in years! Huge and delicious. The assortment of dippy sauces was perfect. Loved that garlic butter.
