More Than Just a Quick Stop in Waikoloa

Stepping into Whaler’s General Store at the Highlands Center offers a quintessential slice of Hawaii island life. While many travelers view it as a convenience pitstop for sunscreen or bottled water, those in the know treat it as a reliable resource for authentic local snacks. The air inside holds that distinct, cool chill of an island market, smelling faintly of macadamia nut cookies and fresh brewed Kona coffee.

The Island Provisions Advantage

If you find yourself navigating the expansive resort areas of the Kohala Coast, this store is your go-to for grab-and-go nourishment. You will find a rotating selection of Spam musubi, which provides that necessary salt hit after a morning of snorkeling, alongside shelves stocked with locally produced snacks and boutique Hawaiian gifts that aren’t the typical tourist kitsch. The store excels at balancing the utilitarian needs of visitors with a genuine Hawaiian merchant sensibility.

What to Expect

The layout is tight, and during the mid-afternoon rush, it can get a bit crowded as beachgoers filter in from the nearby Waikoloa resorts. It is best to approach your visit with a bit of island patience, especially near the checkout lines. It serves as a communal anchor for the Highlands Center, making it the perfect spot to pick up a cold drink or a last-minute souvenir before heading back toward the coast. Whether you are a resident stocking up on basics or a vacationer needing a quick caffeine fix, the staff maintains a welcoming pace that matches the relaxed spirit of the Big Island.

Terribly high prices. Almost $100 dollars for a sweatshirt.

Whalers General Store offers a wide variety of products. It’s part mini mart with food, drinks and snack options and part tourist supply house. Their variety of items range from fair to extremely overpriced to the point of being laughable. They offer a myriad of tourist based trinkets, glassware, clothes and other tourist related products. They must know what they’re doing as they have been doing business at the same location for decades. There are numerous ABC stores located throughout Hawaii.

Great local convenience store. A little upscale from ABC

I brought breakfast from here a couple of mornings and some souvenirs as well. It is in many ways "just a small general store". Sure it is more expensive than a Walmart and the selection is smaller, but it is well-situated near the resorts and has a particularly good selection of cold drinks.

It’s essentially a glorified ABC Store, with higher prices. They sell a lot of souvenirs, snacks, and some local foods. Although a bunch of their “local foods” are from the Maika’i brand, which is the generic label for the Foodland grocery store chain. What are those doing here?

Convenient store for those who stay at Marriott or Hilton: it has a bit of everything, from drink, snack, souvenirs, local products, swim and snorkeling gear. Most of the big brand prices are higher than those you can find in the bigger towns (but 35 mins away), the trade off for time off enjoying the beach and surrounding beautiful areas.

I was there in July and found it was adequately staffed with experienced folks. Good customer service and variety of clothing, gifts and food. I found their prices to be very reasonable, which is unusual for the islands. I’ll be back to this store.
