A Night of Polynesian Heritage Under the Waikoloa Sky

As the sun dips below the horizon along the Kohala Coast, the Sunset Luau at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott transforms the resort grounds into a celebration of island culture. This isn't just a dinner show; it is an immersive look into the traditions of the Pacific, set against the backdrop of Anaehoʻomalu Bay.

The Feast and the Flame

The scent of kalua pig pulled fresh from the imu pit drifts across the ocean breeze, mingling with the salt air. The buffet spread features local staples like lomi lomi salmon, fresh poi, and haupia, providing a genuine taste of Hawaii. Watching the dancers move to the rhythmic pulse of the ipu heke drums as the sky turns deep shades of violet is the primary draw here.

What to Expect

Because the event takes place outdoors on the Marriott’s expansive lawn, you will want to bring a light sweater for when the evening breeze picks up off the water. The energy is vibrant and family-friendly, though be prepared for a bit of a crowd as the show nears its climax. The fire-knife performance is the undeniable highlight—the sound of the spinning blades cutting through the air and the roar of the crowd make for a high-octane finale.

If you are looking to experience a traditional luau without leaving the comfort of the Waikoloa resort area, this gathering offers a polished, professional, and culturally respectful evening. It remains a staple for those visiting the Big Island who want to connect with Hawaiian storytelling through dance, music, and a communal meal under the stars.

This was an absolutely incredible experience!!!!! The MC was hilarious, brilliant, educational, and led the show flawlessly. Each dancer was unique and exciting to watch and of course the fire dancer was spectacular. The band was so spot on, lights and sound, I mean truly this was a top notch show and I am in the performance industry myself so I know good shows. The food was notably good considering this is a luau buffet we were really impressed. We felt very educated about the whole culture and history of Hawaii while also thoroughly entertained. All the bad reviews if you notice they are complaining about price vs. value but I think people underestimate what the value of something really is because the amount of hands, energy, time, effort, and attention to detail this all took was certainly worth the cost. 10/10 would recommend and honestly I would go back tomorrow to do it all again!!!!

AMAZING show! Totally worth the price!! Food was ok - best it can be for a buffet. Atmosphere was fabulous- sunset right there! The show was a 10 out of 10 - the story telling was wonderful, the dancers and musicians were unbelievable and we were all highly impressed!! Had such a fun family night and learned about the culture. Highly recommend!

This was our first luau. We paid for the upgrade, so we had close seats to stage, came with a real flower lei and a box of cookies. To me, it was great overall, being my first one I have nothing to compare it to. I thought they did a great job with the cultural and historical significance behind various elements. Venue: you're outside with limited to no shade. Open bar: decent selection and both bartenders were great Food/buffet: I thought it was a good variety and allowed for ways to try new things. The shredded pork was really tasty, though some parts were over salted Show: Again, first one, but I thought it was a good experience from start to finish. Yes the fire dance was crazy cool. But they also did a good job with some audience participation. MISC: they have an onsite photographer, this seems a little pricey, but everything in Hawaii is pricey. Our upgrade did get us $10 off (small win)

Was super excited for this, but what a let down. Food was mediocre, the entertainment was meh. I’ll give it to the fire dance guy, he was great. They make you stand in line until opening instead of just seating as you came, lots of older people forced to wait to sit. They need to rethink this as everything was obviously set up and ready to go well before the 430 opening time. Lucky it was cloudy because there is NO shade. Bar/drinks were mediocre at best. The price is way too much for what you get. They have a photographer on hand and charge $40 for a single photo. What a joke, this photo should be included for the price of what you’re paying per person, should be given one photo per family. I highly recommend going to a different luau as this one was not that great, I have been to several and can’t recommend this one to anyone. From the time it started, the entertainment was really nothing special, it was SO slow moving the entire night. They have these giant light poles that will block your view if you’re seated on the sides. There was really nothing that made this special or gave it a wow factor until the fire dance. The sunset in the distance was probably the best thing about this.

Food was really nothing great. We sat in the dark for show to start for 1/2 hour. Show ok - only 6 dancers (3 men and 3 women) for all dances. Fire dance was good. Definitely don’t pay extra for front row seats.

Not worth buying tickets to the show because lot of people in the resort just watch it for free. Its a open venue in the Marriott resort, we saw lot of people standing around the venue and watching. The management needs to look into this. And its also not worth buying premium seating tickets, lot of folks just pull their chairs and sit in the front while watching the show. The food and drinks was average.

This was a great luau! There’s a little cultural overview, fire dancing (our favorite), open bar and great food. This is buffet style and similar to a wedding you’re called by table. Get there early as seating is first come first serve. There’s a VIP option which gives you closer seating, a box of cookies and one of the first tables for the buffet. They use the traditional emu oven which others in the area don’t. It was a fun evening which I would highly recommend.

This was everything you would expect at a luau: all you can eat buffet with all the traditional foods and desserts, all you can drink bar, a beautiful sunset, perfect weather, beautiful and handsome hula and fire dancers, lots of talent. The host was funny and really knows the heritage of Hawaii. Our family enjoyed it very much!
