A Slice of Italy in the Heart of the Big Island

Finding authentic, handmade pasta while surrounded by the volcanic landscapes of Waikoloa is a delightful surprise. At Pueo's Osteria, the air carries the faint, comforting scent of garlic and simmering San Marzano tomatoes, creating an immediate sense of warmth that contrasts with the tropical breeze outside. This isn't your standard resort-style eatery; it feels like a neighborhood haunt where the locals congregate to share stories over bottles of bold Italian reds.

The Art of the Handmade

Chef James Babian brings an impressive depth of culinary experience to this corner of the Big Island, focusing on locally sourced ingredients that blur the line between traditional Italian techniques and Hawaiian terroir. You will notice the dedication in their house-made pastas; the texture of the tagliatelle is perfectly al dente, catching sauces that taste like they’ve been reduced for hours. Do not overlook the specialty pizzas that come out of their high-heat ovens with a characteristic char that provides a satisfying, smoky crunch.

What to Expect

The interior is lively, often bordering on boisterous, which makes it an excellent choice for a loud, laughter-filled dinner with friends or family. It is a bustling room, so be prepared for a vibrant, high-energy acoustic environment. If you arrive during peak dinner service, the energy is infectious, though the parking lot in this complex can get quite snug—plan for a little extra time to secure your spot. Whether you are craving a decadent gorgonzola-drizzled steak or a classic, simple carbonara, Pueo’s captures the soul of Italian hospitality with a distinct Waikoloa flair.

Perfect environment, service, and food! The pasta was the best I’ve ever had, and they carried every flavor of my Alfredo Tagaliolini to perfection! Our server was spectacular and helped us with any questions that rose up. Overall amazing place, definitely recommend to the upmost for any fans of Italian cuisine!

The best Italian food we’ve ever had! We dined here twice during our 6-day vacation because it was just that good. The wait staff were absolutely amazing. We were celebrating our honeymoon, and the staff even signed a card for us, which was such a thoughtful touch. Both of our servers, a lovely woman whose name we unfortunately forgot & Tucker, provided top-notch service. We truly can’t say enough great things about this restaurant and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience.

Went in early to get the Early Owl specials. The food was very “just okay” for the price. The full Dinner menu prices are even more expensive. And the portions were very small. Everyone else, including ourselves, ordered multiple dishes just to feel a little full by the end of the meal.

EDIT: DO NOT RECOMMEND - I discovered the waitress modified my tip amount after my trip was over and I had to fight it through my bank. This is highly unprofessional behavior and very alarming, I feel I should have been offered a gift card and an apology as I spent a lot of time and money there just to be taken advantage of afterwards, then had to waste my time fighting with the credit card company. Original review: Overall I enjoyed celebrating a special night with my family at Pueo's. The food was really good and I appreciated the variety they offered. I will say that our waitress was very rushed and did not do any small talk - she did not ask where we were from, why we were visitng, whether we were celebrating anything etc. The flatware is really cheap and should be upgraded for the caliber restaurant this is. You will want to be certain that you get a reservation because the restaurant gets packed quickly! I also discovered they are charged credit card fees so be prepared for that rediculousness.

Nice little local spot. Matthew was great at the bar. We ordered from aribeta shrimp squid ink pasta and MPA pizza. Can't go wrong with that combination.

One of our favorite dining spots in the Big Island. Top notch service and delicious food served. The chicken (Pollo ala) marsala dish is outstanding. Brussel sprouts is also a great choice too.

Amazing Italian restaurant. Because everything is cooked fresh and from scratch, the kitchen can easily modify dishes from the menu or even create something completely new based on your suggestions and what ingredients they have available. The owner, who is also the chef, is an excellent cook and immediately understands what you’re looking for, which makes the whole experience feel very personal. The kitchen team, waiters, and bartenders are all very friendly and welcoming - you can tell there are genuinely great people working there. Another big plus is the value — the prices are very reasonable, especially compared to resort restaurants, while the quality of the food is excellent. I always enjoy coming back here and highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Italian food and a great atmosphere ❤️

We had a wonderful experience at Pueo’s Osteria. The vodka sauce pasta was absolutely delicious—rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The pizza had a great crispy crust that made every bite satisfying, and the focaccia bread was tender, fresh, and full of flavor. Everything we tried was excellent, and the service made the experience even better. Our server was very friendly, attentive, and helpful throughout the meal. We loved everything about our visit and would definitely recommend Pueo’s Osteria to others. We look forward to returning the next time we’re in the area!

All fresh pasta and great service. They get quite busy, but we were able to sneak in without a reservation. Not bad view at sunset on the patio. Probably everything on the menu is great.

This place is honestly the best restaurant I’ve ever been to on the Big Island — and this is only my second time in Kona, so trust me, I came ready to compare! The food was incredible. We ordered the Radiatore Ala Vodka “Pink Sauce” with shrimp… and WOW. The kind of food that makes you want to literally lick the plate clean — but I controlled myself and stuck to scraping every inch, every corner, every last centimeter of that sauce like a civilized person. Our waiter, Calvin, told us to try the tiramisu for dessert, and I’m so glad we listened because it was the best I’ve had in my entire life. I was genuinely sad when it was finished — real heartbreak. We’re already planning to go back again before our trip ends. When we arrived, we sat in the outdoor area and the most beautiful, colorful pink sunset appeared — I’m going to share a picture because it seriously set the whole vibe. It felt like the universe was saying, “Yes, you picked the right place.” And you can’t miss the wall of celebrity photos with the owner when you walk in — everyone from Rob Lowe to Dave Grohl to Ivanka Trump has eaten here with the ownerIt totally adds to the charm and makes you think, “Okay, we’re in for something good.” This place seriously is the best spot I’ve ever eaten at on this island. I could live off this food. With the whole trip being overcast and rainy, this restaurant honestly saved the vacation. It’s worth traveling all the way from Utah just to eat here. So grateful we found it, and already counting down until round two! I also must add that we had dinner reservations for two ahead of time and had a choice between sitting inside and outside. We sat outside, but there was a roof above and fans, so no bugs or flies got in the way.
