A Coastal Dining Landmark on the Big Island

Perched along the pristine Waikoloa coastline, Hawaii Calls Restaurant offers an open-air dining experience that captures the essence of island living. The space is defined by its breezy, plantation-style architecture, where the sound of crashing Pacific waves provides a constant, rhythmic backdrop to your meal. It is a place where the humidity clings to your skin and the salt air mixes with the aroma of kiawe-grilled proteins.

Authentic Flavors from the Pacific

The menu leans heavily into local provenance, focusing on fresh catch-of-the-day preparations and regional produce. Their signature approach often centers on Pacific Rim fusion, utilizing ingredients like locally sourced macadamia nuts and Kona coffee in rubs or sauces. The kitchen team prioritizes the simplicity of Hawaiian seafood, allowing the natural sweetness of the ocean to take center stage. When you visit, keep in mind that the outdoor seating, while stunning, can be quite gusty; you might want to bring a light layer if you are prone to catching a chill as the sun dips below the horizon.

The Waikoloa Atmosphere

The atmosphere is unpretentious and relaxed, catering primarily to families and couples looking for a quintessential island sunset dinner. Because of its popularity among those staying at nearby resorts, the dining room maintains a high energy throughout the evening. Service is typically efficient, though you may find that the pacing slows down as the kitchen navigates the rush of patrons arriving simultaneously for prime golden-hour views. Whether you are looking for a casual lunch or a quintessential Hawaiian dinner, the restaurant serves as a central hub for visitors exploring the Kohala Coast.

Truffle fries are a joke. Drenched in oil. Not a hint of truffle and the cheese isn’t even Parmesan. Not worth the calories or money ($18). Service was ok. Essentially a take out venue.

Absolutely amazing experience. Our first stop to begin our Hawaii adventure and it absolutely did not disappoint. Food was amazing, drinks were amazing, the view is breathtaking at sunset and the staff were friendly! Thank you for a great vacation kickoff!

This is our breakfast spot everyday that we stay at the Marriott. Right from being greeted and welcomed by the hostess Roxanne to the service provided by Elma, it just feels like coming home to family whenever we dine here. The view in the open dining area is amazing and you can't help but feel grateful to be in this beautiful spot on the Big Island. We were sad to see that there were no omelet station or the same high level of baked goods, but the hot buffet with eggs, Portuguese sausage, and other items were still delicious. They also have some local hot sauces from Spicy Ninja Sauce had me buying some as unique gifts to take home for family. The service is fast and friendly and the buffet is clean. Thank you to the crew here for always showing us so much love, kindness and the meaning of Aloha.

The food was fine. The French toast was good, pancakes were fine, eggs Benedict was okay except the kalua pork was too heavy and the loco moco was interesting and good. The service was slow and inattentive, waiters barely checked in. When the waiter did pick up plates once we were done, they took the plates that were empty, leaving the ones with food for the flies to nibble bother us while we were waiting for the check. The biggest issue was that there were loads of flies all the time. We've eaten on the beach a lot while on the island, this was the only place that flies were an issue. Might be because they have a food and trash station outside where people eat. We felt it was overpriced for the service, atmosphere and food quality. You're not on the beach you're further out. Also we looked at the buffet and it's definitely not worth the $49. Everything is pre made on heaters (except for the fruit). Can't recommend.

I came for a drink and oysters, and I loved spending time at the bar with bartender Lacey. She’s a joy to interact with and very accommodating for my special requests. I highly recommend the oysters, ribs (so tender!), and the mac nut white rice (ask for a side of it, don’t think it’s on the menu). Although I didn’t eat breakfast here, the buffet is pretty nice and the kaula pork eggs Benedict looks delicious! Enjoy this video of the buffet.

We came here for breakfast, the food was delicious! The service was great, they were very accomodating for our group's diet preferences. The croissant sandwich was so good! Poke bowl is also delicious for lunch!

My family and I decided to hop down to this restaurant and the vegan curry was AMAZING!!! I was feeling like something a little less dense than a burger and I’m so glad I chose that dish! The ulu was lightly fried so it had a wonderful mouthfeel! 10/10 going back soon just to get that dish again! The peach cobbler and strawberry cheesecake were also yummy!

If you’re staying at the Marriott, this is the only restaurant on property. We are here for breakfast and lunch and the food was pretty decent. Their breakfast buffet had a very large assortment of items, my favorite being the Poha Scones. The staff were all very friendly and always welcomed us with a smile. Lunch was a little different experience - the service wasn’t as good, probably because they’re also catering to the people at the pool, and the food was just ok. The prices are expensive but unless you venture out to eat somewhere else, this is your only option while on property at the Marriott.

May 2023: Stayed at the Marriott Waikoloa for three nights and had breakfast each morning and dinner one night. Dinner: Service was great. Tried the prime rib cooked medium rare. The meal came with a nice side of veggies that were perfectly cooked. We liked it so much, we ordered another side 😋. The prime rib was delicious. Great salted crust. Would definitely come back again for another slice! Breakfast: The continental breakfast buffet was very good. Hit the spot each morning. Got the oatmeal with raisins. Coffee was good. Much better than the standard coffee house 👍. Overall, a great place for breakfast or dinner!

Good selection for continental breakfast. With fresh fruits, pastries, cereal, scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, bacon, waffle, French toast, etc., it is quite a filling meal. One thing to note is the complimentary breakfast for Titanium/Platinum members only covers the cold dishes, but we weren't told so on the first day and thought everything in the buffet section was covered, until we got the bill the next day. Lunch is decent, though definitely a bit pricey, as expected for resort food. The taste itself is decent. Only reason for the one star is because there is some kind of plasticky thing in one of the fish, which leaves somewhat of a bad taste in our mouth. The waitress did say they will bring it up to the kitchen, so hopefully it never happens again.
