A South Kona Institution

When you find yourself winding through the coffee-rich slopes of Kealakekua, the iconic yellow sign at Sandy’s Drive In acts as a beacon for locals and travelers alike. This isn't a place for white tablecloths or complex culinary theory; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense window into the spirit of island comfort food. The air often carries the savory, slightly sweet scent of Hawaiian-style plate lunches drifting from the kitchen, a reminder of the straightforward approach to feeding the community that has defined this spot for generations.

Menu Staples for the Hungry Traveler

The menu leans heavily into the comfort classics that define Kona's casual dining scene. You will find hearty portions of loco moco, thick gravy-smothered hamburger steaks, and crispy fried chicken that hits the spot after a long day of snorkeling in nearby Kealakekua Bay. The kitchen excels at the kind of food that warms the soul without needing an expensive price tag. If you are craving a quick, authentic bite before heading back up the mountain toward Holualoa, this is your primary stop.

The Reality of Local Dining

Part of the charm here is the rustic, utilitarian setting. It is the type of place where you might have to navigate a slightly crowded parking lot or wait a few minutes while the grill man works his magic, but that is simply part of the rhythm in rural Hawaii. The atmosphere is loud, energetic, and unapologetically casual. You aren't coming here for silence; you are coming here for the genuine camaraderie of a neighborhood joint where the staff knows their regulars by name. Pull up a seat at the outdoor benches, listen to the hum of the nearby highway, and dig into a meal that reflects the unpretentious heart of the Big Island.

I stopped by here because I wanted a quick and simple bite, and it was pretty much what I expected from a classic local spot. The food was solid, and you can tell they focus on doing the basics right without making everything overly complicated. It wasn't the fanciest meal, but it hit the spot when I was hungry and looking for something fast. It’s a good place to keep in mind if you are passing through and just want a straightforward lunch.

A local favorite, family owned and operated by three generations, Sandy's is a great place for classic plate lunches, diner fare, and local specialties at fair prices. I've been eating here since childhood and this is my favorite place to get a loco moco because it's one of the few places that uses real scratch gravy, not the dark brown stuff made from a powdered mix. The orange whip and Lilikoi drinks are bomb and hard to find anywhere else. Always order a large or you'll wish you had because they're that good. All the plate lunches are winners. You can't go wrong whatever you choose. The chili here is a great local-style chili which is hard to describe how it differs from Tex Mex chili. You just gotta try it especially if you're a chili fan. The sweet potato tempura is a unique sweet treat you gotta try if you like deep fried snacks. It can be a bit greasy so pass on it if that's not your jam. Follow on Facebook for daily specials and promotions.

I've been going back and leaving reviews for places I've visited in the past and this place stands out above so many others. Me and my father took a trip to the islands many years ago and we still talk about this place, even though we forgot the name. Spent 30 mins looking at maps to find this to leave a review. To start off, the food was out of this world. Simple and delicious. the atmosphere was really nice as well, nothing fancy, but you felt comfortable in there while you eat. Very friendly staff from what I can recall because we went back several times the week we stayed there. Tried fried spam for the first time here as well. When me and my wife go to Hawaii I will be taking her here as well.

Clean facilities, good food that’s cooked well and served quickly, healthy portions, surprisingly reasonable prices, friendly service, and I don’t think you can ask for anything else. I ordered the loco moco, my children had the breakfast plates with bacon, and wife had a cheeseburger. Would recommend to anyone. Might want to bring your own hot sauce if you like spicy food. Thank you Sandy’s!

Loco Moco plate was awesome. I’ve had a few from several different spots across the islands and Sandy’s is as good they come.

Good, fresh food at good prices. Rotating specials as supplies last and something for everyone: burgers, whole fried fish, and everything in-between. Fishburger comes with two freshly-fried mahi filets, and the mac salad is solid here.

We went to this place based on the reviews from TripAdvisor. Very reasonably priced and friendly service. The only negative is the over medium eggs came out a little underdone. The yeast donuts are made fresh and were pretty good. We would definitely eat here again and maybe try some of their dinner plates.

We ordered Bulgogi Fries. That was really good. I would order that again. We also ordered Chicken Katsu, Veal plate, Chicken Boat (substituted the fries for rice), and Sweet Potato Tempura. I felt that the Katsu could've been better. It was slightly overcooked. The Veal was nice and tender. I didn't get a chance to taste my son's chicken so I can't comment on that, but the sweet potato tempura was really good too. Slightly oily, but that's my only complaint for that. The flavors were really good and I'd go back again to try some other things on their menu.
