Pine Tree Cafe
About
A Taste of South Kona Tradition
Tucked away in the heart of Kealakekua, Pine Tree Cafe serves as a reliable anchor for locals craving authentic, no-frills Hawaiian plate lunches. This isn't a place for white tablecloths; it is where the scent of charred meat from the grill meets the salty breeze rolling up from the coast. The kitchen focuses on hearty portions that prioritize substance over style, making it a go-to spot for construction crews, surfers, and families looking for a quick, filling meal after a long day.
Signature Island Flavors
The menu remains loyal to the local staples. You will find their mochiko chicken is consistently crispy, offering that essential satisfying crunch that keeps residents coming back for more. They also excel at traditional beef stew and fresh fish options when available. Expect a casual walk-up counter experience where the staff keeps the line moving with efficiency, even during the busy lunch rush. While the limited parking in this bustling Kealakekua stretch can be a minor challenge, grabbing a styrofoam box of comfort food here is a rite of passage for anyone spending time on the Kona side.
Why This Spot Defines the Neighborhood
The atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious. The acoustic environment is often lively, filled with the hum of local conversations and the occasional clatter of takeout containers. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading down to the bay or fueling up for a trek through the coffee belt, Pine Tree Cafe delivers the kind of honest, high-calorie satisfaction that defines the Big Island dining culture.

Huge menu with many options- a little on the pricey side for some items but food was good. We got the fried rice omelette and the fried rice was very yummy- simple and not too salty or mushy. Lots of space and our order was ready quickly, however, there were some teeny flies that were very bothersome when trying to eat.

I ordered the teriyaki beef plate and was completely blown away by how delicious it was! The beef was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. This is a great spot for lunch, especially since they offer a wide variety of menu options to suit whatever you’re in the mood for. Despite being busy, the staff worked quickly and efficiently while still being friendly and easygoing. The excellent food, fast service, and welcoming atmosphere made for a fantastic experience. I will definitely be back the next time I’m in the area!

I got the lunch fried ahi plate and it was really good. They have my favorite Mac salad. The only bad thing I will say is the portion sizes are smaller and it was like $22 for the lunch plate

Visited recently and unfortunately had a poor experience. The salad served with our meal appeared moldy and not fresh, which is a serious hygiene concern. The rest of the food was average, but cleanliness and food safety are very important. I hope the management addresses this issue to prevent it from happening to other customers.

Great place to grab a quick, filling meal. The dining area gives cafeteria but makes for plenty of space. Mac was a bit weird to me, it was oddly grainy and I didn’t care for the corn. The Korean Chicken and Teriyaki Beef was fantastic. Nothing life-changing but still great food! Comparably cheap as well.

I got the Spicy Ahi Poke Plate and the Teriyaki Chicken Plate. Everything was super ono and incredibly filling! The poke was fresh with just the right amount of kick, and the portions were huge, definitely didn't leave hungry. It’s a nice casual spot to grab a plate lunch that actually hits the spot. (Posted are their several menus and desserts)

Most food looked really good Loco moco patty that was handmade was really good. The gravy seemed like it came out of a can and was not very warm. Looks like the burgers are very popular The club sandwich looked amazing

If you are looking for a local place with classic Hawaiian fare you are in the right place. The Loco Moco was good as was everything we ordered. Busy popular place, lots of locals. Indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of free parking, minutes from airport. Our flight was delayed so we made a stop, nice way to end the trip. Service was fast despite how busy they were.
