About
Overview & Vibe
Tucked away along the scenic Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua, Kaya's is the quintessential Big Island hidden gem. Stepping into this cozy cafe feels like arriving at a friend’s kitchen—it radiates a relaxed, authentic “hippie-chic” spirit that defines the best of Hawaii’s local culture. With a blend of indoor seating and a small, breezy outdoor area, Kaya's serves as a perfect pitstop for travelers exploring Kona’s coffee country. It is beloved by locals and lucky tourists alike for its unpretentious, friendly atmosphere and a commitment to wholesome, delicious scratch-made food.
Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes
Kaya's menu is a testament to the fact that simple, fresh ingredients reign supreme. Here is what you should order on your visit:
- The Veggie Bagel: A local favorite that elevates the humble bagel with fresh, crisp vegetables and high-quality spreads. It’s the perfect fuel for a day of sightseeing.
- Daily Artisan Quiche: Always rotating, their quiche is consistently cited as a standout. Expect a buttery, flaky crust paired with a rich, savory egg custard that feels like home cooking at its finest.
- Gluten-Free Pastries: Even if you aren't gluten-free, these pastries are a revelation. With a daily selection that changes based on inspiration and availability, you’ll find everything from decadent cookies to moist, flavorful treats that pair perfectly with their Kona coffee.
Insider Dining & Tips
Because Kaya’s is a small, popular establishment, patience is part of the experience. The kitchen prepares food with care, which means it isn’t a “fast food” pace—but it is well worth the wait. To avoid the peak morning rush, try to arrive before 9:00 AM. Since many visitors grab food to-go for their road trips, the crowd shifts quickly. If you see the parking lot looking full, don’t be discouraged; simply wait a few moments as spots open up regularly, or consider ordering ahead if you're on a tight schedule.
Location & Parking
Located at 79-7300 Mamalahoa Hwy, Kaya's is strategically situated near several major Kona coffee farms, including Kona Joe's. This makes it an ideal breakfast or lunch stop when you are heading up to explore the cool, lush mountainside. There is plenty of on-site parking directly outside the shop. While the lot can get busy, the turnover is frequent. Whether you are a resident or just driving through on your way to visit the local roasteries, Kaya's offers a taste of the island's authentic, laid-back culinary scene.

Make this a priority!
What a great experience! It was very early and most places were closed so we decided to give this place a try! I had a veggie bagel with everything. It couldn’t have been better or more delicious! My husband had one of the quiche choices and he loved it too. We will be back!

Our Favorite Place for Breakfast!
We accidentally stumbled upon Kaya's while being at the coffee tour almost next door at Kona Joe's - what a gem this place is! We are not vegan etc. and we feel in love with this place to the point that we made sure to revisit for another breakfast!

Food is delicious (though takes a while), pastry, sandwiches, desserts - they got it all. It's kinda "hippie style" as many other "green places" and it has a nice pleasant/friendly atmosphere - some tables inside, couple outside. People seemed to know each other and hang out here from time to time - which speaks a lot about this place.

Their pastry selection varies daily and both times there were some unique and delicious looking (and tasting) things!

TIP: plenty of parking outside but it does get busy at times, though many people pick up their food to go so just wait patiently

Great spot for a quick meal
Cute little spot. Wonderful pastries (somehow they are gluten free but they're wonderful). Good coffee. Quiche was fantastic. All with friendly service.
