A Morning Ritual in the Heart of Kona

As you wind your way through the lush, elevated slopes of Kealakekua, the air shifts. It turns crisp, scented with the unmistakable, deep aroma of roasting beans and damp volcanic earth. Menehune Coffee provides an essential stop for those navigating the winding roads of the Big Island, offering a focused, no-nonsense approach to the Kona coffee experience.

Authenticity Over Frills

This isn't your typical polished city cafe. The vibe here is distinctly local, reflecting the rugged beauty of the South Kona District. You will often find the space occupied by farmers and residents catching up on the day's local news while the grinder hums in the background—a rhythmic, industrial sound that punctuates the quiet morning air. The seating area is modest, and parking can be a bit of a dance during the morning rush, but that is simply part of the charm of patronizing a true community hub.

From Farm to Cup

The draw here is the purity of the product. By sourcing directly from nearby growers, Menehune Coffee serves cups that capture the brightness and medium-bodied complexity characteristic of Kona-grown Arabica. Whether you prefer a clean pour-over that highlights floral notes or a robust espresso that cuts through the humidity of the afternoon, the baristas here understand the nuances of the local harvest. It is the ideal pit stop for travelers heading toward the Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park or those simply looking to fuel up before a snorkeling trip at Kealakekua Bay. Expect a straightforward menu that prioritizes the quality of the bean above all else, served in a space that feels like a true slice of island life.

I loved stopping by this spot for a morning pick-me-up. The coffee was smooth and tasted really fresh, and the vibe inside was super relaxed and perfect for just hanging out for a bit. It’s a great little place to start your day if you appreciate a good cup of joe in a friendly atmosphere.

Coffee Savior in the morning. One look at the photo and you know what I think! I was so immersed in my coffee my other purchases were left on the counter but my server dashed out to make sure I would not miss the flavor fanticy I was about to engage in the calmness of their environment!

We really liked our food. Plenty of indoor seating with a few tables outside. Great beverages. Pretty slow service. Also there was a dog roaming around the restaurant which I felt was a bit gross for a restaurant

My husband and I were on our way to Volcano National Park and wanted to stop for a coffee and a quick on the go breakfast! We ordered the breakfast burrito and it was AMAZING! The pork was top notch. We both agreed that we don’t think we’ve ever had a better breakfast burrito! Definitely recommend for a quick bite and amazing vibes!

The owners here need to recognize their employee Leina who "rescued" what was a chaotic situation during breakfast. She was pleasant, remained calm and still had a smile. She should be considered for a managerial position. Food was good, coffee was good. Stock of coffee was barely there but it was bc a new location had recently opened. Leina said her commitment was to get restocked and have coffee back on the shelves. Good luck to the new location but we wanted to come here, the original location as we had visited before.

Excellent coffee and food and very friendly service! We came here three days in a row while staying nearby and had dine-in hot breakfast as well as takeout. The fresh catch benedict, breakfast burrito with pork, and banana & lilikoi muffins were highlights but everything we had was really good, as was the coffee (of course!). My partner loved the cinnamon roll latte and I had a great French press and cold brew. We also did the coffee mill tour on our last morning and it was interesting and included a coffee tasting of different roasts and preparations, I'm glad we were able to get that in.

We stopped by here one morning on the way to start a road trip. I would recommend this place because it is all local coffee from their coffee farm. Also, their prices are nice and they open the earliest. The lady at the counter was very nice and the coffee was good. The food looked bomb but we were too early for the kitchen.

Great Breakfast Stop on the Way to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach We stopped in around 9am on a Friday and were pleasantly surprised to find it not too busy. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was friendly and attentive. We shared the Florentine Benedicts with house potatoes — beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The flavors were fresh and well-balanced. We also tried the Biscuits and Gravy — the biscuits had a slight sweetness, which wasn’t quite my thing, but the gravy and sausage were excellent. Overall, it's a perfect spot to sit down, enjoy a quality breakfast, and sip on some good coffee before heading out to explore the island. Definitely recommend this as a solid breakfast stop!

Food: their coffee tasted great! I forgot to ask if they can make it less sweet so I’d say to me their original flavoring is on the sweet side. However their coffee is probably by far the best one that goes super well with milk ✨ we ended up buying some packs of their grounded coffee and beans. Service: it’s a small and hidden shop but the staff is warm and helpful. Ambiance: deserted retro style overall. Cozy and chill.

Found this place after passing our usual one (Coffee Shack) because it was too packed. This place has fresh food and coffee! We had the chicken wrap, two eggs any style, iced coffee (the one without coconut) and fresh OJ. I also ordered an expresso which was delicious. The service was OK, not too helpful or friendly, just order what you want and then they bring you the check. We didn't get any water or suggestions for food. Our server was neither welcoming nor rude, but the food was alright. The eggs were too light so it looked like they had been mixed with milk maybe? Or they just were not from healthy chickens? The chicken wrap was the star of the show. The wrap was fresh and the veggies were as well. My husband enjoyed it. The slaw was OK. The house fries were also OK. The overall experience was good and we would definitely return and try something else. They serve breakfast until noon and lunch all day until 3pm when they close. If you are not a breakfast person then this is a great spot. We will be back and update on the food when we do!
