Kona Gold Trading Company Kona Coffee and Rum Cakes
About
A Taste of Kona Tradition in Kealakekua
When you find yourself winding through the slopes of the Big Island, stopping at Kona Gold Trading Company feels less like a retail errand and more like stepping into a local kitchen. The air inside carries the heavy, inviting scent of freshly roasted coffee beans blended with the sweet, boozy aroma of premium aged rum.
Handcrafted Island Sweets
This spot is best known for its signature rum cakes. These dense, moist treats are soaked in authentic Hawaiian rum, striking a balance that isn't overly saccharine. They serve as the perfect companion to their single-origin Kona coffee, which provides a clean, bright finish that cuts through the richness of the cake. It is the ideal pit stop for travelers heading toward the coffee farms or those winding down after a morning of snorkeling in the nearby bay.
The Local Character
You will notice the atmosphere is unpretentious and focused entirely on quality. The staff here knows the nuances of the local harvest, happy to explain why the volcanic soil of the Kealakekua region produces such a distinct flavor profile. Be mindful that space inside is quite cozy; on busy afternoons, it can get a bit crowded as people jostle to grab their boxes of cakes to go. It is a genuine local experience—simple, fragrant, and deeply rooted in the agricultural heart of the Kona coast.

Hadn't had their Rum Cake in quite awhile. Bought one to share for a Thanksgiving dinner party and was horrified at how dry the top of the cake was and how wet and saturated the bottom. Seemed like the Rum was over-injected into the finished product. For $36 a small round, extremely disappointed. Used to buy them a lot when it was in Costco(years ago). Perhaps a recipe alteration? Or different owners? I don't know. Should have shot a video after opening the box. Video would've explained it better

Rum Cakes !!! They make them there in the shop. We were able to sample them. We got the "3 for $20" deal. I had to get the Lava Flow Coffee Cup for $20. It works great.

This is a fantastic place to stop and get a cup of coffee made from the coffee beans here in Kona. You should also sample the rum cakes while you are there. You can also get stuff shipped direct . Highly recommend .

We were walking up steps right at 3 pm. She put a note on door saying CLOSED, and got in car at front door. Website says open until 5 pm on Tuesday. (Not making the drive to that side of island again.) Was really looking forward to our visit! :-( There was someone in front of us, so she had customers coming in!

Rum cakes are amazing! Lilikoi and Espresso ones in particular. Coffee is so-so to our taste. You can order everything online including the cakes or you can ship it home right from the shop! Great!
