About
A Slice of Big Island Fermentation
Tucked away in the industrial pockets of Keaau, Wailuku Brew Works stands as a refreshingly unpretentious hub for those who value craft over flash. This isn't your typical polished taproom; it feels more like a dedicated workshop where the science of brewing takes center stage. The space is sparse and utilitarian, letting the scent of malt and yeast dominate the air rather than curated decor.
The Brews Behind the Bar
The operation is driven by a genuine passion for small-batch experimentation. Unlike larger commercial breweries on the Big Island, the focus here remains on evolving profiles. Locals often gather to track the progress of their latest seasonal ales, which frequently highlight tropical infusions that don't lean too heavily into sweetness. Expect crisp, clean finishes that contrast sharply with the humid, lush climate just outside the roll-up doors.
What to Expect on Your Visit
Plan your arrival carefully, as the parking area is compact and can fill up quickly during the weekend release events. It is a fantastic spot for people who enjoy a quiet conversation or a solo tasting session away from the crowded tourist zones of Hilo or Kona. The atmosphere is quiet, intimate, and stripped of gimmicks. Whether you are a long-time resident or passing through the East Hawaii region, this brewery serves as an authentic look at the local craft scene. If you prefer a loud, high-energy sports bar, this might feel too low-key, but for those seeking a sincere glass of local ale, it hits the mark perfectly.

I had an incredible experience at Wailuku Brew Works. We tried their blueberry sour, and it was absolutely amazing — one of the best I’ve ever had. I highly recommend stopping by and giving it a try. You won’t be disappointed! 🍻 …

Fantastic brewery, amazing beers, and super nice people! This was the best brewery I've visited in all of Hawaii, all the regulars and bartenders are so friendly. They also have 3 TVs to watch sports, I watched the NBA and NHL playoffs at the same time here!

Wailuku Brew Works is a great little brewery just outside Hilo. The taproom is small but welcoming, with a relaxed local vibe. They offer a wide range of beers, from crisp lagers and hoppy IPAs to rich stouts and creative sours. Everything we tried was solid and clearly made with care. There was only one staff member working, and she was very friendly and made us feel right at home. While there is no food, they do have pretzels, which was really the only good snack option. Still, the beer and the atmosphere made the visit more than worth it. If you are in the area, this place is definitely worth checking out.

Great place to grab some beers and hang out. The staff was friendly and the beer delicious. Run next door to grab some food as they allow outside food.

Fun fact this is not the Wailuku on Maui, this brewery is named after the Wailuku River. Had a wonderful time chatting with the owner on a Sunday afternoon. Their standards are good and they also have a barrel program which has some room for improvement, but is coming along. Where else can you find a barleywine in Hawaii. They also make their own ginger beer and their Dark and Stormy was delicious. My favorite beers were the barleywine and the tripel. I tasted 8 total. The tasting room is well appointed. I appreciate a comfy bar stool. The bathroom was nice and clean. They also have food trucks or food daily. This day they had Uncle Bob's smoked ribs, with truffle mac and cheese, and a cornbread muffin. Probably the best ribs I have ever had. They were seasoned so well | didn't even need sauce. Next time you are in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in. They also have a crowler machine for to go.

A great little hole in the wall brewery serving amazing brews. For a small brewery, they had an unbelievable selection of some very complex beers. We ordered food from the plate lunch place next door.

The beer is very good. Their barrel-aging is spot-on. Met one of the owners and was given a private tour of the brewhaus and their new upstairs event center. Great addition to the Hilo side of the island. Did not try the food but looked promising.

Fantastic brewery! Had a flight which included a barrel aged tart cherry barleywine which I never would have considered before but it sounded good. It was outstanding! As were the other 3 beers in the flight. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and wanted to talk beer especially after they decided that I knew a thing or two. I HIGHLY recommend this brewery.

The best brewery in the Hawaiian islands... not just the big island... all of them. The beer was incredible and the service was extremely friendly and helpful. We had over three flights of beer and every single beer was quality and flavorful. It's places like this that will have us travel back to the Hawaiian islands.
