About
A Puna Tradition
In the heart of the Orchidland Estates, Kaleo's stands as a reliable pillar for locals craving hearty, island-style comfort food. This isn't a place for white tablecloths; it is where the community gathers for generous portions that satisfy after a long day of navigating the lush, winding roads of the Puna district. The air inside is often filled with the savory aroma of house-made kalua pork and the rhythmic chatter of regulars catching up over iced tea.
Island Favorites and Local Comfort
The kitchen leans heavily into traditional Hawaiian plates. Their signature lau lau is a standout, wrapped in steaming ti leaves that release a earthy, fragrant scent the moment you pull the parcel open. Chef Kaleo balances the menu with classic burgers and fresh catches, ensuring there is something for everyone from the hungry traveler to the daily commuter. The plating is straightforward and unpretentious, prioritizing substance and local sourcing over elaborate flourishes.
Practical Island Dining
The space carries an open-air, casual energy that feels distinctly Keaau. While the service is warm and authentically friendly, keep in mind that the parking lot can get a bit tight during peak lunch hours, so arrive with a bit of patience. It’s the perfect pit stop if you are heading toward the Hilo side or returning from the Volcano area. Whether you are looking for a quick, filling breakfast to start a rainforest hike or a relaxed dinner in a low-key setting, this spot offers a genuine taste of Puna life without any unnecessary frills.

Kaleo’s has a major problem with consistency. One night they’re good, the next night they are terrible. Example: For our most recent visit, we ordered the bacon-avocado burger (DaKine), and asked that it NOT be over-salted like they sometimes do. What we received was an overcooked (well-done) burger that was somewhat burnt, and had NO avocado at all. Our server informed us after the fact, that they were out of avocados. Additionally, the salad it came with, was drowning in dressing (heavily overdressed). Also, the Ono fish we ordered came on a bed of dry rice, when we didn’t ask for rice. At least give people the option to substitute the rice for more veggies. On the flip side… the Ono fish was great, as was the veggies, as was the pulled-pork! So it really comes down to an issue in CONSISTENCY (quality-control of food and service). If the restaurant is out of one of the main ingredients on a dish, they should let people know that item is temporarily unavailable, ahead of time. Additionally, they should let guests know what comes with the dish, and give them options. And finally, there is no need to overcook or over-salt beef, if the beef is of good quality. Conclusion: Some of their food is really good, but there is no way to tell what will be good on a particular night, and what night is amateur-night. When combined with servers who don’t ask how you want things prepared, don’t give you options on the side dishes, and don’t inform you when they’re out of something… it creates an unreliable dining experience.

Ate here twice. Both times the staff was very friendly and helpful. Service is very quick, food was great, and all the employees seem to be happy. I noticed the manager on our first visit, he definitely leads by example. Delivering menus, water, and helped bus tables. I highly recommend that you take at least one meal here. I bet you come back! Visited the branch on Orchid Land Drive.

Loved the exposed eating experience. On a rainy evening, the temps were perfect to sit in this covered but open establishment. I got the special mozzarella cheese for an app. Others got crispy pork belly and spring rolls. All were very happy. My entree was the blackened ahi with pineapple salsa. That was very good! Again, all seemed pretty happy with their food. Service was quick and attentive. Great spot to dine in Keaau!

I feel incredibly lucky to have Kaleo's Bar and Grill right here in Orchidland! This place has become my go-to spot, and for good reason. The atmosphere is perfect with both indoor and outdoor seating options. I can choose my vibe depending on the day. Whether I want to enjoy the beautiful Hawaii weather outside or relax in the comfortable indoor space, they've got me covered. Now let's talk about the food – it's consistently outstanding! Their coffee is excellent (perfect for starting the day), and the New York Steaks are cooked to perfection. The Brie Salad is a delightful combination of flavors (I like to add shrimp), and their burgers are absolutely delicious. Everything I've tried has been amazing and the portions are generous. It's such a treat to have a quality restaurant like this so close to my neighborhood. The whole experience – from the ambiance to the food – makes Kaleo's a place I keep coming back to. Highly recommend to locals and visitors alike!

We had such a wonderful experience at Kaleo’s Bar & Grill! Our server, Pulelehua K, went above and beyond to make our visit memorable. She came to our table with such a warm, shining light personality that immediately made us feel comfortable and welcomed. One of our guests needed gluten-free options, and Pulelehua was incredibly helpful—she guided us through the choices and even brought out their separate gluten-free menu, which made things so easy and stress-free. The food itself was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Combined with the outstanding service and welcoming atmosphere, Kaleo’s is definitely a spot we’ll be coming back to. Mahalo to Pulelehua and the whole team for making our evening so special! 🌺
