The Kea'au Deli
About
A Taste of Puna Tradition
If you find yourself navigating the winding roads of East Hawaii, The Kea'au Deli stands as a dependable anchor for locals and visitors alike. Far from the polished sheen of tourist-centric resorts, this spot captures the unpretentious spirit of Kea'au. The air inside often carries the sharp, savory scent of house-made roast beef and fresh-baked bread, a combination that hits just right after a morning spent exploring nearby rainforests or lava fields.
The Menu Philosophy
This is where hearty, grab-and-go convenience meets island-style generosity. While the menu leans into the classics—think stacked deli sandwiches overflowing with high-quality cuts—it is the local touch that defines the experience. Patrons frequently stop by for their signature subs, which are built to survive the drive to Volcano or the trek back toward Hilo. The portions are substantial enough to fuel a full day of island adventuring, and the staff operates with the kind of efficiency that regulars appreciate during the mid-day rush.
The Deli Experience
Stepping inside, you are met with the hum of a busy counter and the clatter of knives against cutting boards. It is a no-frills environment; the decor is minimal, and the focus is entirely on the food. One minor quirk to keep in mind is that the space is compact, and the small parking area can get backed up when the lunchtime crowd arrives, so plan your stop accordingly. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch before heading deep into the Puna District or stocking up for a weekend coastal drive, the deli delivers a genuine, consistent bite that feels like a staple of the community.

Five is just not enough stars to rate this amazing little gem of a deli! I guess I could best describe it as a "gourmet grab-n-go." You can get high quality sandwiches and baked goods that are made from wholesome ingredients with the same convenience as fast food. They also offer all of your favorite coffee and espresso beverages that are made with 100% Kona coffee and they even make their own flavor syrups. And yes! They also sell their own gelato that looks absolutely delicious! My experience: I was warmly greeted by a lovely young lady named Allie. She and a sweet young man were really hustling to get everyone's orders filled but they never stopped smiling and were happy to talk story with me while they worked. I got a Lavender Cappuccino that had an amazing zing of spice that perfectly complimented the rich boldness of the Kona espresso. Wow! Starbucks couldn't even hold a candle to this! I also got one of my all time faves: the butter croissant. This type of pastry is high on the difficulty scale to prepare correctly, but these folks nailed it! Rich and buttery, lightly sweet taste with such a delicate and flaky texture. Mmm! Definitely a "piece de resistance!" Obviously, I can't recommend this little deli enough. It definitely has all the vibes. I can't wait to return for a sandwich and some of that beautiful looking gelato!

Take out only. The sandwiches are very good and worth the price. Which wasn't bad at all. Goodies were from Big Island Bakehouse!

It was such a wonderful experience and definitely our best breakfast on the island. Fresh bread, delicious sandwiches, and great coffee. We paid $38 including tips for two lattes ($7.50 each) and two sandwiches. The price is very reasonable, and the food is absolutely delicious. Highly recommend visiting! 🌴✨

This feels like the only genuinely good café around the area. The staff were incredibly friendly, coffee was good , and the sandwiches were solid. A perfect stop to grab some hot sandwiches after a long drive. Highly recommend the egg pesto sandwich !

Finally stopped at this cute little deli and man, great quality sandwiches for $10! There was a short line and you order at the counter to go. Nice selection of rotating sandwiches, some creative side dishes, an amazing gelato/sorbet collection, good looking desserts and fun coffee options. Service is efficient. Chicken pesto was too oily for me, shredded pork and blue cheese was delicious, but we didn't like the French onion soup. Too much balsamic, no cheese and untoasted bread. We'll be back to try more.

I had the roast beef sandwich with the au jus and it was so tasty!! I also had the pumpkin muffin with cream cheese frosting and it was very delicious 😋🤤 I would have loved to try the gelato because they make it themselves but I already had enough sugar 😁 for sure next time!

Impressive little shop. Every time I visit they have different sandwiches to offer on the menu. Same with the Gelato. There's a great variety to choose from. While they do offer chocolate for people who want to stay safe 😉 They also have unique flavors & sandwiches that I've never had before. So far I've enjoyed everything I've tried. The staff is super sweet & now acknowledges me by name. This shop is exactly what was needed in Keaau & I plan to stop in & try something new wherever I'm in the area. 🍦 🍨 🥪 ❤️ 💙 💜.
