A Neighborhood Gem in the Heart of Keaau

When you find yourself cruising through the Big Island’s Puna district, Peppercorn stands out as a reliable stop for those craving hearty, local-style comfort food. This isn't a place for white tablecloths; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense eatery that thrives on satisfying the appetites of locals and travelers passing through the Keaau area.

The Flavor Profile

The kitchen focuses on delivering generous portions that hit the spot after a long day of exploring the nearby Volcano region. Expect the air to be thick with the savory scent of sizzling proteins and the familiar hum of a busy lunch rush. Their menu leans into island favorites, featuring well-executed plate lunches and savory bites that highlight regional tastes. Whether it is a quick lunch break or a casual dinner, the food is consistently hot and comes out fast.

The Keaau Experience

The atmosphere is bustling and unpretentious. You will likely hear the clatter of kitchen pans and the lively chatter of residents catching up over a meal. Be aware that during peak hours, the small parking area can become a bit of a puzzle to navigate, so patient maneuvering is part of the local ritual here. It is the perfect spot for anyone looking to ditch the tourist traps and enjoy an authentic, grab-and-go or dine-in experience that feels uniquely woven into the fabric of the Puna community.

Didn’t even get to the point of getting my order along with my family. Our order was this: garlic udon noodle, some Tom Kha and orange curry I believe. The lady taking our order had no idea what was on the menu upon me asking which generally is not an issue with me but it was her ATTITUDE! She did not come to us for 15 mins and everything I asked was like I was a bother or something that I should have already known despite it being our first time dining there. “How much shrimp does the salt pepper shrimp come with if you don’t mind me asking“ “I don’t know it comes with some” “I don’t know the portions “ Um…okay I don’t know if she’s the owner or what it’s fine maybe she’s having a bad day thats okay too I get that! I ask her if her drinks have refills because they’re 3$. Her response rattled my energy because she rolled her eyes and said “what are you talking about they’re cans” LIKE HELLO ITS MY FIRST TIME HERE I DIDNT KNOW THAT!!! She rushed my order and kept slamming her notepad it was just not a welcoming experience I won’t be going back. The place is gorgeous though! Just needs a little work on her interactions with people for sure. I will chalk it up to her just being overwhelmed with orders and took it out on us.

Not sure why this has any good ratings at all. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile. My friends did some work at my house so we treated them to dinner. We placed an order to go for 5 people. Everyone agreed that ALL the food was bland and flavorless. Do they even use salt? NONE of it was spicy, not even the menu items that had a pepper picture next to it. Green Curry with beef - this is the only thing I liked. It was just okay though. There are much better Thai restaurants close by. The eggplant was good. The beef was mushy like dog food. There was not enough curry inside for the price. My friend said this dish was terrible. Tasted like black pepper, no coconut flavor. Minced Ginger Beef Fried Rice - Bland. No flavor at all. Was there even salt or ginger in there? I got no flavor of anything except rice. Pad Thai was just average. We had a few other dishes but I don't eat chicken so I didn't try them. The popular opinion at the table is that none of us would order from here again. Not sure if they even do different spice levels? Because the lady taking orders didn't seem to care.

Went on a Sunday around 1130/1200pm. First customers to be seated. *Clean dining area. *We were allowed to pick our table. *Sat on a four top between to partitions.(booth like) * Water service for 3. * Server delivered chopsticks, forks with napkins and a plate. * offered additional drinks, which we were fine with water. Refilled glasses quickly n efficiently. * Food was hot and fresh to order. *Good amount for family style dining.( one order each) Dishes ordered was tasty and not salt or overly sauced! Just right! Thank you.

First time there so I ordered the chicken fried rice and the vege spring rolls- best fried rice I have had since I have lived here 23 years. Very good and done well. My wife had the crispy noodles. Very nice and the broth was really good!

Warm service and quick seating. The hostess/waitress seemed to have perfect timing with tending to our needs throughout the dining experience. We ordered the Mongolian beef, which was the best I have ever had - they make it super tender when I usually find it a bit too tough at other restaurants even when I like the flavor. The shrimp pad Thai was top notch as well, and the salt and pepper ribs were bussin frfr. I also got the hot Vietnamese coffee which was really cool because it is finished being made on the table and it layers perfectly over the milk. I have never seen the ingredients separated like that before. And the basil tofu eggplant was fire as well, I am not usually the biggest fan of eggplant but it was not too soggy and great flavor sauce. Worth a trip even from Kona to eat here.

We love Peppercorn Spice House!! It is one of the gems of Kea’au/Puna, hidden behind the gas station and McDonalds. They always have great customer service, quick service and excellent food! We visit 2-3 times per month— usually after a long day cooking/serving others at our own business and don’t wanna go home to cook for ourselves. 😂🤣 Our faves are: 1- Crispy Orange Beef (you can request Chicken instead). 2- Green Papaya Salad w/ Shrimp 3- Salt & Pepper Calamari - Hands Down the BEST Calamari I have ever eaten! Perfectly Salty & nicely seasoned with Szechuan Peppercorn. In general I am a sauce lover and claim “Everything tastes better with sauce!” but I feel their S&P Calamari shines it’s brightest without the sauce. I love the pure unadulterated flavor on its own. Our server is usually Beatrice, who is originally from Tanzania, so I enjoy practicing my minimal Swahili skills with her. She is patient, kind and encouraging, always replying in Swahili, then telling me what she said. 🥰 The owners are very nice and polite also. I could be wrong, but I believe they were the previous owners of the Lemongrass restaurant in Kea’au years ago (but that’s under new ownership). Great job Peppercorn Spice House!! We appreciate you guys pampering us after our own long day serving others. 🥰💜

Finally checked out this great little restaurant in Keaau. It is rare that I exceptionally like every dish on the table but they knocked it out of the park. The salt and pepper calamari, massaman Curry chicken, pork egg rolls, crispy pork ribs, seafood pineapple fried rice were all delicious. Good service and good prices. We will definitely be back

Pleasant staff. Delicious food! Reasonable prices for very generous portions. Also a clean dining room. I loved my mixed vegetables with rice - Lovely light sauce. And the Crab Rangoon were scrumptious- Crispy, full of flavor and not at all greasy. My husband also enjoyed his Pad Thai. Looking forward to going back to this hidden gem.

We ate lunch here on a Monday afternoon in March 2025. The restaurant was quiet and very clean. The staff was very efficient and quick. My wife and I both ordered off of the lunch menu which had a smaller entree but included a salad and soup. She got the lemongrass chicken and I ordered the Mongolian beef. The beef was very tender and the vegetables were crisp. I absolutely loved this dish. The lemongrass chicken had good flavor but the chicken was not as tender as I would have liked. I also wished the spice level was higher but my wife was very happy with the amount of spice her dish contained. It can be hard to satisfy everyone! We are looking forward to eating here again.
