Ma'ona Lunch Counter
About
A Taste of Old Hawaii in Keaau Village
When you find yourself navigating the winding roads of the Big Island, stopping in Keaau for a meal at Ma'ona Lunch Counter feels like stepping into a local secret. This isn’t a place for fine dining or white tablecloths; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense spot where the portions are as generous as the hospitality. You’ll hear the sizzle of the flat-top grill before you even reach the counter, and the scent of seasoned meats hangs heavy in the humid air.
What to Expect on Your Plate
The kitchen leans hard into Hawaiian comfort food. The plate lunches are the definition of 'ma'ona'—which translates to being full or satisfied. Their signature mochiko chicken is a standout, boasting a crispy, slightly sweet batter that cracks satisfyingly with every bite. The mac salad is textbook perfect: creamy, chilled, and tangy enough to cut through the richness of the main proteins. It is the kind of fuel that powers a long day of exploring Puna’s rugged coastline or trekking through the nearby rainforests.
Know Before You Go
The experience is quintessentially rustic. Seating is sparse, and during the midday rush, the hum of hungry locals waiting for their takeout orders can get quite lively. If you are a visitor, don’t be surprised if the pace feels a bit slower than what you are used to—that is just the rhythm of life in this part of Hawaii Island. Parking can get a little tight right out front as the lunch crowd swells, so it pays to be patient. It’s the perfect pit stop for anyone craving an authentic, unpretentious meal that prioritizes heartiness over flair.

We were next door at the brewery and they recommended the lunch counter. We weren't disappointed! You know it is going to be good when the locals are lining up to order! Next time I'm on the island, I'll be making another trip to this restaurant.

We accidentally found this place when we were drinking beer next door at Waikulu brewing. Although it is very small place, the food is EXCELLENT!! They had a great selection of various plates. Enjoy small businesses.

So simple and so satisfying. These guys know ball. My friend and I got Korean Chicken and Furukake Ono, we split and both were amazing, perfect portions and good prices, drink prices and also unbeatable. Easily one of the best places to get lunch on the island.

I ordered the Grilled Ono Sandwich and opted for coleslaw as the side. Everything about the sandwich was good except that it wasn't served with any kind of tartar sauce, mayo or lemon. So although it was flavorful, it was dry. The slaw was plentiful and tasty. Service was fast and friendly. Too bad about the sandwich, it would have rated 5 stars if it had come with some kind of sauce.

No place to sit. Ulu fries are so amazing. Great burgers. Plus local tortilla and salsa company make products here and sell them. I love the tortillas because they are thin and tasty.

I’ve been a customer for years and just really felt disappointed my last visit. You now have to pay for fries for your burger (onion rings or slaw included). Our fries were so over cooked it was a greasy crunchy shell, my kids spit it out. Small portion. Onion rings were sparse and mostly skin pieces. I will still try again but not sure why fries cost money now and not onion rings. And to charge for inedible fries is a major disappointment. Burgers were still on point, which is why I will come again.

The Viking 62 here was, hands down, the best burger I've ever head. The meat was flavorful and done-to-order, the sauce was rich and creamy without being overwhelming, the cheese and bacon added additional textures and flavors...this burger was incredible and I'm not even big on beef! The fries were fresh and piping hot. The blackened ono was also really good. Seared and spiced with complex flavors and the most flavorful and complementary tartar sauce I've ever tried. I'll be back here in a heartbeat. :D

Remember: cash only. Great and simple lunch spot. Nice service, clean space, and plate/sauce containers are truly all fiber (100% compostable!) As long as you bring your utensils, you're pretty waste free!! Low waste food establishments, I love! They also most likely have the best burger on the island. Definitely the top patties we've had; juicy, meaty, large, and local. Comes with toppings, sauces on the side (must request), and fries. We started with the simple cheeseburger, but I definitely plan to return for their specialties soon.
