Countryside Cafe (16-586 Old Volcano Rd)
About
A Morning Staple in Keaau Village
Stepping into Countryside Cafe, you are immediately greeted by the low hum of conversation and the rich, dark aroma of local Kona coffee. Located right in the heart of Keaau, this spot serves as a true community hub where the pace of life slows down to match the sleepy charm of the Puna district.
Island Comfort on a Plate
The menu leans heavily into local comfort favorites, featuring hearty breakfast plates that keep farmers and residents fueled throughout the day. You will find massive servings of loco moco, where the savory brown gravy ties together perfectly seared patties and rice. Their Portuguese sausage breakfast is another standout, offering that familiar snap and spice that defines traditional Hawaiian morning meals. Everything is prepared with a no-frills, honest approach that prioritizes satiety and flavor over pretense.
The Puna Vibe
The interior is straightforward and functional, reflecting the hardworking spirit of the surrounding Big Island countryside. You might find that the dining room gets a bit noisy during the mid-morning rush, or that finding a parking spot requires a little patience as locals pull in for their daily caffeine fix. It is the kind of place where you come to catch up on town news or simply enjoy a quiet meal before heading up the highway toward Volcano. If you are exploring the east side of the island and want a genuine look at how residents start their day, this cafe provides an authentic window into Keaau life.

Countryside Cafe in Kea'au is hands down the best place to get brunch on the east side of the island! I keep coming back because everything about this place is just right. The location is incredibly convenient, situated right by Foodland, Ace Hardware, the laundromat, and Supercuts. It's the perfect one-stop-shop setup where you can grab a delicious meal and knock out your errands all in one trip. The cafe itself offers really nice indoor and outdoor seating options, so you can enjoy your meal in a comfortable setting no matter what kind of atmosphere you're in the mood for. Speaking of the food, their steak and eggs with a cup of coffee is absolutely fantastic. The portions are generous, and everything is consistently delicious. What really sets Countryside Cafe apart is the service. The staff is always quick and friendly.

Early on a Sunday morning, we were greeted with big smiles and friendly vibes. Was pleasantly surprised they had a DJ playing nice local tunes. A lovely young lady was there to take our orders immediately, and our food was perfectly cooked and served in just minutes. I had the Banana Foster French Toast, which was to die for! My friends had bacon, eggs, and potatoes that were also very good. I can't recommend this place for breakfast enough! Food, service, and atmosphere are all totally on point!

Food was amazing. Staff was very friendly. It has your typical breakfast options, but has fun Asian options. I got the egg scramble and a side of fried noodles. The noodles were incredible.

Nice place for breakfast. Tried the Walk Thru the Country. The strawberry waffles were so tasty. Nice place to sit outside.

We really enjoyed our meal here. It felt like a very local place, yet they accepted us as visitors with warmth and much hospitality. I can heartily recommend the pork adobo eggs benedict, though the Hollandaise sauce could use a lot more of lemon to suit my taste ๐ It was a great place for brunch, and we got some great advice for activities on our trip.

The food was okay. The lilkoi biscuits were wonderful. I had Da Breakfast Plate. The coffee was really good, but I do wish they had half and half, instead of non-dairy creamer. Service was relatively quick and the server was really nice. It was little expensive for what it was, but then everything seems to be expensive nowadays.

Service and Food were both fantastic. Local honey AND coffee. Even if your order does not include it, order the lilikoi biscuits, they are awesome. Staff was friendly and helpful. Will definitely return.

07.14.24 - this was our first visit. We will definitely be back. We need to try the other dishes. We had the Country fried steak and eggs, corned beef Hash moco! The best bc itโs real corned beef. Fresh made in house! And the sweet sampler of pancake, bananas foster French toast, & waffle with strawberries. The French toast and the waffle were our faves. The best part was our waitress separated our sweet sampler bc we let her know we just wanted to try it and would be taking the rest home. We said you could just bring it out in the to go box, but she went above and beyond and made two plates 1/2 for dine in & 1/2 for take out. ๐ very sweet.

Waitress was good, like amazingly nice and a wonderful person to talk to. Food portions were small. A side of potatoes was little tiny bowl of overcooked spuds. Overall quality was mediocre. Prices were okay for the island, but overall we weren't impressed.
