Yen's Cafe
About
A Morning Ritual in Hilo
Stepping into Yen's Cafe feels like walking into a friend’s kitchen in the heart of downtown Hilo. This isn't a place for white tablecloths or complex culinary experimentation; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense diner where the smell of sizzling breakfast meats greets you the moment you push open the door. The clinking of porcelain against formica tabletops and the low hum of local conversation create a backdrop that defines the unhurried pace of the Big Island.
The Flavors of the Neighborhood
Known for their approachable, hearty breakfast plates, the kitchen focuses on comfort food that keeps the local Hilo workforce fueled. You will find classic island-style breakfast staples here, with generous portions of rice and protein that lean into traditional Hawaiian plate lunch culture. The coffee is perpetually hot and poured with a heavy hand, perfect for those damp mornings when the Hilo mist refuses to lift.
What to Expect
The space is functional and modest. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble if you arrive during the peak weekend morning rush, as seating can fill up fast among regulars who have been coming here for years. It’s the kind of spot where the servers likely know your order if you visit more than once. If you are looking for a place to sit back, watch the world go by, and enjoy a reliable meal without any pretense, this corner of the island serves exactly what you need.

This is a nice little cozy place that serves really tasty and hot meals. We had a few dietary requirements and the server listened to all of them patiently and provided us with options. The food was really tasty, glad we made it there for dinner. Will definitely return if we are in the area again. Highly recommended!

I loved the Pho Tai I ordered. I added extra tai and made it spicy. I skipped bean sprouts but if you choose it comes with them also. Good spice to it, but not overpowering. The Thai tea was one of the best I've had. Strong flavor.

My husband and I have been enjoying Tongs cooking since they opened in 2005. Yen’s is our go to spot and I can recommend every dish on the menu. My favorite dish is the cold vermicelli salad with spring rolls and chicken.

Just stopped by to order a quick lunch and was so pleasantly surprised with our food. Chicken ginger lemongrass plate and spicy chicken rice plate. Both came with a very tasty side salad. So much flavor for lunch. I also order a fresh sugar cane. Will definitely be back to try the Pho.

Great food near 9 miles from Honomu. We knew we won't get food in Honomu so stopped here on our way from Hilo. The place had fantastic Chicken curry which is probably the best Asian curry I have had. My partner had fried rice which was good too. Thai iced tea was nice too but needed more sugar :p

We ordered our standard Vietnamese dishes, Bun ga and vegetarian fried rice, and found them very good, but not quite excellent. The chicken was nicely seasoned, but I missed the little fried onions many Vietnamese restaurants add. The fried rice needed a little more egg. The tables and chairs were clean. The restaurant is small with 4(?) tables, and they do quite a bit of carry-out business. I assume it's a family affair with mom and/or dad in the kitchen, big sister workin' her buns off waitressing, and little brother spacing out with his iPad at the register. We left big sister a good tip, but she probably had to share it with family. We would go back again if we lived in the area.

Amazing. We didn't order a single bad dish, and the boba tea was probably some of the best I've ever had. I loved that when a dish was labeled spicy, it actually came out spicy! 🙌🏽 …

The cold noodles (with grilled beef and spring rolls) are amazing! The Pho is good, but not the best. The meatballs in the Pho are delicious! There's a lot of meat in the beef combo also. I would come here again.
