About
Pacific Flavors Overlooking Hilo Bay
Perched right along the water's edge, Hilo Bay Cafe offers a masterclass in pairing island-sourced ingredients with a contemporary culinary perspective. As you step inside, the immediate draw is the expansive view of the bay; the sight of the water meeting the lush coastline provides a backdrop that changes subtly as the sun shifts over the Big Island.
A Menu Rooted in Local Soil and Sea
The kitchen, led by a focus on hyper-local purveyors, excels at elevating regional staples. Their ahi poke bowl is a standout, often featuring fish pulled from local waters just hours before hitting the plate. You will find the menu leans heavily into Hilo’s agricultural bounty, with vegetable preparations that treat island-grown greens with the same reverence as their seafood selections. If you are here for dinner, the seared scallops and locally sourced beef remain consistent favorites among those who appreciate refined preparation without the pretense of white-tablecloth formality.
The Atmosphere of Hilo’s Waterfront
The dining room maintains an airy, open feel that lets the sound of the nearby Pacific serve as the acoustic centerpiece. It is a space designed for those looking to linger over a craft cocktail while watching the clouds roll over the distant volcano peaks. Be prepared for a lively, sometimes energetic hum during the prime dinner rush; it is a popular spot for both local celebrations and travelers seeking a genuine taste of Hilo dining.
A minor quirk for visitors to note: the parking lot can get remarkably snug during peak evening hours, so give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate the spaces. Once you have secured your spot, the experience is defined by the blend of high-end culinary technique and the laid-back, welcoming spirit of East Hawaii. It is an essential stop for anyone wanting to see how Hilo is redefining its own local food scene.

Nice restaurant by the ocean with a pretty view. Sushi was excellent. Philly sandwich was a little dry but nice crunchy bun and good flavor. Maria was a great waitress

Glad we had a reservation other people were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Shared two rolls and a fish and chips. The fish was Ono which I haven't had before. It was excellent. The Paradise roll was also very good. Small place, great food and good service. Highly recommend.

Really wonderful experience from our greeting by Aaron at the door to the service at the table by Cayenne. The food, "house" by the glass wine selections were top notch. My husband went for the French onion short ribs & I went for the Hawaiian poke with a medium spice and the crispy salmon roll with a lemon aoli. Yum! We will be thinking about the flavors of this meal and the excellent service for years to come.

Fabulous place for dining. A very different menu. Reservations are helpful. We shared a poke appetizer (photo), and shared an insanely delicious main course, duck, duck Demi (photo). Our table was in the outdoor lanai. It was raining, but we were adequately covered. The view of Hilo Bay, (photo), is stunning. I can’t say enough about our server, Isabelle. She was very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and how the dishes were prepared, and when we asked about recommendations for things to do in Hilo, gave us many suggestions. A must go to place when in Hilo.

Great location with a view of the bay, fabulous food, and hospitable staff. Had a wonderful experience! Big thanks to Sierra for accommodating us before our reservation time and for managing to get us outside too! And also big thanks to Alexandra who was warm, professional, knowledgeable, and offered lovely suggestions.

Best place we ate on the Big Island. The restaurant looks new and modern. We needed a place to cool down and relax from a day of hiking and exploring and we found the perfect place. My favorite dish was the mushroom pot pie. The shrimp yakisoba noodles was a bit much and might be more popular for locals because it’s huge.

The food was cold, the catch of the day was mahi-mahi I ordered it along a side of stirfry vegetables. It came on a small 5” x 3“ plate. The presentation was bad and fish was not good. The risotto was under cooked, definitely not experience we expected. We came here a few years ago and was amazing, but this time the visit was definitely not good at all. Does not live up to its price either. Was under whelming.

Wish I knew about this restaurant sooner. I've eaten all around Hilo and this is certainly one of the very best places I've enjoyed. Starting with the hostess who was friendly and polite, our server Cayenne promptly arrived and she patiently detailed the mouthwatering selections on the menu. I see why she loves her work because literally everything was perfect. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was exceptional and the view from the balcony was spectacular. The portions were large, the appetizers were awesome, even the deserts were outstanding. I rarely give such a high recommendation, but this place is exceptional. Best to make reservations due to the popularity. Be prepared to climb the stairs to the second floor, or there's an elevator in the back. Thank you Cayenne for making it such a great experience. I will definitely return.

The place is nice with a pleasant atmosphere. The food is good, but not amazing. Overall, it’s a decent spot for a relaxed meal by the bay.

The view of the bay from the outside seating is priceless. The service was good. The decor is upscale. The food was flavorful. I can only image the night views from the restaurant spectacular. The views and location are worth the price.
