The vibe is humble, welcoming, and perpetually filled with the intoxicating aroma of toasted grains and warm sugar. Whether you are a local picking up your daily loaf or a visitor seeking an authentic taste of Hilo, you will find a warm reception and a commitment to quality that is increasingly rare in modern bakeries.
Menu Highlights & Must-Try Dishes
At Papa'a Palaoa, everything is baked daily with meticulous care, but there are a few standouts that have earned a legendary status among regulars:
- Cardamom Baked Goods: Whether it's their signature cardamom muffin or a rotating seasonal treat, these are a cult favorite. Guests rave about the aromatic, perfectly spiced pockets that make every bite memorable.
- Lilikoi Pie: This is a true Hawaiian masterpiece. The tart, bright sweetness of local passion fruit paired with a buttery, flaky crust makes this a sought-after treat—so popular that locals often pack them to-go for travel.
- Cinnamon Swirl & Rolls: These are the ultimate comfort food. Soft, pillowy, and generously glazed, they are the perfect accompaniment to a morning cup of coffee while exploring Hilo town.
- Roasted Three Seed Bread: A staple for a reason. This hearty, nutritious loaf showcases the bakery's dedication to craft and makes for the perfect base for their house-made chicken or egg salad sandwiches.
Insider Dining & Tips
Papa'a Palaoa is a high-demand spot, especially in the mornings. To ensure you snag your favorite items, aim for an early arrival before the mid-morning rush clears the shelves. Because the bakery prides itself on "fresh daily" batches, once an item sells out, it’s gone until the next morning. If you are planning to take a lilikoi pie on a flight home, don't be shy about asking the staff—they are incredibly helpful with packaging and preservation tips to ensure your treat survives the journey intact.
Location & Parking
Located at 187 Kilauea Ave in the heart of Hilo, the bakery is perfectly situated for those strolling through the historic downtown area. Parking in Hilo can be tricky; while there is limited street parking available directly in front of the bakery, be prepared to walk a short block or two if the area is busy. It is conveniently located near various local Hilo boutiques and landmarks, making it an ideal stop for a mid-morning snack as you explore the town’s rich architecture and local culture.

Cardamom- So Good!
We were in Hilo last year and remembered this bakery and the cardamom bun we had. We came this year looking for that bun and they didn't have it, however, they had a cardamom muffin. It was so good. I can't figure out how they get the little cardamom clumps in the muffin but they are delicious. If you like cardamom get one of their cardamom baked goods. You will be thinking about it for years.

Aloha lives at Papa'a Palaoa Bakery
Mahalo nui au i nā wāhine o ka Papa'a Palaoa Bakery ma Hilo, Hawai'i. They assisted me in providing a whole lilikoi pie to bring home to San Francisco. They fully wrapped the box in plastic to keep the pie protected, so I could then place it in an insulated bag and surround the box with frozen ice packs. The pie (as well as a cinnamon roll) made it back home just as "hou" (fresh) as when I purchased it, me ka pilikia ole (with no problems), and the pie tastes 'ono loa. I am very grateful for their assistance, and especially their kindness. I highly recommend this bakery to everyone who wants fresh baked goods, but most of all, I am very grateful to the Aloha given by their employees. Mahalo nui loa!!

Blueberry lemon muffin
The melt-in-mouth, choke-berries muffin disappeared before I could take a photo, sparing half the cinnamon roll/loaf!! Soooo ono.
