Pineapple's Island Fresh Cuisine
About
A Taste of Hilo Hospitality
Situated in the heart of Hilo, Pineapple's Island Fresh Cuisine captures the essence of Big Island dining. The open-air architecture invites the gentle, humid trade winds inside, creating a laid-back setting where the sound of bustling conversation blends with the occasional clatter of flatware. It is the kind of place where locals head for a relaxed lunch or a spirited dinner before strolling through the surrounding historic district.
Island-Grown Ingredients on the Plate
The menu highlights the region's agricultural bounty, with a heavy emphasis on farm-to-table practices. Guests frequently gravitate toward the fresh catch of the day, often prepared with macadamia nut crusts that provide a satisfying crunch against the tender, flaky fish. Their signature pineapple-infused cocktails and tropical appetizers offer a bright, acidic counterpoint to the richer, savory entrées. Every plate feels deliberate, emphasizing the colors and textures of Hawaii’s unique produce.
The Hilo Dining Experience
Expect a lively environment that can get quite loud during peak dinner hours. While the service remains efficient and friendly, the popularity of the space means that snagging a parking spot in the immediate vicinity often requires a bit of patience—a small price to pay for such a central location. Whether you are craving a hearty serving of kalua pork or a crisp salad featuring greens plucked from nearby Volcano-area farms, the kitchen delivers consistent, authentic flavors. This is an ideal stop for visitors looking to ground their culinary journey in true Hilo character, surrounded by the warmth of community-focused service.

The food is very mid. Only good ones are the fried shrimp, the kalbi and the other beaf ( Japanese style) Everything is basically fried. The scallops, daily catch, all fried. Also very salty. The drinks are also very mid. There is a waiting line.

We came tonight to celebrate my hubby's birthday here in Hilo. Pineapples was perfect in every way! Starting with the Pineapples 🍍 Pineapple Mojito for the birthday boy! And an Amazing unheard of "Cocktail" flight!!! I chose the Hawaiin MaI Tai flight... Pineapple, Guava, Mango and Coconut. What an incredible treat!!! We then shared the New Zealand Coconut Ginger Mussels entree which was a truly unique flavor explosion. The broth also included lemongrass, mushrooms and tomatoes. DELICIOUS!! We were thrilled that Chocolate Lava Cake was the special dessert offering for tonight... such an appropriate end to our adventures at Volcanos National Park earlier in the day. The service was great and Brittany was super friendly. She helped us with info on local establishments for our needs before we leave tomorrow. I highly recommend a visit to Pineapples. Do call ahead because the locals know where to go, and Pineapples is the place!!!

Great setting! Super friendly staff! Food was delicious! We had Fish n Chips and Hilo Local Plate. Since it’s an open air space, I was a little worried about flies, there were none. Highly recommend.

We stopped here for dinner while we were in Hilo after visiting the waterfalls. Almost everyone in my party ordered the coconut crusted fish and we were all very happy with our choice. It was so delicious! For dessert we tried a Hawaiian favorite dessert, Haupia Dream. It was fine but nothing amazing. The service was good, the ambiance was great, and I loved the special tropical touches like the tiki style glasses. We didn't get one of their pineapple drinks but those looked great! If we are back in Hilo I would definitely go back.

I ordered the nachos with pork and my husband ordered the fish and chips. Both were just ok. The fish and chips were better than the nachos. The toppings were just thrown other the nachos in clumps. The cheese wasn't fully melted. There was a minimal amount of pork on them. Out food came out so fast, it was like they already knew what we wanted before we ordered. The drinks came like 4 minutes after our food, which was not preferable. I had the piña colada, which was very good. My husband had the monitor. I'd go back for drinks, but not food. The server were very nice, so no complaints there.

Stopped in for Valentine’s Day dinner. Even for a holiday, the wait was only about 15 minutes for a table. The service was impressively fast, and the food was decent. Solid open-air spot in Hilo if you want a reliable meal without a massive wait

Food 5/5 - Ordered calamari, fish & chips, and grilled fresh catch. Calamari was delicious, as the panko batter was flaky, and the calamari strips were tender without any chewiness. Fish & chips, the batter was good (not very oily) and the marlin fish was not dry. Steak fries and salad were fine. The grilled fresh catch was also good, although the slice of ahi did look a little small. Pina colada and pineapple no pow were refreshing. Service 4/5 - Service is good, servers checked in to see how our food was, and did make a round to refill our drinks. Ambiance 4/5 - Interior is good with a pineapple colored theme and open atmosphere. Overall - I had a pleasant experience and will visit again.

I had the grilled fresh catch (Ahi tuna) and the taste was mild and quite delicious. The restaurant knows quite well how to prepare fresh fish, but you should avoid pasta. A bit on the pricey side but worth it just once for the high quality fish, if you are touring the island. Lengthy wait on New Year’s Day 6 PM made us come back for lunch at 2 PM the next day.

Bright and friendly atmosphere. We were seated quickly at the bar on a Sunday afternoon in late November 2025. Our bartender/server Makoa was phenomenal. Very attentive and kind. You can’t go wrong with any of their happy hour options. All delicious. For our entrees, my fiancée had the poke tower, which she really enjoyed. I had the fresh catch, panko breaded style, which happened to be ahi tuna, and steak fries. Bar none, some of the best fish, and possibly one of the best meals, I’ve ever eaten! Stop by his restaurant. It’s a great spot!
