About
A Hidden Oasis for Plant-Based Fuel
Tucked away in the lush heart of Hilo, this spot serves as a sanctuary for those craving clean, vibrant food while exploring the Big Island. The air inside smells faintly of ginger and fresh sprouts, a welcome change from the typical heavy fare found near the coastal tourist hubs. It is the kind of place where locals linger over chilled bowls, watching the afternoon rain tap against the windowpane.
What’s on the Menu
The kitchen focuses on raw and cooked vegan staples that highlight Hawaiian-grown ingredients. You will find signature hearty salads packed with locally sourced kale, avocado, and house-made dressings that manage to be both bright and savory. Their menu is built for those seeking a quick, nutrient-dense lunch before heading out to see the nearby waterfalls. Don't overlook their rotating selection of chilled desserts; the coconut-based treats are particularly popular for combating the Hilo humidity.
The Experience
The space is modest and utilitarian, putting the food center stage. Expect a quiet, communal atmosphere where you can easily find a seat even during the lunch rush. While parking in downtown Hilo can be a bit of a puzzle on busier afternoons, the walk from the nearby waterfront parking is worth it. It is an ideal spot for solo travelers, health-conscious locals, or anyone simply looking to refuel with honest, plant-powered ingredients without the fuss of white-tablecloth dining.

Everything was amazing - huge portion size for the vegan plate. we had the golden curry, the Singapore noodles and the "fish" - everything was delicious and hot, we were served immediately by the really sweet owner. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great meal in hilo, vegan or not!

This place is THE BOMB!!! The food is outstandingly tasty, the couple running the shop provide excellent service, and all for an incredibly low price. I came here twice on my trip, ordering the porkless pork banh mi and the vegan plate, both of which were phenomenal. The banh mi especially took me back to a recent trip to Vietnam, and I wish I had tried the tofu banh mi as the owner says it’s her favorite. A hidden gem for vegans and non vegans alike!

It is always the ‘how in the wall’ kind of places that dish out the best food just when you need it. Driving down from Mauna Kea to Akaka Falls we stopped by for lunch. Got the Phở and loaded it with housemade Chili paste and Sriracha and it was a feast. Warm and welcoming hosts and staff. Clean place. No fancy stuff, just good food with a limited yet solid menu. Highly recommend this to vegan/vegetarian lovers

1st stop I made after arriving on the Big Island. I got a Bahn Mi and the mixed plate. Every single bite was delicious! This is a must stop if you visit. And if you’re a resident, make it a point to come here every week. We plan on going at least 2 more times during our week stay 🥰.

The Vegan Shop absolutely blew us away. The food was so flavorful, fresh, and clearly made with care. My husband and I enjoyed every single dish we tried, and even our baby approved — which says everything. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients in every bite. Their vegan fish sauce was especially yummy and added such a perfect touch to the meal. The service was friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. I can’t believe we never found the time to come here sooner, but we will definitely be back. Highly recommend The Vegan Shop to anyone looking for delicious, fresh vegan food.

Amazing selection of dishes. $5 per dish and they give you a lot. We tried the mei fun, pork belly, sweet and spicy tofu (delightfully crispy), braised fish, coconut milk curry vegetables, fried rice, steamed bun, and tapioca pudding (has fruit in it). Everything was oh so delicious and fresh. Friendly staff, place was very clean, everything was 100% vegan. The food here beats the fancier Thai and Chinese restaurants in town.

As a mostly plant based eater married to a vegan, I was curious about the hype - this appears to be the highest rated eatery in Hilo. Well now we know it’s well worth the rating! Huge portions, amazing service and tasty vegan meat dupes with authentic flavours. Wish our stay was longer so we could come again! (We may just drive from Kona to eat here again, honestly 😊).

The owner was so nice. The food was flavorful. I loved the hint of lemongrass in the fried rice. I love tofu and was impressed with the way they transform the texture in inventive ways. I will definitely be back!

This place is such a gem! The most delicious food I’ve had on Big Island, and insanely affordable. Highly recommended for everyone and a must-visit when in Hilo. The vegan pho is to die for, and the best pho broth I’ve ever had. Everything was amazing, we revisited several times. :) The staff are super friendly too.

This was an absolutely perfect lunch experience from start to finish. There was plenty of parking outside, ordering was easy, lots of seating available, the food was made and ready in just a few minutes, and the staff were super friendly. I ordered the Pumpkin Curry, which was literally the best curry I've ever had. It was warm, full of flavor, with perfectly cooked potatoes/tofu/chickpeas, and something I could eat every single day. The Spring Rolls and their homemade Sriracha sauce were incredible too. The best part being all the food is vegan! If you're ever in Hilo, this is a must try.
