About
A Fresh Bowl of Comfort in Hilo
Stepping into Van Vietnamese Cuisine offers a quiet escape from the tropical humidity of Hilo. The space carries the faint, comforting aroma of star anise and charred ginger, signaling the long simmer times required for a proper stock. It is the kind of hole-in-the-wall spot that prioritizes function over form, where the clatter of ceramic bowls against wooden tables provides the primary soundtrack.
The Pho Experience
The menu centers on traditional Vietnamese recipes that feel right at home on the Big Island. Their signature pho arrives with a broth that strikes a balance between clarity and depth. You will find the traditional accompaniments—crisp bean sprouts, vibrant Thai basil, and sharp jalapeño—served on the side, allowing you to calibrate the heat and crunch to your preference. Beyond the soup, the spring rolls are tightly wrapped and served with a peanut dipping sauce that carries just the right amount of sweetness.
Local Nuances and Practical Tips
This establishment captures the casual spirit of Hilo dining, making it an excellent choice for a quick lunch or a low-key dinner after exploring the nearby waterfalls or botanical gardens. Keep in mind that the interior is cozy; during peak hours, you might find yourself sharing the hum of conversation with fellow diners at nearby tables. Parking can be a bit of a localized challenge given the downtown layout, so it pays to arrive with a bit of patience. It is an unpretentious, straightforward destination for anyone seeking high-quality Southeast Asian flavors in East Hawaii.

Awesome! Couldn't have been happier with the spring rolls and house banh mi we got for take out. The crust on the sandwich was so crispy, flaky, and light...ratio of fillings perfect...delicious spring rolls and peanut dipping sauce...super

Super fast service. I like the tomato based beef Satay as an option to Pho 🍜, large enoughto share. Also spring rolls fresh.

I ate here at least once a week when I lived in Hilo. The chicken pho is some of the best I've ever had (including my travels to Vietnam). Also, the sate noodle soup is insanely flavorful. Could use more ambience. But the delicious food and friendly staff more than make up for any shortcomings in the decor department.

This is my family’s favorite Vietnamese food restaurant. The food here is of good quality and very tasty, portions are just right. Orders usually come out fairly quick. Prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly. The dining area is always clean. A few of our favorite dishes are chicken banh mi, grilled beef vermicelli, pho eye-round meatball, pho eye-round and the summer rolls.

Great Vietnamese food!! We love the food so much that we eat here twice in a row. The grilled pork rice platter and Vermicelli, spring roll and banh mi are all delicious. Highly recommended.

Delicious and reasonably priced. We ordered the Beef sate egg noodle soup, beef vermicelli, and pho combination. We all thought it was tasty. Their homemade chili oil is out of this world. Great service and bright clean ambiance.

So first off I have to say thank you to the owner of the restaurant. My siblings and I were cruising through Hilo and stopped at Starbucks to get some coffee when we saw the open sign at Vans. Mind you this was at 8:55P and they close at 9:00P. I called and asked if we could order some spring rolls. He happily agreed, so we hurried over. So thank you to him for taking a very last minute order. Okay so the spring rolls were made to order and were super good. Decent size and the sauce was super flavorful. Glancing over the menu I saw my favorite Bah Mi and some other sides. I will definitely be coming back here to taste everything. Prices are very affordable. So I suggest definitely trying it out. Open everyday (except Tuesday) from 9:00A to 9:00P Going either tomorrow or Sunday to get a Bah Mi!
