Sip Into History at The Temple Bar

Tucked away in the heart of downtown Hilo, The Temple Bar serves as a sophisticated counterpoint to the island’s more casual beachside watering holes. Stepping inside feels like slipping into a hidden speakeasy, where the warm glow of amber lighting bounces off polished wood and the steady hum of a vinyl record player sets a deliberate, unhurried pace.

A Curated Pour in Hilo Town

This isn't your standard tropical rum punch destination. The focus here shifts toward a precise, craft-forward cocktail menu. Bartenders treat spirits with the kind of reverence usually reserved for fine art, balancing house-made infusions with premium labels. The signature cocktails are complex—expect drinks that play with smoke, botanicals, and local citrus, presented in glassware that feels weighty and purposeful in the hand.

It is an ideal hideout for those looking to escape the damp Hilo afternoon or wind down after a day exploring the nearby Volcanoes National Park. The acoustics are designed for conversation rather than shouting, making it one of the few places in East Hawaii where you can actually hear your companion speak without leaning in.

The Local Temperament

The space is intentionally intimate, which means on busy nights, elbow room becomes a premium commodity. If you head there on a weekend, prepare to wait a few minutes for a stool—the trade-off is the personalized attention you receive once you are finally seated. It is a spot built for locals who appreciate the ritual of a well-made drink and visitors looking for a more refined side of the Big Island nightlife. Keep in mind that the entrance can be tricky to spot for the uninitiated, blending perfectly into the historic architecture of the district.

We’ve been walking by this restaurant for years, it always looked interesting. We decided to give it a try today for lunch. We heard the Caesar salad salad was phenomenal. So we ordered a Caesar salad with chicken, a BLT salad and three street tacos. Caesar salad: at first appearance, it looked fresh with great ingredients. The chicken that was added was dry extremely salty and very smoky honestly, probably the best part of the salad. The Caesar dressing was flat no detectable flavors. This definitely fell flat for us. BLT salad: oddly the dressing tasted very similar to the Caesar dressing… bland. The bacon in the salad was dry and hard and very difficult to chew the lettuce was green and crunchy. Nothing to write home about. Carnitas street tacos: again it looked great when it was served, but was not as good as expected. The pork was slightly dry. Had OK flavor. The tortilla was very chewy. The salsa was nothing exceptional. Service: minimal at best, but we still tipped her 15%. Summary: I don’t think we’ll be coming back anytime soon. I hope their food and service improve. I would suggest going next-door to Jackie Reyes for a better overall experience.

The food is great. The staff is great. It seems to be a great team and team effort. Brittany and Juliette were on top of their stuff! The barback Ryan stood out, he was excellent! He went above and beyond answering questions, giving good recommendations (roasted pumpkin 10/10), and keeping the place spotless at the same time.

This review is way past due. We visited Hilo a while back and found this little gem for cocktails and appetizers which is open late. Brittany helped us have a great experience. Thank you very much 😊

The ice cream and sorbets are fabulous with creative flavors - the miso chocolate chip was our favorite and I loved the lilikoi too. The fried ulu and cassava were so flavorful that we kept trying to guess what they did to make them so delicious, accompanied by the best chimichurri I’ve ever had. My backyard pumpkin salad was well balanced and the add-on smoked chicken was unexpectedly outstanding. The fried rice was the true sleeper star - another flavor bomb - I would definitely go back for more. We had delicious cocktails as well, but the food and frozen desserts were truly unforgettable! We actually went back a second time to have an ice cream flight after a really disappointing dinner next door and it helped make up for most of my regrets over not just going back to Temple in the first place.

Had a wonderful experience here at Temple Bar. We just loved their food and tried almost all types of seafood including their Garlic Prawns with fried Rice, Ahi Carpaccio, Ceviche, Pork Belly poke, Belgian Mussels and Kumamoto Oysters. All these dishes were very well prepared with the rite amount of flavouring esp the oysters, mussels and Ahi. We found the Pork a bit strong for our taste buds. The staff were very attentive and sweet including their young chef. While it's priced a bit high, this place is definitely worth the money.

The food is really good. This was my first oyster and beef carpaccio and they were both really good. We ordered their mushroom and chicken tacos. The smoked flavor in the mushroom was amazing. I ordered pork belly poke. I loved it. The tomatoes and the pork belly with the sauce was amazing. Their fried rice had a nice ginger flavor on the top and a rich broth flavor in the rice. I loved it. Would definitely visit this place again. Now to the drinks, I tried the local beer sampler. It was okay. Not the best. Ordered Creme Brule for desert and I liked it when eating it with star fruit and lilikoi syrup. The presentation of the dishes could be improved. Some of the utensils had some scratches in them and the tacos were served on a paper plate. Still giving a 5 star since the food is really good
