Fresh Flavors from Hawaii Island Soil

Sweet Cane Café brings the heart of Hilo’s agricultural spirit to your plate. Operating as an extension of their own family farm, this local favorite prioritizes organic, locally sourced ingredients that define the authentic taste of the Big Island. When you step inside, you are greeted by the hum of an industrial juicer and the bright, earthy scent of kale and ginger. It is an unpretentious space, perfect for those who want a nutrient-dense lunch without the typical tourist-trap flare.

The Garden on Your Plate

The menu leans heavily into Hilo-grown produce, featuring signature items like their grass-fed beef burgers and vibrant, colorful salads topped with house-made dressings. Don’t miss the fresh sugarcane juice, pressed right on-site—it serves as the namesake of the café and provides a crisp, natural sweetness you won't find in bottled alternatives. The vegan and vegetarian options are not mere afterthoughts; they are the core identity of the kitchen.

What to Expect in Hilo Town

The atmosphere is bustling and casual, characterized by wooden communal tables that invite conversation. Be mindful that the café follows a laid-back island pace, and during the midday rush, the small shop can get quite loud with the sound of whirring blenders. Parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle, so arrive with a bit of patience. Whether you are grabbing a quick wrap after a morning of exploring the nearby tropical gardens or settling in for a hearty bowl of taro-based goodness, Sweet Cane Café remains a cornerstone of sustainable, healthy dining in East Hawaii.

Went here after reading all the good reviews, food was decent at best, the burgers and the sandwiches didn’t have any sauce or spread in them which made it very dry. Atmosphere was good and service was quick but I would not want to go back again.

The yummiest and cleanest vegetarian food in all of Hilo... possibly the whole island of Moku O Keawe. Service is excellent and the staff has great, uplifting energy. I love everything about this place from the beautiful woodwork of their tables to their bright, tropical centerpieces. You will not be disappointed with the food and atmosphere here if you're not a vegan or vegetarian. A smoothie and cookie after your main meal is a must. I believe I got the Farmers salad which comes with 2 different plant-based patties. Their macadamian spread is incredible!

We had the taro burger and spicy pepper sandwich for lunch accompanied by some kombucha. The burger and sandwich were delicious. As a durian lover, I tried the durian kombucha. I wasn't sure what to expect. It had the slight durian smell when you first try it but it slowly went away. I liked it. We also orderd the cassava pizza to go. The flavors were delicious. We came back for pancakes on our last day in Hilo and it didn't disappoint. I was full at the end. If you like kale chips, they make a yummy spicy version with nooch. I look forward to coming back in the future. I wish the Cafe much success. Mahalo!

The place itself is really nice and the menu offers plenty of healthy yet tasty choices. Everything is fully vegetarian and most dishes can also be made vegan, which is a big plus. Unfortunately, we were a bit unlucky with our picks. We ordered the avocado toast, which turned out to be just one slice of bread topped with avocado and some seeds. It felt quite small and underwhelming, especially since most places usually serve two slices. A few sprouts or something extra on top would have made it more interesting. We also tried the açaí bowl. The menu mentioned blueberry and strawberry but instead of being served in pieces or slices like the banana, they were blended into the açaí itself. The result was pretty uneventful and honestly we’ve had better açaí bowls elsewhere on the island.

If you are vegan or not, you have to try their food, especially desserts. so delicious and fresh. If you are on the island, must try their food on or out of your way to volcano national park. Hopefully they will be in business when I return after few years. This cafe would be one of my reasons to visit big island.
