Sum Leung Chinese Kitchen
About
A Slice of Cantonese Tradition in Hilo Town
Tucked away near the bustling heart of Hilo, Sum Leung Chinese Kitchen serves as a no-frills destination for locals craving traditional Cantonese flavors. The space feels stripped back and functional, prioritizing the steam rising from the kitchen over elaborate décor. You’ll hear the rhythmic clatter of metal spatulas against seasoned woks—a sound that signals the fast-paced preparation of lunch specials that draw a loyal crowd of neighborhood workers.
What to Expect on Your Plate
The menu focuses on Cantonese staples that have anchored this kitchen’s reputation on the Big Island. Their roast duck and char siu are the clear standouts, boasting that classic, slightly sweet, and savory glaze that pairs perfectly with a mound of steamed jasmine rice. The skin on the poultry is often rendered to a satisfying crisp, while the meat remains tender. If you are a fan of dim sum, you can find various steamed buns and dumplings that hit the spot during a quick midday break.
Practical Dining Tips for the Big Island
The dining experience here is straightforward and efficient. Be aware that the parking situation in this part of Hilo can be tricky during peak lunch hours, so arrive a little early if you want to avoid circling the block. It’s an ideal spot for those who prefer substance over flair—come prepared to grab a hearty, affordable meal that doesn't compromise on traditional seasoning. Whether you are grabbing takeout to eat by Hilo Bay or settling in for a quick bite, it remains a reliable constant for authentic Chinese soul food in the community.

Always fresh, generous servings great Chinese take out fast food and and some special orders too. A little secret, go here for the best Jai during Chinese New Year. Made by the mom, it's the very best in Hilo. They've been here generations and it's family run, so that's why sometimes there's a line outside .

I got a two choice which the menu says eleven dollars and I got charged fourteen dollars and a pint of roast pork that cost fifteen dollars I received a pint of pork and was charged for a quart. I'm posting everywhere to warn people that how you people are overcharging and ripping people off. A few years ago I found cockroach parts in my wonton min I showed it to the owner and told her to be more careful it was during the time when they were renovating the kitchen. Be cause I enjoy their food I didn't report it and the owner didn't compensate me she just said she was sorry the girl that waited on me yesterday was so rude and I thought thirty dollars is a bit costly for a plate n a pint. I asked for a receipt. How many times have they ripped me off and I didn't notice. It's my favorite Chinese restaurant in Hilo I'm so disappointed. BE CAREFUL PEOPLE SPREAD THE WORD. Sum Leong's overcharges people a couple of dollars here and there add up. I love their food but I'm debating if I should contact the better business bureau and the board of health so disappointed I've been going there for years.
