Dining Over the Hilo Bay Tide

At The Seaside Restaurant, the floorboards have been catching the spray of Hilo Bay for generations. This isn't your typical polished tourist trap; it is a family-run operation that feels like a time capsule of old Hawaii. The main draw here is the onsite fishponds, where mullet and aholehole are raised in brackish water—a traditional Hawaiian aquaculture practice that you can practically reach out and touch from the edge of the dining area.

Fresh from the Pond to Your Plate

Forget the logistics of global shipping. When you order the fresh catch here, it is about as local as it gets, often harvested directly from the restaurant's own ancient ponds. The flavor profile is defined by that distinct, clean taste of wild-caught fish, usually prepared simply to highlight the freshness. You will hear the rhythmic lapping of water against the stone walls while you eat, a calming soundtrack that cuts through the hum of local chatter.

What to Expect

The space is unpretentious and open-air, which means you should be prepared for the occasional Hilo shower to mist the edges of the room—it’s part of the charm. It is a fantastic spot for families who want to see where their food comes from or for travelers looking to escape the resort scene in favor of genuine island history. Parking is tucked into the small lot by the water, and it can get a bit tight when the local crowd gathers for dinner, so arriving just before sunset is a smart move. You get the golden hour light hitting the bay, followed by the deep, quiet darkness of the Hilo coastline.

If you are looking for an incredible dining experience in Hilo, The Seaside is an absolute must-visit. Between the serene atmosphere and the top-tier service, it’s easily one of the best spots in the area. Our server, Kiki, was wonderful—friendly, welcoming, and incredibly accommodating throughout the entire meal. It’s the kind of service that makes you feel right at home. As for the food, the Miso Butterfish is nothing short of amazing. It was prepared perfectly, with that rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture you always hope for. However, the absolute highlight of the entire night was the dessert. The bread pudding is easily the best I’ve ever had. It has the perfect level of sweetness and is the ultimate way to end a meal. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a great meal with a view!

Have eaten at this restaurant a few years ago and they have upped their game. Their food was always tasty and fresh but this time was better and the sou chefs had done an excellent job. Everything from appetizers, roll, salad, entree to dessert was memorably yummy. Big menu, lots of options. Not cheap, but a treat. I do recommend reservations. The restaurant also smells the best, super clean not fishy, for anyplace processing so much seafood everyday. And there's air conditioning!! Also lovely location. Fish, birds and gorgeous views around the restaurant. I recommend

This was a recommendation from a friend. It did not disappoint. Delicious, fresh fish. My wife had some great pasta. Super cool location. I would recommend. (You need reservations.)

My dad was dying for some seafood during our family vacation to Hawaii and we ended up at this restaurant for dinner on our last night. The restaurant itself is casual, yet elevated, but I found the space to be a bit dingy-feeling at night, especially since the string lights in the room we were in were not working. That being said, the food was excellent! My dad said it was his favorite meal of the trip! We ordered lilikoi margaritas, the oysters (and as people from Maryland, we know ALL about good oysters), Manila clams, Chinese style fish, volcano shrimp roll, prime rib, and vegetarian pasta. Very interesting and unique takes on some classic recipes. It’s a shame we were too full for dessert!

After living on the Big Island for 12 years, we finally made it in—and let’s just say we’re already planning our next visit. We arrived a bit early, so we started with drinks at the bar (excellent pours, by the way) before moving to our table, where the service was warm and attentive from start to finish. We began with the escargot, which, honestly, is the best we’ve had on island: buttery, garlicky, and perfectly tender. We also shared a shrimp dynamite roll that was fresh, balanced, and made exactly as it should be—each bite delivering that satisfying crunch and spice without overpowering the delicate shrimp. For our main, we split the 16-ounce cut prime rib, cooked to absolute perfection and served juicy and flavorful, with each bite reminding us why we love a classic done right. It’s rare to find a spot that nails the food, service, price, and overall vibe all in one, but this place delivered. We’re already looking forward to coming back—and next time, we’ll be saving room for dessert.

Seafood is always done right! The host was really nice he told us the daily specials and some recommendations. We ordered the poke nachos and shrimp dynamite roll for starters and the blackened ahi and the New York steak & lobster for dinner. Everything tasted delicious and was cooked to perfection. It did take quite a while for our order to come out and it was a bit loud making it hard to converse. The restaurant is a bit dated but the view of the pond makes up for it.

This popular local restaurant is worth considering for dinner, but ensure they have an available table or make a reservation in advance. Despite high expectations from reviews, our dining experience wasn't particularly special. Waiting over 50 minutes for our sushi roll and a mix-up in cooking the fish extended our wait time to over an hour. The Spicy Ahi Bombs were flavorful, the Seaside Roll was okay but had a specific taste we didn't favor, and the Fresh Catch of the day (Ono with linguine) was well-cooked but lacked a distinctive flair.
