Sakura Sushi & Grill
About
Fresh Pacific Catch in the Heart of Hilo
When you find yourself craving precise, traditional Japanese preparation amidst the lush backdrop of Hilo, Sakura Sushi & Grill offers a straightforward escape. The dining room maintains a functional, modest aesthetic that prioritizes the plates over flashy decor. It is the kind of spot where locals duck in for a quick lunch or a steady, reliable dinner after a long day near the Wailuku River.
The Omakase Spirit on a Plate
The menu highlights the bounty of the Pacific, focusing on expertly sliced sashimi and rolls that lean into island-fresh ingredients. You will notice the kitchen emphasizes clean, sharp knife work, particularly in their hamachi and ahi offerings. Beyond the raw bar, the grill section produces fragrant teriyaki dishes that arrive with the characteristic glaze and a side of crisp, steamed vegetables. The air is often filled with the faint, savory hum of miso soup simmering, creating an inviting, low-key environment.
Practical Dining Notes
Because the restaurant occupies a compact footprint, the atmosphere can get quite lively during peak hours when the neighboring office crowds arrive. It isn't a place for hushed, intimate conversations, but it excels as a hub for those who value authentic flavor profiles without the pretension of high-end fusion concepts. If you happen to visit on a busy weekend, keep in mind that the parking area can be a bit tight, so you might need to circle the block once or twice before settling in for your meal. Whether you are a resident of the Big Island or just passing through the east side, this kitchen remains a consistent stop for those who appreciate the fundamentals of Japanese culinary craft.

Have been a bunch of times, but this time was upsetting. Went for my daughter's bday. She is 11. Lots of other bdays w/ singing etc. Anyway, she was literally wearing a crown that said happy birthday. When asked about dessert we said the bday dessert please plus we'll add icecream. They only brought the ice cream and acted like it wasn't her bday. So, I serectly asked if they do anything for bdays. Server rolled her eyes and later brought out the complementary dessert and candle, no singing. When they brought the ice cream, they gave us 2 spoons for the big bowl to obviously share. We nicely asked for 2 more. There were 4 of us. Eye roll and sign from the server. She looked at me like I had just grown a horn. We were not given any napkins. Finally got some when a server came back 40 mins after dropping off food. The server put the bill in front of my husband, assuming he would pay. I worked as a server for 10 years previously, and this is never a good idea. I was the one paying. The main issue was ignoring a little girl's bday. I played it off for my kid, but I was upset. Oh, and the spicy tuna had shards of bone in it. I know rib meat is used, but no actual bone should be in it. We spent $140 to be treated like an inconvenience. We used to love this place. We will be finding another sushi restaurant and won't be back. P.s the sushi bar had a large corner that was duct tapped together. It was strange. I don't know what happened to this place. Server was friendly and helpful. Food was prepared quickly. We had Bento box B - it had two meats. Good portions at a reasonable price.

I enjoyed it. The sashimi and rice came with a little sakura decoration in it, and they also brought a bowl of ketchup in case I needed it, which I did not.

Great service. I loved the spider man roll and amaebi. There was minor mix up with order when they served me fried oysters I didn’t order, but they looked so good, I told waiter I would take it. They gave me complimentary dessert! I would definitely come back! Awesome place in Hilo.

Food 4/5 - Ordered a sakura boat and unagi don. The sashimi/nigiri in the sakura boat was high quality and fresh, as the texture was soft with no hints of being frozen. The roll was good, nothing to write home about. Unagi don was good, although slices for the unagi were on the thinner side. Miso soup was nice and hot. Service 3/5 - Service is average, they did make a round to refill our drinks. Atmosphere 4/5 - Interior is good with Japanese themed decor. Overall - Had a pleasant experience and would visit again.

Very nice Japanese restaurant. The only reason why I would only give it 4 stars was cause the poke with onions felt like there was more onions than poke. Other than that the food was good, the servers were nice and attentive. Would highly recommend the bentos that they have as they gave you quite a bit for the price you pay. Overall good place to eat!

I got the Samurai Roll and the miso soup -- both were delicious. The salmon and the tuna were genuinely some of the best I've ever had. The service was great and the atmosphere was super vibey. I loved the artwork all over the restaurant.

We went for Mother's Day lunch and it was super busy. The staff was working hard to clear and reset tables. One staff accidentally dropped dishes that slightly splashed on me while we were waiting, no big deal...they apologized and cleaned up.... To our pleasant surprise once we were seated, we were brought complimentary sushi appetizer that was amazing and they comped our beverages. Staff was so friendly and attentive and the food was delicious!!!
