About
A Local Staple in Hilo
For those navigating the lush landscapes of Hilo, Sack 'N Save serves as a pragmatic anchor for daily provisions. This isn't your typical boutique market; it is a straightforward, no-frills grocery experience where local residents stock up on pantry staples and fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is functional and energetic, reflecting the fast-paced nature of daily life on the Big Island.
The Poke Counter Distinction
The standout feature here is the deli section, specifically the poke counter. It is widely recognized by Hilo locals for offering some of the freshest seasoned fish in town. You will often see a line forming near the glass cases, where the scent of shoyu, sesame oil, and sweet onions fills the air. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch before heading toward the Hamakua Coast or stocking a cooler for a beach day, the options are prepared with a consistency that keeps the local crowd coming back.
Navigating Your Visit
Be prepared for a bustling environment. During peak hours, the aisles can get crowded, and the checkout lines move with a frantic efficiency. It is the kind of place where you hear the familiar hum of refrigeration units and the rapid-fire scanning of barcodes. Parking can sometimes be a test of patience, especially on weekends, but the accessibility to local favorites—like Hawaiian sun juices, specific regional produce, and those iconic deli boxes—makes it a necessary stop for anyone looking to eat like a true Hilo resident.

Go here locally almost every other week. Always have problems with my items and long lines. Need more wic stickers to see which items I can actually get rather than searching the whole store for the right items I need. If not follow up with the wic to fix your guys store. Update everything.

In Hilo, there's just a small contingent of grocery stores so if you want the bulk of the customers, it's really not price BUT customer service to make you want to come back and spend your money no matter what! Sack and Save got the "customer service"! I'm not going to go into detail(too long) but for me to type this means a great impression was shown to me! Go check them out and just observe the family hospitality! Aloha!

Paula was on an ego trip and denied a 30 year old alcohol which we then were able to go purchase from another store without issue. Very confusing considering that we would be allowed to go back the next day and buy according to the manager. Crappy experience made worse by a cashiers ridiculous logic.

What an interesting place; walked here to grab some squid for fishing bait, but we got to see way more than anticipated. They kind of have a security guard at the door due to the homelessness in the area. Was able to witness a smoking homeless guy try and get in but quickly dodged to the side to grab two can out of the trash. When we were checking out our squid, same smoking homeless guy had a basket full of stuff and was doing... Stuff.. Anyways, probably not my 1st choice of grocery stores, but they have squid for fishing so yeah

Such great employees at this location the deli and seafood counters have awesome people working there and the employees at the registers are always super friendly which keeps me coming back! I do suggest keeping your valuables hidden from sight due to the homeless issues in the area but just remain aware of wherever you are and whoever is around

Starting to get too expensive compared to stores around there. I like to get poke there. I don't buy their sandwiches anymore because they have gotten so expensive. The clearance carts in the frozen food isle are no bargain. I have caught them trying to sell items higher than their shelf price. Charges 5 cents for bags now. Walmart and Target 1/2 the price. Busy store.

This is owned and operated by Foodland. They got a good location in downtown but homeless people come hang outside the store which is kinda bothersome. Store is pretty clean and has most of the things that you want and need to purchase. Customer service is okay. Not that friendly though. But still will recommend you this store as this open late at night for your late fixed grocery. Happy juandering fellow Juanderers!

Oh boy..Hilos downtown Sack n Save was awesome. It's been a long time since I've been in there and I didn't recognize the place. Much more spacious and convenient. More room to turn the cart around. No foul orders of fish. Shelves fully stocked.all prices easily viewed..and the old wonderful roofed area to park. Loved it. The vegetables so fresh..
