A Hilo Culinary Staple

When you find yourself roaming the streets of Hilo and craving a hearty plate, Reuben’s Mexican Food stands out as a reliable haunt for comfort. This spot captures the unpretentious spirit of Big Island dining, focusing on generous portions that satisfy the hunger brought on by the tropical humidity. The dining room carries a casual, worn-in energy where locals gather for quick lunches and families spill in after weekend beach trips.

Signature Flavors and Menu Highlights

The menu leans heavily into the classics, with many regulars gravitating toward the wet burritos drenched in savory red sauce and their signature taco plates. You will notice the kitchen prioritizes traditional seasoning profiles that contrast sharply with the milder island fare found elsewhere. Whether you are ordering a combination plate loaded with refried beans and Mexican rice or opting for their crispy flautas, the food arrives hot and consistent.

Know Before You Go

Be prepared for a relaxed pace; this is not the place for a rushed business meeting. The space itself is compact, and during the lunch rush, the acoustics can get quite lively, turning the small dining area into a humming hub of conversation. Parking in this part of town can occasionally be a bit of a challenge, so give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate the area. If you are hunting for an authentic Mexican-inspired meal that feels like a home-cooked favor in the heart of East Hawaii, Reuben’s is a grounded choice that values substance over flair.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! The service is so rude and unwelcoming here. Coco cantina is much better alternative. Went in to put our name down for dinner on Cinco de Mayo, and a guy in a grey shirt sat us immediately. After a minute or so, a lady in a pink shirt came up to us, didn’t even greet us, was SO rude, demanding to know if our name was on the list. I was shocked at the cold greeting but explained that we didn’t get a chance to- the guy sat us down right away. She berated us for not having our name on the list, and the guy came and apologized to her, not to us. She shooed us out of the table and stormed off with the list in her hand and didn’t even ask to put our name on it. We walked right out and went to Coco Cantina instead. Friendly service, great communication, and yummy food there. Pro tip: customers may actually want to spend money here if you’re decently nice and make them feel welcomed.

Food was great, fast order to table time. I ordered green sauce instead of red and they gave me red sauce anyway (for enchiladas verdes). They espouse their margaritas and the margarita was bitter. Servers all hanging out at the register chatting. Yelled sit anywhere from about 30 to 40 ft away and I couldn't hear them. I was left waiting to order with no more than ten customers in the restaurant. I was done eating and wanted my check turned around three to four employees at the registers chatting. Windows were extremely dirty, floor under my table seemed greasy like a poorly kept commercial kitchen, lights of various color temperatures installed in the ceiling fans overhead with bulbs missing. Food was good, salsa was good. Cleanliness and laissez faire attitude by staff is worrisome.

Had the steak taco and chili relleno with sides of beans and rice. Was not impressed with my meal. The steak taco meat had a lot of fat with the meat and flavorless. The chili Relleno was rather boring with no flavor. Also somewhat on the small side. The best part of the meal was the two salsas with the small bowl of chips which they charge for. Overall not pleased with my dinner.

Well, there are very few options for Mexican food on the big island but this is definitely on the lower end of what is in my experience true “Tex-Mex” or Mexican food. They don’t have any Aguas Frescas options - only Horchata, which was way too sweet. The beans gave me terrible gas so they are not prepared properly and the chile relleno tasted freeze dried. The nacho cheese with something out of a can that tasted like the can. The service was very kind and timely so that is why I’m giving three stars. Better options on the Kona side if you are jonesing for Mexican food.

Recommended as the best Mexican food eatery in Hilo. At our visit, we were seated immediately. The restaurant was 20% full. Our server asked if we wanted chips and salsa along with taking our drink order. Both were served immediately. Our food order was placed at that time. The chips were fresh and crispy. The red salsa was very good. The green salsa was too hot for us. I ordered a shredded beef burrito (wet). Beef tongue tacos were also ordered. The main course was delivered 5 minutes later. The beef in the burrito was tender but had little flavor on its own. The cheese was good. The green sauce over the burrito did not compliment the burrito. Lettuce in the burrito was wilted because of the heat and should not have been put in the burrito. The rice had an oregano taste, which was unexpected and not appreciated. The refried beans had good taste, but there was no texture. The beef tongue was cooked perfectly but had no developed flavor. Pricing for the meal was fair for the type of food. The restaurant was a little dark.
