Front-Row Seats to Hilo Bay

Dining at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel puts you directly on the edge of the Pacific. As you sit in the open-air dining room, the salt air mingles with the scent of fresh island-caught fish, and you can watch the tide roll into Hilo Bay. It is one of the few spots in the city where the panoramic view of the coastline is the undisputed main course, with the silhouette of Mauna Kea looming in the distance on clear days.

Island Flavors and Local Rituals

The menu focuses on classic Hawaiian-style comfort food, making it a reliable destination for visitors exploring the east side of the Big Island. Guests frequently gather here for the breakfast buffet, which pairs reliable Kona coffee with views of the Coconut Island bridge. For those visiting later in the day, the kitchen leans into local staples, featuring fresh seafood preparations and island-inspired plates that prioritize accessibility and tradition over complex culinary experimentation.

A Relaxed Tropical Pace

The atmosphere here is distinctly unhurried. You will hear the rhythmic clinking of silverware against ceramic plates, punctuated by the occasional breeze whistling through the palms that frame the outdoor deck. It is an ideal setting for travelers who prefer a low-pressure environment where they can spread out a map, plan a trip to Volcanoes National Park, or simply watch the sun shift across the bay. While the space is cavernous and can get quite lively during peak breakfast hours, the expansive windows ensure that everyone keeps their connection to the waterfront. Be aware that the layout is functional and utilitarian, designed more for the steady stream of hotel guests and local families than for intimate, hushed conversations, so expect a hum of communal activity throughout your meal.

It is definitely an outdated 90's hotel given the decor but is in decent shape. The people working there were really nice and helpful. The room itself was clean, spacious and comfortable. It would say that in its prime it was a 4.5 Star …

The Hilo Hawaiian hotel is in a spectacular setting and housed in a beautiful building but staffed by a crew that is not consistently hospitable. We met staff who were wonderful and we met staff who told us things like “you must leave the …

I booked and was nervous from the reviews despite the older hotel it was definitely worth the money vs paying more next door. They were curious, the pool seems a little better than the one next door but you can walk ointo both properties, the other area has a little better tide pools but is deeper. It's Hawaii so I expected bugs but actually there weren't any in the hotel or sheets like I read. Everything was great. I am sure if your not happy they would accommodate you. We only stayed a short time but the food was good and welcome drinks were great and a bonus! Breakfast wasn't included which I thought it might be but there was a voucher for 10 off it was Easter weekend brunch so maybe it's different, call to check.

I love the view from these cute top floor balconies. Also, you cannot beat the location for downtown Hilo. They have a good breakfast and restaurant…good coffee. I come here sometimes just for staycation to work when my husband is working on the house with a big project or something like that..

Just accept that it is dated and could definitely use some repairs or even remodel. However, it is clean and absolutely in a beautiful location... Right under the banyan trees on the water. The staff is friendly and helpful. As a Wyndham diamond member, I felt very appreciated and welcome. Highly recommend this property. Four stars just because it is dated. But we stayed at the Hilton next door last year and we would come back here. The Hilton is overpriced and then they charge you for bunch of extra stuff that Wyndham diamond members don't get charged for like Resort fees and parking.

⭐ Extremely disappointing stay. Would not recommend. Check-in was a disaster. Despite only two guests ahead of me, I waited nearly an hour in line. When it was finally my turn, the process took another 20 minutes for a completely standard check-in — no special requests, no complications. The front desk staff were visibly unfamiliar with basic procedures and seemed undertrained. The real issue, however, was how I was treated. I asked to borrow a phone charger, which every decent hotel keeps at the front desk for guests. The staff told me they had chargers in the office but refused to lend one out, claiming “previous guests never returned them.” Fine — but their tone was openly hostile, as if I had already stolen something. I offered to leave a deposit. They refused, aggressively, and spoke to me as if I were a problem rather than a paying guest. For a Wyndham-branded resort property, this level of service is unacceptable. I’ve stayed at budget motels with more professionalism. To top it off, the hotel provides no basic toiletries — no toothbrush, no toothpaste. I’ve stayed at hotels across multiple countries and this is a first. Slow service, hostile staff, and missing basic amenities. Wyndham should be embarrassed to have its name on this property.

The views front the room are great. The service was good. My only issue which is dangerous was when you step down from the curb in front of the hotel you have to be careful. It looks like there isn't a step because the curb and right under …

I am a very tolerant guest. If a hotel is simply old or a room has some wear and tear, I usually would not complain. What I cannot accept is a hotel that is not honest with its guests. The biggest issue was the Wi-Fi. It was unusable most of the time. After reading older reviews, I realized this was clearly not a new problem and had been going on for a long time. Yet every time, the hotel blamed Spectrum or the weather, and even told me that I was the only guest complaining about the Wi-Fi. That was simply not true. At first I thought it was just my room, so I asked to change rooms. Only after changing rooms did I realize the problem was across the hotel, not limited to one room. I can tolerate inconvenience. I cannot tolerate being lied to. The second issue was housekeeping. I fully respect the hotel’s every-other-day cleaning policy. I was not asking for anything unreasonable. On the third day of my stay, I politely asked the front desk multiple times to make sure our room would be cleaned. Because I already had little confidence at that point, I even asked them to write down my room number. When we came back around 4 PM, the room had still not been cleaned at all. We followed up again, and the front desk promised they would contact the manager and provide a solution. Of course, nobody ever contacted us. That was the most frustrating part of this stay: not just the problems themselves, but the constant empty promises. This hotel does not seem to take its own commitments seriously, and after reading other reviews, it seems this has been happening for a long time.

Whenever I check in at this hotel, it feels like coming home. The check in hosts make sure I get the kama’aina perks and discounts. The restaurant and lounge servers always have a smile and “welcome”. The rooms are big and clean. The location is paradise. Parking is free. Restaurant and happy hour lounge with daily local live music.

booked this hotel through Expedia based on the “premium suite” photos, but what I received at check-in was a worn-out room that looked nothing like the listing. When I raised the issue, the staff said it was “Expedia’s error” and refused to honor the advertised/confirmed room type or provide a reasonable solution. A hotel shouldn’t shift responsibility to the guest when there’s a partner listing error—guests shouldn’t be the ones paying the price for it. The lack of accountability and customer care was unacceptable. I have screenshots and photos documenting the mismatch. I won’t be returning after this trip and I do not recommend this property to anyone.
