Puka Puka Kitchen
About
A Taste of Hilo Comfort
Tucked away near the Wailoa River State Recreation Area, Puka Puka Kitchen serves as a reliable local hub for those seeking unfussy, satisfying meals in the heart of Hilo. The interior is modest and functional, favoring quick counter service and a community-focused atmosphere over formal dining frills. It is the kind of place where locals grab a quick lunch before heading back to the office or settling in for an afternoon by the bay.
Signature Island Flavors
The kitchen is widely recognized for its mastery of the classic Loco Moco, prepared with a savory, house-made gravy that pairs perfectly with their hand-formed patties. The menu leans heavily into local comfort favorites, featuring generous portions of katsu chicken and tender braised beef that keep regulars coming back. You will smell the faint, savory aroma of simmering brown gravy the moment you step through the door.
Things to Keep in Mind
While the food is consistently excellent, the dining room can get quite bustling during the peak lunch hour. If you visit on a busy afternoon, be prepared to navigate a tight parking situation, as the lot fills up quickly with neighborhood regulars. Puka Puka Kitchen captures the straightforward, no-nonsense spirit of Hilo dining, making it an ideal stop for anyone craving authentic plate lunches without the fanfare of the tourist-heavy districts. Whether you are a resident or just passing through the Big Island, this spot offers a genuine glimpse into the daily culinary habits of the local community.

Tiny shop, big taste, HUGE serving size! I stopped by while on walkabout, ordered chicken katsu... expecting a basic plate lunch. I was SURPRISED. The serving size was huge, with a salad and ?garlic? rice. Saffron? So much food. Either share a plate, expect take home, or ask for a small serving. Service was very aloha friendly. Very little seating, expect to do takeout for a park, hotel, etc, or if you are lucky, a seat. It looked popular with both locals and tourists. Very tasty!
