Hawaiian Style Cafe (681 Manono St Ste #101)
About
A Local Institution for Massive Plates
If you find yourself wandering through Hilo town with a hunger that standard portions simply cannot satisfy, this Manono Street landmark is your destination. Hawaiian Style Cafe has built a reputation on the island for being the place where moderation goes to die. It is loud, it is bustling, and the portions are famously oversized—you will almost certainly be walking out with a takeout box.
The Breakfast Experience
The interior echoes with the sound of clattering plates and the constant hum of locals catching up over coffee. It feels less like a polished tourist spot and more like a community dining hall. When you order the signature fluffy pancakes or the kalua pork omelet, expect a meal that takes up every square inch of the table. The aroma of sweet batter and savory grilled meats hits you the moment you step through the door.
What to Expect
Because this is a neighborhood favorite, be prepared for a bit of a wait, especially on weekend mornings. The parking lot can be a tight squeeze during the rush, so arrive early or be prepared to exercise some patience. The service is fast-paced and efficient, matching the high-energy environment of this Hilo staple. It is the perfect spot for groups of friends or families who want to experience authentic, hearty local island cuisine without any pretense. Whether you are fueling up before a hike or just looking for a heavy start to your day in East Hawaii, the kitchen staff ensures you leave satisfied.

Food was fine with large portions for reasonably low prices. They done have espresso but don't allow outside drinks. The waitlist is poorly managed...calling you up then making you wait five minutes to be seated, and then doesn't have physical menus. The staff is slow to take the order...then the kitchen doesn't manage the table as a single order and thus deliver it to the table one plate at a time. The first person was done eating before then next person's meal arrived.

We came at a good time. There was only a couple in line before us. The people started coming after we had checked in. I ordered the salad with Korean chicken. My husband ordered the locomoco. He wasn’t impressed with his locomoco. We live in Oahu and know what locomoco would taste like. He said the ground beef had no taste, the rice was mushy and the gravy was thin. He was really looking forward to eating it. 😕I tasted it and thought he was right. Maybe whoever cooked it this day wasn’t having a good day. However, I liked my salad with Korean chicken & the house dressing. It also came with small wontons. The chicken was tasty and crispy as well as the wontons. I ate all my salad 😊😋. The server and everyone was nice and friendly 👍🏽.

I had the blueberry pancakes special with the haupia sauce, which was very good. There were 2 giant pancakes. I also had the special coffee drink, which could've had more condensed milk in my opinion. My husband had a poke bowl and thought it was delicious. We were pleased with the service. I like the Yelp check in system, so you can check the waitlist time.

Thought I came hungry enough for the legendary big portions. The battle will resume another trip… Amazing food and huge portions. Nothing too innovative, but comfort food executed to perfection and great value. Mento bento had juicy chicken katsu and plenty of grill flavor on kalbi, poke nachos had the most incredible sweet wasabi aioli, and the noodles were also perfectly chewy with a gently savory and sour broth. Oh, and the burger was sweet on a well toasted bun. Somehow, the meal kept on giving!!

Generous portions. The food I ordered was the lamb ribs, it reminded me a lot of how they make barbecue in Brazil. Delicious. Not many options of sides, but options enough: white or brown rice, salad or Mac salad. I super recommend the salad with their house sauce, based on sesame seed.

Generous portions for the price. 🍱 The menu had plenty of options, and everything we ordered tasted great. Really impressed with the quality and consistency across the board. It’s clear that the kitchen takes its craft seriously, and the staff adds the extra touch of care. Happy that I chose this place!✨

This is a place you can sit back and visit. It's got a homey feel. We had the Kalbi ribs and the Macnut panko Mahi. They were good portions and wonderful tasting food. The portions we large. Took home a piece of their Chantilly cake. Will definitely be back.

My husband had really good food. The other tables around us looked like their food was great too. I unfortunately chose the new special ribeye steak sandwich. The waitress said it's the first day they served it. It tasted like a very greasy frozen Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It was mostly cheese with tiny cut up green peppers. The bun was very soggy with oil and the meat dried out. Again the flavor was like a very greasy freezer Philly cheesesteak. The grease was leaking all over and coating the plate under the french fries. I actually threw up when we checked into the hotel after we ate there. The waitress while initially kind, was busy chatting with the next table, and I regret not getting her attention while we were there. The French fries were good and the garden salad tasted fresh. I really like their house made dressing. Eat there, just don't get the new ribeye steak sandwich special.

Absolutely loved this place. We tried a few other places to eat but this was our favorite. We came back several times and this was our go to. Food is delicious, fun way to try some local dishes, service is good, and we were well taken care of. Highly recommend! Officially my favorite place to eat on the big island!

One of the top places we ate at while visiting the Island on our 10 day trip. We ordered the Korean fried chicken and Ribs plate. We had no idea what to get especially when the waitress says everything is good here. We peered over to our neighbours sitting and a local family were all eating the Korean ribs, thus we did the same! Service was great, food was huge portions. It’s a nice break from the white boiled rice almost every other restaurant gives along their sides. It was enough food for the next day leftovers. Would come back here again if I could to try some of their breakfast and dessert options!
