Pete's Belly Bustazs
About
Big Island Portions That Earn Their Name
If you find yourself navigating the winding roads near the heart of Hilo, you have likely caught the scent of grilled meats drifting through the humid air. Pete's Belly Bustazs is exactly what the name suggests: a sanctuary for those who believe lunch should be a heavy-lifting affair. This isn't a place for small plates or delicate garnishes; it is a straightforward, no-nonsense stop for plate lunch culture in the Big Island's culinary landscape.
The Hilo Style Experience
The atmosphere here is purely casual—think plastic trays, humming ceiling fans, and the constant rhythm of local chatter. You might have to hunt for a parking spot during the lunch rush, as the small lot fills up quickly with work trucks and locals grabbing their mid-day fuel. Inside, the air smells intensely of smokey teriyaki and seasoned starch, a familiar aroma for anyone raised on authentic Hawaii island comfort food.
Menu Highlights and Local Flair
Chef Pete has leaned into the heavy-hitter favorites that define the local palate. The signature portions are designed to keep you satisfied for the rest of the day, featuring generous scoops of creamy mac salad and sticky rice that serve as the foundation for their savory grilled meats. Whether you are ordering a classic mixed plate or trying one of their rotating specials, expect the meat to be charred properly on the edges. The staff moves with a quick, efficient clip, ensuring that even if the line spills out toward the sidewalk, you aren't waiting long to get your hands on a heavy styrofoam container. It is the perfect spot for hungry surfers coming off the water or anyone looking to skip the tourist traps in favor of a genuine Hilo meal.

A little mom & pop store where the people are super-friendly and there's a nice variety of food to choose from: everything from burgers, fries, and sandwiches, to tacos, quesadillas, and chili, to various local and Asian foods (there's also a nice selection of breakfast choices). You'd have to be pretty seriously picky to not find something to like here. They aren't open for dinner, but are a great place for breakfast and lunch. Update: so I moved away from Hilo for four years, moved back, and the first time I showed up again they recognized me through the mask and hat I was wearing. Felt amazing. 😄 It's a little different now physically as you stay outside to order, but the service is still the same level of quality.

I had the cheeseburger deluxe, for me I didn't really care for it. Hamburger was way to soft and the bun they used got very soggy. The hamburger and bun were very tasteless. But they may have other menu items that are better.. oh and my burger was $9.50 which was way to pricey for what I got.

I was very disappointed to find the grain fed hamburger is made by adding bread. It doesn't have the consistency or taste of meat. I am allergic to wheat so after a bite and checking on the contents, I threw it away. The fries were ok.

Got myself the special today, lobster salad with ranch dressing & a red cream soda. Fast service, always with a smile & a thank you. Lobster salad was delicious with fresh greens, tomatoes, shredded carrots & purple cabbage. Gotta try it as a melt the next time it's on the menu.

$$$ Blame it on "Shrinkflation?" I believe the portion size was small for the price. $12 for one Mahi burger with cheap buns, and not a whole lot of fries... didn't have to skimp on the fries... a bit dissapointing. No coleslaw either... 😭 Mahi patties were small and thin. Maybe it was an off day... maybe other items are a better deal? I will try other plates and will see if it changes my opinion.

Great little hole in the wall. A small lunch shop that serves both local and Mexican dishes. Opens for takeout only from breakfast to lunchtime. Very friendly staff. Food is outstanding and stays consistent between each visit. My favorite spot and eat here between 4-6 times per month when in town 😋

This is the best place to get a quick salad in Hilo. I love their daily specials and especially enjoy their mushroom and swiss burger. The fries are super tasty. They are also a small business and the workers are extremely friendly and personable. They also are on DoorDash now!

Delicious local food and friendly staff! Encouraging messages everywhere too♥️! Take-out meals & desserts + party platters. Look for the food pictures on the front door on the side of a small medical plaza that's next to a rehab center. Mohouli park near by has restrooms and a covered eating area if you want a close place to eat a few minutes drive away. This is not too far from Rainbow Falls*

Been coming to Pete's Belly Bustaz for a while now. Love the atmosphere. Its only take out. But they are husband and wife own franchise. Friendly people with a homely attitude. Food are all home made very good. There chicken salad is my favorite its only a special made on a certain day but worth the wait. All in all food is excellent. But never go on lunch time they are slammed with customers.
