Paul's Place
About
A Hilo Morning Ritual
In the heart of Hilo, Paul’s Place stands as a reliable anchor for locals craving a genuine, no-frills breakfast. You will smell the heavy scent of sizzling bacon and fresh-brewed coffee the moment you step through the door. It is the kind of establishment where the walls are covered in colorful, mismatched décor, giving it a lived-in character that feels miles away from the polished resort dining found elsewhere on the Big Island.
What to Expect on Your Plate
The menu leans heavily into island-style comfort food. The portions are substantial, designed to fuel you up for a day exploring nearby tropical waterfalls or the rugged coastline. Locals generally flock here for the signature pancake stacks and savory omelets that arrive steaming hot. While you might find the seating arrangements a bit cozy—expect to hear snippets of conversations from the neighboring tables—that is simply part of the charm.
Why Dine Here
This is not a place for white-tablecloth service; it is a spot for a quick, hearty meal before you head out into the Hilo humidity. The staff operates with a brisk efficiency that keeps the line moving, even during the weekend rush. If you want to experience how the residents of East Hawaii start their day, grab a seat, order the local favorite, and enjoy the communal energy of a true Hilo institution.

Absolute amazing experience. Food was fantastic. Paul was very kind, cheerful and entertaining. The small dining area makes for an amazing experience. Atmosphere is unlike anything we have ever experienced. Absolute hidden gem in Hilo. Will be visiting every chance we get!!!

The chef welcomes you and personally comes to your table to tell you about the food and menu of the day. Then you you see him and his assistant prepare your food in a tiny cooking area behind the counter. A more personal experience you cannot find besides having a personal chef. We showed up without a reservation, got lucky getting a table, and came back in about an hour for a spot at one of only 3 tables in the whole place. And for the quality, presentation, and value of the food you cannot find a better dining experience in Hilo or anywhere else. It was great food.

This is the exact example of what restaurants should be. Inspirational, Paul just found his place in the world by offering us his culinary art through his place. He makes all these delicious and perfectly crafted plates for the right reasons: happiness and freedom and it shows on every detail. This is a must visit in Hilo

Went over for breakfast this morning. Very small place with only 3 tables, so reservations are a must. Paul works the kitchen and dining room and he has one server. He makes you feel like you are in his house, super friendly, explains the menu and chats with you during the meal. The server was also super friendly, and the food was not auctioned off. Limited menu, but the food was excellent. My wife really enjoyed her Belgian Waffles and my Pasta de Marco was superb. It was probably the best breakfast entree I've ever had anywhere, no exaggeration. I've never seen this on a menu before and glad I tried it. The prices are par for the course for the island, and well worth it. Absolutely a must for breakfast when in the area. Great job, Paul!

A small, cozy, and truly atmospheric restaurant where you can feel the personal touch in every detail. The owner is also the chef, and it shows — the food is exceptional, beautifully plated like a work of art, and made with real care. Reservations are required, but it’s absolutely worth it. 🩵🩵🩵 A hidden gem you’ll want to come back to!

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious and enjoyable breakfast at Paul's this morning. Warmly greeted, very cozy ambience (loved the Halloween decor!), attentive service, and wonderful food made it easy to rate this establishment a top score. (BTW, make a reservation. We popped in around 7.30 for breakfast, needed to make an 8.30 reservation, so we walked around the farmers market next door, and then returned for breakfast!)

One of the best foodie finds in Hilo! Seating is extremely limited, so you will definitely want to make reservations in advance. You will also definitely want to order the Pasta de Marco, their signature dish. It’s crispy noodles topped with bits of bacon, egg and veggies - haven’t had anything like it anywhere I’ve traveled!

Paul’s Place was a great little find! Highly recommend making a reservation, although we were lucky to walk in on a random Thursday. We ordered the Belgian waffles, regular coffee, and the bacon Benedict — all were delicious! The chef was extremely friendly and accommodating. With only three tables (each seating two), the space feels quaint and peaceful — perfect for a quiet conversation and enjoying the cozy atmosphere and great food.

What a place. Only 2 tables, so book ahead. Don’t let the outside scare you away, inside tastefully done with great attention to details. This is a hidden gem. Waffles amazing, pasta breakfast was like a frittata with amazing flavors. Coffee was amazing. All on all a must visit. Not the cheapest, but certainly memorable. Open breakfast and lunch
